Kids are much more capable than we give them credit. Here on the farm, we believe chores are an opportunity to grow their character, build strength, cultivate perseverance, and give them skills to carry them through life. With that being said, do chores go twice as slow with little helpers...Yep! Does more feed end up out of the feeders than in... usually! Do eggs get broken regularly...You bet! But would we change anything...Not a chance! Our kids need to be taught at an early age to be hard workers. They need to be encouraged that if they make a mistake, to get up and try it again. They need to be pushed through chores they don't want to do. And they need to be held accountable to complete the task at hand to the best of their ability. And most importantly, they need to see us parents doing the same! This doesn't happen overnight! There have been many times Rob and I have had to be on our kids to push through their chores simply to get them in the habit. Was it helpful to us for them to accomplish their chores?? Arguable, lol. But now, fast forward a few years...and we are seeing some hard work pay off! Our oldest children are actually huge contributors to work on the. So, if you are a parent to young children, hang in there! Your kids may not enjoy the chores you have for them right off the bat (as ours didn't), but they are very capable. Happy Earth Day! April 22 is Earth Day, a day to celebrate our beautiful planet, a celebration that started about 50 years ago in 1970. As a mother of three young children, it’s important to me to teach my children about Earth day and to hopefully instill a passion in them to make our planet a better and cleaner place to live and grow. Although we celebrate Earth Day once a year, we should always remember to take care of our planet every day. Children can be taught to care for the Earth by modelling environmentally friendly behaviours such as reducing energy consumption, recycling and showing children that simple daily choices they make can help our planet. For example, since Mya and Surya were toddlers, they have learned the important of recycling, avoiding littering, and making a conscious effort to conserve energy, such using natural light when possible, and turning off the water while brushing their teeth. I want to educate my children to help keep our planet clean so they can grow up to enjoy the beautiful world we live in. Happy Earth day everyone!
