Consider this: when you believe a child is ‘bad/rowdy’, you will automatically begin to treat them as if they’re bad. And when you treat them as if they’re bad, they start to believe they’re bad. And when they believe they’re bad, that’s when it becomes detrimental to them, because they continue to behave as if they’re bad. And this concept translates to ‘good’ labels as well. For example, when you label a child as ‘smart’, they begin to internalize this label. And when they make a mistake, their internal worth which is now based on success and achievement, doesn’t live up. A valid question - and we might have a new approach for you to consider. If they don’t respond after the first time you told them something, YOUR communication is ineffective. Consider that maybe you’re confusing them, or giving them mixed direction, or simply your direction is not being understood. So the next time you repeat yourself, make a connection with them first. Move closer to them so they can hear you clearly. Kneel down to their eye level and hold a gentle eye contact. Lower your voice, and speak more slowly. When we change our tone of voice, it signals to them that they need to pay attention. Then repeat the instruction and give options. If they still don’t listen after this, perhaps there’s something more going on… and you may need to do some investigating. But parents, remember, to keep your communication effective in the future, do not repeat yourself a third time! And you certainly don’t need to yell. Welcome to the world my little Basketball Tiger Tail cake! This cake was equal parts exciting and fun, but new and challenging, with an overarching sense of nostalgia. Tiger Tail floods me with memories of my Zia’s chest freezer and the multiple tubs of TT ice cream that she used to store in there. All this being said, the notion that we should be “hard on our kids to prepare them for a harder world” is fundamentally incorrect. And here’s why. At the core, parenting is all about creating a secure bond between you and your child. And the way this shows up is through consistent, unconditional love and nurturing them to create a safe space for them to land. So when they do go out in the world, and run into tough situations that will be hard for them, which will happen, they will have a safe place to land. #topictalk: A world in which our kids listen… exists We’re almost at the end of March break, and we’re willing to bet that many of you parents out there are thinking by now “My kids don’t listen to me!” So how do you get your kids to listen to you, effectively? We know kids generally don’t listen. That’s just how they’re wired to be. But there is a way to get them to listen more and more often! And there are two main ways to get them to do this by giving them the things they crave the most: connection and control. We know control is a bit of a shocker and might sound counterintuitive. You might be thinking “I can’t let my kid run the show!” And yes, that’s 100 percent true, and also not the type of control we’re talking about. Let’s take a step back. When we, as adults and parents, reflect on our own lives, we can all agree we want to feel like we have agency over what happens in our daily lives. Little people, kids and teeneragers are no different in that way. So let’s find situations that are appropriate for their age level, where they can decide in order to instill a sense of agency within their own days. So for a toddler or child this might look like “do you want the yellow or the red cup?” And for a teenager, this might be in the form of giving them control over when they do their homework - before or after dinner?” Basically, for the most part, we need to build up their level of agency by starting them off with inconsequential stuff. #topictalk: Bedtime Routines– Are you finding your evening bedtime routine with your toddler is getting longer and longer, more drawn out, and quite honestly, more exhausting? We get it - we’ve been there and done the toddler bedtime routine dance as well. And it can be exhausting sometimes. But here are some tips we wish we knew back then to help keep this ritual in check, and on schedule. Set the expectation earlier in the day, or even the night before, that only so many books will be read. This could look like “ I know you’re excited to read more books. We can read these two tomorrow night” and then remind them the next day throughout the day that said two books will be on docket for bedtime reading. Keep the lights in the house dim for at least an hour before your kids are heading to bed. Today’s houses are full of LED lights (including those pot lights), which can overstimulate their brains, thus making it harder for them to settle down. Consider offering mango for dessert at dinner. Mango is known to have calming effects on the body’s nervous system and can stimulate natural melatonin production. And finally, if your child has separation anxiety at bed time, give him or her one of mom (or dad’s) worn tshirt to cuddle up to in bed. The natural scent of the worn tshirt will feel like home and comfort to them, thus helping them relax and settle into a long night’s sleep. Maybe their body’s are not tired enough - consider enrolling them in a new class, or bringing them for drop in play. These winter months kids are indoors more, and simply don’t expel as much energy as they do during the summer months. #topictalk: Recovery Foods–This winter season you’ve probably experienced a child that is congested and coughing. If you haven’t dealt with this yet, consider yourself LUCKY!!! But if you’re like the majority of parents out there, and do find yourself with a child coughing and struggling with mucus in their lungs, there are foods that will support their recovery. Popular foods that could help them recover faster include berries, pineapples, apples and limes. So far, easy peasy - who doesn’t like these fruits? But unpopular foods that also pack a generous healing punch are broccoli, pumpkin seeds, cucumbers and ginger. So parents, get creative and see if you can sneak some broccoli, ginger and pumpkin seeds into their diet as well - especially when they’re sick, and even as a preventative measure. Here’s one sneaky recipe from us: Ginger Pineapple Honey Popsicles Using a juicer or high-power blender, juice one ginger root, and ½ a pineapple. Mix together ginger and pineapple juices and add a generous amount of honey to sweeten it (2-3 tablespoons). Add in a few tablespoons of your yogurt of choice, mix, and pour into your favourite popsicle shaper and stick them in the freezer. That’s it!
