For the final post, I’ll be covering Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg, who has a museum dedicated to him in Krujë. Behind me is a painting of his epic stand against the Ottomans, thwarting off 100k+ troops with only 2000-3000 men. Fun facts about Skanderbeg: 1) The country loves him, naming villages, streets, schools, football teams, & more after him. He’s on the 5000 leke, the highest banknote available, & Tirana’s main square is named for him & features a large statue. 2) Historians consider him amongst the greatest generals, up with Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, & Napoleon Bonaparte. 3) He kept Arbëria (what is now Albania) unconquered by the Ottoman Empire for 25 years, fighting 30+ battles & only losing one because of betrayals from his own people. He became known as the Protector of Christianity as he prevented the Ottomans from reaching the Vatican. 4) Legend has it he killed 3000 men himself in battle. 5) He was taken hostage by the Ottoman Turks as a young boy & served in the Ottoman Empire. His birth name was Gjergi Kastrioti, but Sultan Murat II Gave him the name Skanderbeg (“Lord Alexander the Great”) after he won battles in Asia for the Ottomans. 6) In 1443, at 38 years old, he fled the Ottomans & returned to Krujë with 300 Albanian knights, killing all the Ottoman soldiers in the castle & taking it for his own. Skanderbeg took back all Albanian castles from the Ottomans during his command. 7) Skanderbeg’s famed helmet depicts a goat atop it made of white metal with gold plating. It was inspired by the helms of Pirro of Epir & Alexander the Great. 8) Pope Pius II tried to crown Skanderbeg king of Albania twice, but perished on the way on his second attempt. 9) Skanderbeg’s family today still owns a castle in Naples & 37miles of land gifted to them by the King of Naples. 10) The Ottomans did not conquer Albania until ten years after Skanderbeg died from malaria in 1468 at age 62. Stopped at the VLA while crossing the San Agustin Plains. The Very Large Array has 27 active antenna dishes. Each of these 230 ton antennas can be moved to different locations with the help of a transporter. This allows astronomers to place them in several patterns known as configurations. The antennas can be clustered together within an area no more than 0.6 miles wide (D), or spread across a diameter of 22 miles (A). The setup the day I stopped was the C configuration, which concentrates the discs fairly close to the visitor center.

Foldery reklamowe z wizerunkiem „dzikich” Huaorani mówią wiele na temat komercjalizacji tego doświadczenia. Szukaliśmy możliwości autentycznego spotkania z dziką dżunglą amazońską i jej mieszkańcami. Trasa powstała w naszych głowach wieeeele lat wcześniej. Tam gdzie chcieliśmy dotrzeć, nikt jednak nie chciał nas zabrać, m. in. ze względu na wojny toczone wówczas w tamtych rejonach przez Indian. Eastern Borneo, July – August 1977. There’s been a bit of conversation in the comments recently about rattan working so I thought this would be a good time to show a few pics of that. Rattan is a climbing plant covered in vicious little thorns that grows wild in the forest. It’s harvested by the men, cut into lengths and brought back to the longhouse where the women take over, drying, peeling, slicing thin strips from the outside of the strands (you need a very steady hand for this), dying the strips (the traditional colours - apart from the natural colour of the rattan - were black, red and yellow) and finally weaving them into mats, baskets and the like. As you can see from the photographs, most of this took place on the ground in front of the longhouse. The mats made by these Punan people were famous for their quality and much sought after. They were measured in handspans and when you traded for them you bargained so much tobacco or salt per handspan. There was always great hilarity when I joke insisted that we should use my hands to measure the mats – my hands were about twice the size of those of the Punan ladies. The last picture shows a mat I traded for in this longhouse. It’s almost fifty years old – hence that beautiful golden colour. Back in my happy place: Sierra Leone! If you have followed me for a while you will know that Sierra Leone holds a special place in my heart. I came here for the first time in 2022 and it changed my life. I learned more about myself in Sierra Leone than I had done in a decade of travel. It made me kinder and less judgemental. It was also the catalyst for starting my business running tours. I’m back again with a small group who wanted to immerse themselves in the culture of the country. I’ve become comfortable in this environment, but seeing their faces as we navigate the “happy chaos” reminds me of both how challenging this country is, but also how rewarding it is also! The people are so friendly. As soon as you say “Kushe” (hello) you can guarantee a massive smile and a cheer followed by conversation. Still very much off the beaten path, locals are very welcoming and are proud and happy that we are here to explore their country. But it isn’t without its challenges. Sierra Leone is a developing country. 59.2% of the population live under the poverty line. A new drug called kush is creating zombie-like youths. Blackouts are common. They have recently gone 11 days in complete black out as Turkey turned off the electricity supply over unpaid bills. There is a lot of litter. And crime is a possibility. What’s the biggest problem though? Lack of education! 18% of primary age children are not in school. 45% of secondary aged children are still in primary school. 19% of secondary aged children are not in school. This means that only 36% of children are in age appropriate education! What would your life have looked like if you had never finished primary school? That’s why we are here. 𝐑𝐔𝐌𝐀 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐊 is the only terrestrial park in Kenya's Nyanza Province. Dubbed the "Last Retreat of the Roan Antelope", the park protects the only indigenous population of rare roan antelopes within Kenya. At present, the population is on the verge of extinction with individual populations numbering approximately 40. The park was established in 1966 as Lambwe Valley Game Reserve. It was later renamed “Ruma” after one of Kenya's most powerful wizard, the much feared Gor Mahia who lived around the park (affiliated to Gor Mahia F.C.). Activities in Ruma National Park Some of the activities that can be done in Ruma National Park is Game viewing, Bird watching, sightseeing, camping, team building, mediation, the park is highly recommended as it has a breathtaking view and location. 𝐑𝐔𝐌𝐀 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐊 is the only terrestrial park in Kenya's Nyanza Province. Dubbed the "Last Retreat of the Roan Antelope", the park protects the only indigenous population of rare roan antelopes within Kenya. At present, the population is on the verge of extinction with individual populations numbering approximately 40. The park was established in 1966 as Lambwe Valley Game Reserve. It was later renamed “Ruma” after one of Kenya's most powerful wizard, the much feared Gor Mahia who lived around the park (affiliated to Gor Mahia F.C.). We found the most darling little shop in Krujë’s Old Bazaar, selling rugs, woodwork, traditional outfits, & all sorts of souvenirs. My Mom ended up showing the owner of the store (pictured) my Instagram, & he was so fascinated by it that he ended up letting me wear one of the traditional outfits free of charge for a photo. You’ll notice this one is substantially different than the one I posted from Berat, reflecting regional variations. Since I’m nearly wrapping up this segment, here’s a few more fun facts about Albania: 1) When it comes to gestures, to an American, no means yes & yes means no. In Albania, nodding your head up & down means no, & shaking your head side to side means yes. 2) Albanians can be quite superstitious - some put teddy bears or dolls outside to ward off bad spirits. Another belief is that if you drop & break a glass, it’ll bring bad luck unless you break another one. Also, putting your clothes on backwards accidentally is good luck. 3) There are 750k+ bunkers around the country that Enver Hoxha had built out of paranoia of a war. They were barely used. 4) Mercedes is the choice car in Albania - about 1 in 3 vehicles in Albania are Mercedes-Benz! This started during the c0mmun1st era when citizens were banned from privately owning cars but Enver Hoxha had multiples in secret. His favorite was a Mercedes 600, so after Albania opened up to capitalism, citizens scrambled to get one. 5) There is no McDonald’s in Albania, making it one of the only nations in Europe without one. 6) Albanians have the tradition of Xhiro, which is an evening walk down the main road of their town. It’s a social walk to catch up with neighbors & local farmers will set up shops at the time. 7) 70% of Albania is covered in mountains. 8) One Albanian superstition says that if you keep a scarecrow on a property while being built, it’ll keep the jealousy away from neighbors. 9) Shkoder, one of the oldest cities in Europe, hasn’t a single traffic light. 10) The entire nation is slightly smaller than the US state of Maryland.
