Cat Ba // Day 7 April 30 . Today is our second day in a row off from work! It feels so nice to enjoy the benefits of our work exchange. We rented a nicer motorbike last night since the hostel is very busy. We had an easy start to the day and waited around to have our free lunch at the hostel before heading off to explore. We wanted to try a new beach, so we found one a little bit farther out - maybe 15 min on motorbike. We were so excited because this one had WAVES! Rae was very excited because she grew up with wavey oceans in Florida, so she rented a boogie board and went after it. We had sooo much fun playing in the water!! We boogie boarded, jumped into the waves, and went in and under them in every way imaginable. After a while, Bex got out to tan on the beach, but it was quickly disrupted with a watergun fight?! Bex was handed a water gun and was thrust into a war with the locals. It was fun to watch for Rae, hahaha. Soon after, they were also throwing powdered paint on the beach, too - Bex got hit a few times. There was free beer being passed out after the chaos. Meanwhile, Rae stayed in the water playing. The entire 2.5 hours we were there. Our friend Scott joined us for a while, too. The tide was really coming in, and the people were multiplying, so we left with Scott to get some food, and then freshen up and relaxed back at the hostel. Around 9 pm we decided to go into town to return our bike and have a drink. We went to a place called The Big Man. We people watched, and Rae had a yummy Vietnamese Session IPA. Afterward, we went to our friends Simone and Zee’s apartment for a little housewarming party. We ended up crashing at their place so that we would be sure to have a safe drive home. It was a late night and will be an early morning because Bex starts their shift at 7am! Cat Ba // Day 6 April 29 . We had our first day off today! We started early and went down to the bar to get our breakfast. Then Bex went for a swim and Rae read for a bit by the pool. We needed to get into town to get a new sim card and go shopping before we went on the evening bioluminescent plankton boat tour. We got a taxi into town from the hostel and straight away sorted out our phones, which was amazing! It felt great to be able to access maps and stuff when we left the phone office, so we headed to a market. We wanted to buy some skimpy clothes because of the heat, but it was so hot looking. We felt too gross to try anything on and went to a cafe instead. It had AC, so we ordered coconuts, and realized everything looked eerily similar to the hostel bar. We found out it's a sister restaurant! Then we headed to get cash and go to the tour office. We weren't sure what to expect, but the tour was amazing. It ran from 4pm to 9pm and started with us jumping off the boat into the sea. While swimming, we met another queer couple and shared our love stories. It was wonderful. Then we went kayaking after the sunset! It was bizarre being on the water in the dark. Then we saw the bioluminescent plankton for the first time and couldn't believe our eyes! It's like fireflies in the sea. We spent an hour just playing with the water and even got out of the kayak to swim. Your whole body glowed as you moved through the water. We felt like Disney princesses! Then we had dinner on the boat and headed back. The waves were really big, and the boat was rocking a lot. It was a bit scary,but we made it back. Then we hired a bike from the nicest woman in the world. She waited up for us and filled our bike! We drove back to the hostel and chilled by the pool with our friend Ori. We had a wonderful conversation and shared stories, then Rae headed to bed while Ori and Bex stayed chatting until 3am. Cat Ba // Day 5 April 28 . This morning was our first joint shift! We worked together on the morning shift from 7am-12pm and it was so fun. We already know we work well together, so our shift had a nice flow to it. It was a bit busy but manageable. We’ve discovered we both quite like the early shift because then we have the whole day to do whatever! We finished at 12 pm - sweaty and dreaming about swimming in the pool 20m away. After a quick lunch we went swimming! We played some games in the pool and met some lovely French people who are actually exchange students in Seoul at the moment! It felt like a little piece of home to talk about familiar places and South Korea. After the pool, we relaxed on the day beds and did some reading, chatting, and drawing. Rae made a banging chocolate/PB/banana smoothie as a snack before dinner, and we just relaxed! We were trying to get on a boat tour tomorrow, but they are all full! BUTTT, the owner of the hostel squeezed us into an evening plankton boat tour! So tomorrow evening, we’re going to see the bioluminescent plankton!! We are very excited. The kitchen staff has been making us delicious vegetarian meals as our staff meal and today we got delivered some amaaazing curry and rice poolside. We ate until we were stufffffffed. Then, we played Rummy with our friends Zee and Scott, followed by a round of pool. We have the next 2 days off, so we decided to go out to a bar tonight! We shared a motorbike and rode into town with our friends Zee and Simone to a popular place called Oasis. We had a beer and tried the infamous balloons. They were a good time, hahaha. After a few hours, we headed back to the hostel and went to bed pretty quickly. Finally sending off this elopement from last week! Whew, these two were all smiles. I had a blast walking around with them and finding places to show off their wedding outfits. The pop of red with their blue hair is everything to me. I am eagerly uploading the high resolutions to the gallery now for delivery. Just wanted to stop by here and remind ya'll I'm opening up my calendar to full time work again! This means I'm open for all types of photography, not just elopements and weddings or boudoir. So keep me in your mind for things, I'm excited to be considered this year!
Cat Ba // Day 4 April 27 . Today, Rae had the morning shift and Bex the midday shift. The hostel was fully booked, so breakfast was a bit busier than usual, but Rae had our new friend Scott's help on the bar, so it was all ok. It's been so lovely to meet the other volunteers like Scott here. They are all so sweet and welcoming. Then, once Rae and Scott finished, Bex started their shift. The middle of the day is usually pretty chill with lots of people out during the day and the kitchen being closed from 2 till 4. It makes for a relaxed shift. So Bex mostly cleaned and danced around, as well as making some drinks. Rae went out on a bike to the nearby national park for the afternoon with a couple of people we met here. She had a wonderful day, though she felt tired. She saw lots of beautiful scenery, did a little hike, and even went into a huge cave! Of course, she took advantage of the echo and sang opera in it, hehehe. Then Rae had a bit of a dramatic turn of events on the way home because her motorbike ran out of gas mid-drive. She managed to flag down some locals to help - and 150,000đ spent, 1 angry old man and quite a bit of panic later, she made it back. Bex was already chilling by the pool, so Rae joined them for a while. Then we ate dinner and hung out some more before Bex retired to bed, and Rae stayed hanging out for a few hours. She ended up singing with some of the guests and other workawayers by the pool. How wonderful! We will make a stopover in the Cote D'azur to enjoy 3 more days of quality time with friends there. After this, we will travel on to Sitges for a few more days of holiday together! In short, the Netherlands is over, we've almost said goodbye to everyone 😢, but just a few more holiday days before we're all the way back home in Málaga!
