What a wonderful post from my Colleague TinyTalk Baby & Toddler Signing - Melton Mowbray and South...- Jess 💜 and a great example of how just a few signs learnt with your little ones can make all the difference day to day, even when they are toddlers and can speak 🥰 “I wanted to share something that happened today … when people say signing for toddlers and preschoolers isn’t relevant because they can talk. Today Henry (my son who is 3.5 and talks for England), had his first swimming lesson. I wasn’t allowed in the pool, I had to drop him off poolside then return to reception and watch through the window. As I say, Henry speaks sooo well, which I have always put down to signing with him from a baby. But today he was the other side of the glass, unable to speak to me, and after 15 minutes became very upset that I wasn’t with him. Instead of having no form of communication, I was able to reassure and comfort him through sign. Tell him ‘well done’, ‘fantastic’, ‘good boy’, ‘I love you’, ‘ready and go’. Although he was still a little upset, he understood what I was signing and it gave him some comfort during his first lesson. Signing with our little ones can help them in so many situations. It isn’t wasted just because they can speak 💕 This isn’t the first time we have communicated in this way when we can’t physically speak to one another, and I’m so grateful that he can understand me and sign back! 💥 Violence has been normalized and popular in children’s media for a long time. Aggression is flashy and can be used as a tactic to keep eyes on screen. The best case scenario is to avoid violence altogether, but that’s easier said than done. If your kiddo does see something violent here’s how to handle it: 1. Interrupt the content. If you let the content continue to play without stepping in, it shows your child that you find this content acceptable. Chime in to let them know that you disapprove. For example, “Wow, that person isn’t being kind. This doesn’t sit right with me. Let’s talk about this.” 2. Reflect and validate. Ask your child how the content is making them feel. Talk about how the victim of the violence might be feeling. For example, “How are you feeling about this show? That friend on the show looked really sad. I think that hurt them.” Listen and repeat back their expressed feelings. 3. Reinforce expectations. Describe behaviors you’d prefer for your child to do. Say things like, “We use kind words and are gentle with our bodies when we play with our friends, right?” 4. Give them tools. Remind your child that if something seems too violent for them, they should use their words and tell an adult or ask for a new show. 5. Oversee or redirect. This step will differ depending on the situation. If the violence was severe, you anticipate it will happen again, or you or your child are not comfortable continuing with the content, redirect to different content or a completely new activity. If you feel comfortable with your child continuing to watch the content, remain nearby to continue to monitor and show your child that you care about what they consume. Use this script as a guideline! Adapt it based on your child’s age, maturity level, and individual needs. The key is to create a safe and open space for your child to express their feelings and for you to provide reassurance and guidance.
