⭐️⭐️1/2 Book number 54 of the year: content warnings for murder, death, fraud, mental health conditions, suicide and violence. This is the second book in the new Hercule Poirot series written by Sophie Hannah instead of Agatha Christie. In the book Poirot and his friend Inspector Catchpool are invited to the home of a famous novelist who has just changed her will in favour of her dying secretary, who is promptly found dead. Poirot and Catchpool, as well as two Garda detectives investigate. The book was divided into three parts and the story was a bit slow going, though there were a few interesting twists throughout. Some of the characters were rather unlikeable and the book didn't really give Poirot and Catchpool any additional depth. A few of the misdirections in the plot were a little obvious. 352 members of House of Representatives voted today to ban TikTok. That’s 81% of the House. When was the last time that 81% of politicians agreed on ANYTHING. Do we have clean water in our country? Or safe air to breathe? Are all citizens safe from being killed by police? Do all voters have fair and easy access to voting? Do women have autonomy over their bodies? Are we making our schools better? Are LGBTQIA+ people safe? Have we raised the minimum wage in 15 years? Does everyone (business and entities included) pay their fair share of taxes? For those keeping track at home the median net worth for members of the House and Senate is $1,008,767 according to NPR. Does everyone have access to health care? Have we done ANYTHING to stop mass shootings? How about are our children safe at school from these events? Cannabis is legal in 38 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use 70% of the country wants it to be legal, yet it still remains illegal federally. Do we have the largest population of incarcerated people in the world - with many there filling the pipeline on minor offenses? Are we still buying products that are created with prison labor? Can politicians agree on fixing these things? No… TikTok’s the problem. I hate it here sometimes.
