Monte Palace Hotel in Sete Cidades, Sao Miguel, Azores opened in 1989. The first 5 star luxury hotel in Azores. 12 years to build & it closed 1.5 months after opening. Azores not much known then, it was built to capture a beautiful view, but this made its location even more remote. The frequent rain in Azores meant that the view only visible infrequently & there was nothing ‘to do’ for its intended high rolling clientele. Today its ruins are a big tourist attraction. There is so much beauty to be found in death and decay. This 5-stars hotel was built in the 1980s as the first luxury hotel of the Azores. It was abandoned shortly after its launch and since then has been gradually given in to the forces of nature. The high humidity in the islands speeds up the process of decay and allows fungi, mold and plants to take over swiftly and "redecorate" the space with new shapes and patterns. O dia que entrei num hotel abandonado e fui parar no meio de uma nuvem 🙂 Esse lugar aí já foi um hotel 5 ⭐️ e ainda considerado o melhor hotel do ano de Portugal, mas infelizmente decretou falência e fechou após 18 meses da sua inauguração. Pozlátko, co nevydrželo 👌 Hotel Monte Palace byl slavnostně otevřen v roce 1989. Tento luxusní 5 hvězdičkový hotel se ovšem potýkal s vysokými náklady a nízkou obsazeností. V provozu byl pouhých 19 měsíců, když byl uzavřen. Od té doby chátrá a stal se slavnější než v době “své největší slávy”. 🏫 Já jsem si zde zažila jedno “poprvé”… Poprvé jsem si vyzkoušela #urbex a doufám, že ne naposledy. Procházím kolem nápisů “danger”, z dálky slyším neznámé hlasy dalších průzkumníků, uvnitř kape voda, v některých místech je sotva vidět, jinde dovnitř proniká venkovní mlha. Snažím se procházet potichu a nepozorovaně. Přemýšlím, jak to tu asi vypadalo po otevření, jací hosté sem jezdili, jaké byly jejich příběhy. 🤔 Je to jiný typ dobrodružství a vzrušení. Je to přesně takové to zakázané ovoce, co chutná sakra dobře. Ťau kamarádi ✋🏾🐭 tak poslední várka Azorů než vám sem začnu hrnou další cestu 😱 takže s klukama jsme si ještě vyšlapli na horu Furnas. Pak jsme si zašli na místní specialitou … kuželnatky .. je to taková mušle ale moc dobra 🥢 no a hned další specialita byl 🍍s prejtem 😂 vypadá to nic moc ale bylo to boží a následuje mostní sýr v banánovým listě. No a pak jsme se chtěli ubytovat v Monte Paláce hotelu ale bohužel neměli volný pokoje. Monte Palace was a 5-star hotel on São Miguel island in the Azores.The hotel on top of the mountain closed on November 26th of 1990, only 18 months after the opening. It was actually quite a sad ending. On the same day when the director of Monte Palace received the award for Hotel of the Year in Lisbon, the staff in São Miguel heard that the five-star would close within a week. After closing, a guard and his dogs were on the spot every day for 20 years in order to limit vandalism. But in 2011, the guard was not getting paid anymore and left. And this was the beginning of the end. Locals began to steal everything from the abandoned hotel, even the lift! Now all that is left are the concrete walls, roof, and floor. The hotel is full of graffiti and debris. Tourists used to think that the building was still under construction when it was in fact completely abandoned because you could hear a lot of noise inside. But that was nothing else than people tearing out bathtubs. A year later, the government decided to take off all of the glass in the hotel to avoid harming people, which accelerated the stealing and deteriorating process of the building. #montepalacehotel #azores
