This is because it faces serious competition from other places, such as Palácio da Pena or Quinta da Regaleira, and it’s also a little further away from the more popular attractions in the Sintra Hills. 👉🏻 However, if you have more than one day in Sintra, then I highly recommend adding Palácio de Monserrate to your itinerary. The place is gorgeous, and you’ll surely find that some of the most Instagrammable photos you’re used to seeing of Sintra are actually taken here. I am so happy that I travelled Portugal in the low season, so we were able to actually enjoy some tourist areas like the Pena National Palace with smaller crowds. I am really not into tourist areas, but we were able to see this charming colorful palace. Depending on the weather the palace tends to usually be frequently hidden under a veil of mists on top of the Sintra Hill, which I felt made it even more special! Just driving to the Palace alone will blow your mind with the surrounding landscape and greenery, but then being able to get to the top of the palace and have the mist lift for you to be able to view Sintra surroundings was pretty neat. The Monserrate Palace was cool to see but my favorite part of this area was the GARDEN! 🪴 This place reminded me so much of the movie the secret garden, featuring a lake, several springs and fountains, grottoes, surrounded by lush greenery with really rare species. Now if anyone knows me, they know I am such a plant nerd so I honestly could have spent a good week roaming the areas of this Botanical garden. The Park of Monserrate has received species from all over the world therefore the layout of plants is organized according to geographical areas. There are naturally grown regional strawberry and holly bushes, cork oaks; araucaria and palm trees, tree ferns from Australia and New Zealand; and agaves and yuccas from Mexico! Even Japan is represented with their camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, bamboos as well. To be able to see species growing dating back to the 19th century and how big and wild they have become was just stunning. I have added a couple phone photo’s taken of me standing with some of these plants to show you how much they have grown. In a poignant study involving 100 elderly individuals who were nearing the end of their lives, they were asked to reflect on their life and their most significant regrets. Many people think that they would regret the things they have done in their life but in this study almost all regrets were centered around the things they didn’t do.
