Read me - Location - Springbank, Alberta - I won’t forgot this flight.! - After following all the right procedures, the flight lasted a chilling 17 minutes… - 30ft off the ground from taking off, the pilot JF, notices he doesn’t have his usual power. Calm as a cucumber, he straightens the plane horizontal so we can see the rest of the landing strip. He decides on a dime that we don’t have enough runway to take the plane back down. He increases power and pulls us vertical to grab some altitude as we only were at about 100 - 200ft… - We managed to gain and maintain 4000ft of altitude as we called in to tower control to open the runway for an Emergency landing. A chill ran through my spine when I heard that, then adrenaline. - We were coming back around to as quick as possible to straighten yourselves with the landing strip. We both started to feel a wobble in the front end and we knew it was the prop. - Those 10mins where exhilarating!! We started to descended for landing calm as could be. The landing was perfect. - I remember after landing we both took a big breath, looked at each-other, smiled and fist bumped. We just about kissed death and we both knew it - Instant brothers…. That was some serious shit! The foliage from the river was absolutely amazing and the crystal-clear water was unbelievable. Read Me March 2015 - Location – Sihanoukville, Cambodia - Let’s leave the big city and head to the coast, Sihanoukville. It’s a good 5 hour's bus ride from Phnom Penh. Never a dull moment, the converted school bus was packed full of mostly locals and us. After noticing the bus didn’t stop driving much on the trip, I emptied my system of fluids at the first stop. Apparently, not everybody had that same idea…. - A good 3 hours into the scorching and bumpy bus trip, the lady directly behind me, and her two daughters, about 4-6 years old, started making a commotion. I couldn’t understand what was happening, as I didn’t understand the language. A couple of minutes later, I looked behind me and this child is fully squatted in the middle of the aisle over a plastic bag her Mom had placed out for her to use as a toilet. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!! I remember this overbearing smell of sh*t; she was letting it all out! I’m pretty sure I was in shock. - Things went from bad to worse, we managed to hit a bump at precisely the wrong time and there she went right into her excrement. All hell broke loose at this point as tears and screams started rolling. The bus came to a stop, and I was the first one off and spent the next 10 minutes vomiting my guts out! I will never forget the last 60min of that bus trip. - The laidback vibe, our accommodations, and the endless white sand beaches, almost made up for travel in. He was referred to me by a friend that had recently traveled to Phonm Phen, Cambodia and had nothing but good things to say. I’m glad I took his advice. Timbo was great, and we stayed in touch for a few years after. He gave us the whole Cambodian experience, that’s for sure. In his pride and joy, he toured us around to all the best local sites and showed us where we should stay. Believe it or not, my partner and I showed up without a place booked! Oh, the good old days… Everybody seemed to know Timbo, or maybe he just kept bringing tourists to the same places, it made us feel pretty important and safe either way. I absolutely love Belize, and it holds a special place in my heart; you’ll find out why. - I’m spinning time back 7 years, to 2015, my first-ever dive in Belize's crystal clear blue waters. It was amazing. An ocean shelf at about 60km offshore makes water shallow inward, littering the ocean with little keys, islands, mangroves, marine life and crystal blue water. It has holds the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world, and did I mention the infamous blue hole! It’s a tropical paradise. - This will be a little teaser to the dives to come. Read Me February 22, 2020 - - Location Pine Ridge Lodge, Cayo, District, Belize - - I’m starving, it’s getting dark, and I have anther 2 hours to go on this jungle road… Thankfully the road had dried up and was not as slick as this morning coming in. I was in no mood to drive, and was getting a little concerned on where I would spend the night. I had no reservations, and no service…. - - On this desolate road, I past a smaller sign on left saying Pine Ridge Lodge take next left; sounded like a great option. I pulled into be greeted by a gorgeous farm, loads of animals and a very friendly expat; I would say British. - It was very refreshing to have a good old English conversion after the day I just had. I believe he was British, great guy. As he toured me around his farm and introduced me to all his animals, he showed me these beautiful jungle cabanas he had built in the back side of his property facing the river valley. Very luxurious for being so remote, I was looking for the Eco stay, and I sure did find it! Wasn’t the cabana… - It felt like way in the back of the main property, he mentioned there was a tent platform and I could stay there free if I ate at the restaurant in the morning and drank beers. Score I was in! - It was a very interesting night and my first in my new hammock. Let’s say I wasn’t the only one out under the stars. Read Me - Ep 2 - February 22, 2020 Episode 2 - - Location – Caracol Mayan Reserve, Chiquibul National Park, Cayo District, Belize - - There are up and downs to traveling alone. One downside, is you don’t have nobody to tell you this is a bad idea… - - After rain all night, the mission was still to travel to Caracol for the day. As I rented a 4x4 vehicle the day before, it was set to pickup in the morning. This Toyota 4 runner had some better days, it was pushing 300,000km, but my biggest concern was the tires, they were bald. After pointing this out, in true Belizian fashion he assured me that everything is ok because is has 4x4 and the road out there shouldn’t be bad. Yeah Right! - - After white knuckling for 3 hours and hitting the ditch once, only to get pulled out by a local farmer, I finally made it. But not before crossing two military check points. - - Once arrived, it was truly magical. Due to the road conditions I was the only visitor, besides the local workers, this made for an amazing experience. I spent the next 2 hours walking around these amazing historical structures frozen in time. - - Not realizing the time and how long the travel back would be. I ended up overstaying and losing sunlight on the way home. It felt like I was really in the middle of nowhere and didn’t want to be this deep in the jungle at night. This has to be one of the most remote places I’ve found myself. The 50km of jungle road was absolutely nuts! It didn’t help it rained the night prior, but will get to that… - - Caracol, is an archaeological Mayan Reserve that was discovered in 1937 by Rosa Mai. As time went by they kept unearthing more structures. It is said that this site was occupied as early as the 1200 BC.
