I bought the model horses from Dollar tree about 2 years ago, and what I planned on doing with him has changed 3 separate times over the course of that time, and I finally decided on this! I tried to make it look like a stain glass window, but seeing as I don't have any translucent paint I ended up with a more colorblocked look, but I love it honestly. The mane and tail are yarn that was brushed out and then rooted in, but I was a fool and didn't seal in the paint before doing it, which lead to the nightmare that was the 6th picture, had some trouble getting it to lay flat afterwards but luckily keeping some seran wrap around it for a couple of days worked like a charm. Been doing some Model horse customization as of late! I have one that I'm really excited to show off that isn't done yet, but in the meantime have this guy! He started off as a resin Unicorn I got at Hobby Lobby for dirt cheap because his horn was broken off, so I Dremeled his busted horn and made a forelock for him that covered the residue, and then painted him how i wanted him! The dapples are my favorite part, I had a lot of fun doing them! You had to know if there's gonna be carousel horses with poles there has to be bases!! The woodshop master, my hubby, Mark of course crafted these lovely poplar bases which I drilled today. Poplar is a great wood for bases as it takes stain wonderfully or can be painted. Just a quick Way Back Wednesday today. Got to thinking about Breyerfest and the Best Customs Contest and this year’s new theme class – Model Glow Up were you take one of Breyer’s models that is well maybe a bit outdated or not the best and make it look better but still recognizable as that model. And I was like man the mold I did this Appaloosa on way back in 1982 would be prefect for that, Smoky the Cow Horse, sculpted by Chris Hess. This one had his mane and tail removed, a roached mane, done with hair, not sculpted, hair tail, I cut open his mouth but did not really open the jaw, just cut out the molded open mouth to make it look more open and finally I straightened his profile out. Painted in oils for the body color and acrylics for the blanket and possibly the spots. Only one old photo of him dated June 1982. Come on you guys didn't think I'd miss national unicorn day, did you? Pictured front to back, Astral who was started to show Breyer what I meant by a Battle'corn for my first video workshop in 2020. She's gone though a ton of changes since that and is nearing paint and completion! Next, the golden boy Gherin, he was done as the actual sample for the 2020 video workshop and was also shown in the longer 2021 video workshop and will very, very soon be offered for sale as his previous sale fall though. I'm sure you're all bored of seeing Gwenivere but you're stuck with her for quick a bit longer lol Today I finished her body armor by doing her offside barrel. Probably loss about a 1/4 to 1/2 of it once I get her saddle on. That'll be next to last. Next is the brading for her neck armor, then drill a hole for her horn, then it's bridle and face armor and the neck armor. Toss up if her tail or her horn will be last. If you've been wondering or going Laura you keep calling her a Battle'corn but she's got no horn, I add them as close to the end of scuplting and sanding as I can. Why? Here’s some awful iPhone pictures of some of the smaller members of the herd… which has just pointed out the bits of fluff or lint stuck to them that I didn’t clean off. First up is SM Darley customised by Linda Elkjer. When I saw this guy go up for sale I knew I had to get him as he was a mini-me of Aliot. They look good together on the shelf. Second is a custom G2 Thoroughbred by @lynkhart that was a gift from @littlexowlxstudio for my birthday. I named her Camden Cowgirl as she was given to me while our little friendship group holidayed in London for the weekend and we went to visits Camden Market. The Cowgirl part of her name is because we play Red Dead Redemption together. It seemed kind of apt. Third is the dragon horse from MPV that I can’t remember what he’s called. If I'd really been thinking instead of starting Pumpkin to stick bits of extra apoxy on I'd have gotten Princess Pickalilly tail started. But hey at least last night while waiting for a phone call I finially did the base for her tail. Needs a bit of glue and a little fleshing out with aluminum then it'll be apoxy time! Test fit on Astral's tail. I see an area I want to dremel off and it's too flat so I'll have to add some more body to the hair. I also realized I forgot to give her a forelock. Once I finish sanding I'll do that. A few weeks ago while I was working on @khrysalis_studios handsome Stein aka Fireheart he was a bit rambunctious and knocked my container of talcum powder off my desk. Yikes what a mess. He's a big boy so not totally his fault he had no place to put those big hooves. So yesterday when Anna @runt_of_the_batch was doing some cleaning she found our stash of small useful boxes. I ordered a tube of Gamblin Fastmatte Titanium White and it came the other day. If you happen to be ancient and had a mom who thought ceramics among other things you might have these clay tools laying around. If so they make great sanding tool. Yeah, yeah I know sanding sticks exist but those cost money. I've got these and I have the bits of sanding paper from in-between the circles I cut out and while they work. Ah sanding. Seems to be one of the things most model horse hobbyist don't like. I don't mind it. Sometimes it's great to just like your mind float, sometimes not. I always like it to look over what I'm working on to see what might need a little tweaking, or filling or what not. Here's some things I find to help. First up my "electric" sander. Actually a meant for buffing feet I just use double stick tape (made for sticking rugs down) and using a circle template I draw circles and cut out with my scissors. Then it's peel and stick and I'm ready to roll. It’s Way Back Wednesday time folks and let’s have some fun tonight, I am not gonna tell you what mold this was. I think it is a super easy guess but I want to see if I am right and you guys are just too on your game for me. And no I am not doing this because I do not know what it is. I do. As to details, an early one today, thank goodness for dated photo backs – no Laura has no clue when tonight! June of 1982 is the date which would put him late ‘81 or early ‘82. He is done in oils, I had changed over to them by that point, I think my Mom started letting me use her old oils late ‘70’s. Got to love the boulders for footing. Super early open mouth too, with a mohair mane and tail. And yeah no clue if this one has survived the ravages of time, I doubt it. Hmm, maybe someday I shall revisit this model and do a fresh version. Welcome to another installment of Way Back Wednesday or as I like to call it, Laura shows off another old custom she can not remember anything about other then it was painted in oils and done before 1994 lol This weeks guest is brought to you by the envelope of photos I thought I had lost but was just buried in my office and found them while deep cleaning it. We are doing a “Freedom” aka Classic Scale model this week, but still sticking to the theme of grey. One of the Maureen Love Thoroughbreds that Breyer “leased” the models for, the Swaps. Love, these Loves. Simple custom with head straighten and tucked, a new mane and new banged tail that hangs free. Painted in oils to a light dapple grey, as with all my models featured, no clue if he still exists. I did a whole batch of “Freedom” aka classics for it looks like maybe a sales list as all the photos show the same lighting and background. Thinking in late ‘92 or ‘93 as I was doing an article for JAH which also featured a Love Thoroughbred. Anyhow, if you know this boy, or even better own him, please be sure to let me know. One of the fun things about doing these has been finding a few of my pieces still exists and are in showers and collectors' hands. Finally making some time to post this guy! (Not that i actually have the time, but im making some time) he was finished maybe 2 weeks ago, i just have to sign the back, and maybe spray a super light coat of sealer on the back. Make sure you scroll the whole way ➡️➡️ to see the cool back surprise! This medallion definitely looks best from about 5 feet away lol, but as only the 7th piece I've completed, and certainly the first time I've ever attempted a pattern like this, i can be happy with him! I have to just keep finishing pieces and learning as i go, as i can tend to get stuck and never finish things so they never have to be either "perfect" or "bad". I'm pretty happy with his eye, his nose, and a few patches of his roany sabino pattern. And of course his base black color! I also figured out a new technique to add sunbleached highlighting to the mane that I'm really excited about! I have another black pinto piece most of the way done, and a good start on a handful of other projects, including tack pieces! Yesterday and today I had two little bits of apoxy left, still fairly fresh so grabbed Gwenivere from the shelf and I'm slowly picking away at her offside armor. Picked up the Citadel Liquid Green Stuff late last year and have started using it. Long time user how do you normally apply it? How long between coats if you need a little thicker coverage? Today has not been the productive day I envisioned but we're gonna do something lol Starters, make a template so Samson's other side matches shape wise. To do that I use painters tape and then carefully trace the shape, peel it off, cut the shape out and flip it over to use on the otherside once I have it covered in some Magic Sculpt. JA very short Way Back Wednesday today. Partly because I do not have much info and partly because I had the dentist this afternoon and well, my mouth hurts. This is a Breyer Gem Twist that I tweaked a bit. He was made to into a more correct canter, using Plexiglas pegs and then a little re-muscling and a new mane and tail. He was probably done in the late ‘80’s to super early ‘90’s and is painted in oils. I found out he's still in existence and is still with his orginal owner.
