You need the bloom to aide in preservation. Use the cleanest eggs you have without washing. Some hens lay eggs that get muddy or messy. Use only the eggs that don't have mud, dirt, and poop stuck to them _ ★You MUST weigh out the pickling lime, the density is different and can not be measured accurately with a measuring spoon★ 👉 ONLY USE NATURAL SPRING WATER or DISTILLED WATER, water which is free of chlorine, fluoride, and high in minerals. If your city adds chlorine to the water, boil the water and allow it to cool completely before using it. 🥚 For Gallon size jars (16-18 eggs): •1 oz. pickling lime • 1 quart bottled spring water or more •Clean unwashed eggs (Eggs that have no poop or mud, and the "bloom" still fully intact) 🥚 For Quart Size Jars (7-8 eggs) •¼-⅓ oz. Pickling Lime •1-1¼ c. water or more •Clean unwashed eggs (Eggs that have no poop or mud, and the "bloom" still fully intact) Directions : 1. On a digital scale, measure the amount of pickling lime needed 2. Add pickling lime to a clean jar. Fill the jar halfway up with spring water 3. Whisk the lime into the water 4. Froze our fresh asparagus today! I love referring to @wholefedhomestead’s book, Freeze Fresh, for tips on the best ways to freeze our homegrown goodies. Crystal recommends steam-blanching, followed by an ice bath before drying & freezing in a bag. We vacuum sealed to preserve freshness as much as possible. Gardening season is in full swing! Spent the entire day outside weeding, transplanting, and taking advantage of the bits of overcast skies to plant in the garden. This IS a full time job. Coot transplanted a ridiculous amount of peppers, I transplanted herbs and took care of critters and then we broke out the pick axe and planted rainbow blend carrots beside the artichoke hearts, more onions and Mammoth sunflowers. . The garden may not look like much right now but it’s four years of tending to soil, figuring out working garden plans and saving seeds. I asked Rony the other day what he likes best about teaching, and he said, “When people’s eyes light up”. There were a few lightbulb moments during our Introduction to Permaculture workshop this weekend. In our old cathedral of a barn we talked about the origins and principles of permaculture. After the rain, we took the teaching outside first with a farm tour, and then we made a herb spiral together. So much fun! I was happily surprised that all the participants were from Grey-Bruce. What a wonderful way to make connections. One thing stood out for me on a personal level: Rony is teaching again. What a wonderful thing that is. He has so much to offer, and there is something really special about having him teach here at the farm. A great first. Ute blømer det fint, vurderer kanskje bambus eller jordskokk rundt septiktanken, så ikkje det er det første ein ser 😅 i grønsaksbedet vurderte me å legge grus oppå papp og svart duk. Men når me hadde rydda i hagen og i sagbruket, får eg nesten litt strandfølelse her no 😅🌞😊👌 også har @handybarane laga nytt inngong/klatrestativ til klematisen min 🥰 inni drivhuset har både kvitløk, druer og kiwibæra våkna til liv. Pierre and the boys have been working so incredibly hard this week to get the new goat/sheep pen set up. Baby Sheep and Sally Mae are less than excited about it! 😂 They much preferred to have the freedom to run around all over the entire property at all times. So, if y’all remember a couple days ago, I showed you that I had re-planted some carrots from seeds that I had grown in an egg crate. Well, the three seeds that you see, growing here, are not those carrots. These are tomatoes that I am re-planting in the same thing that I put the carrots. The carrots seem to have died out. My only guess is that growing seeds in an egg crate, while it seems novel and cool, my guess is that the seeds when they start to grow don’t have enough room to establish a strong root system. So at this point, I don’t recommend growing seeds in an egg crate. Yesterday I was told I look 5 years younger. Today my husband was told that we would always eat because he has a wife that isn’t afraid of work. I take both of those statements as compliments. I’ve always been a hard worker. Never been afraid to get dirty or sweaty. I attribute my youthfulness to hard work outside, getting lots of vitamin D, eating more nutrient dense foods, wearing less makeup, and not working in the local public school system anymore. I work at a charter school now and I’m much happier. In the past 2 years, I have lost at least 20 pounds. Some of it was baby weight. A lot of it was extra weight from eating foods that weren’t nutrient dense. Change comes from within. I made a mindset change. There is a garden show in town tomorrow and I am consider looking for Red Nasturtium's to go in the garden. There are so many benefits to them starting with attracting more pollinators, they help keep away many pesky garden bugs, they are great for poor soils and can be drought resistant. One of the great things about them is that they also have nutrition values to them such as high in Vitamin C and the highest plant in lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid can help with your eye and skin health, LDL reduction and cognitive function. It is a great source of preventative care measures for age related Maculate Degeneration, which runs in my family so why not I say. The seeds can be toxic if ate in high amounts, and the flavour of the plant and flowers are peppery to ranging the flavour of water-crest. Great addition to salads, but they also have healing properties similar to Calendula. All this green fills the heart 🌱 In the end there were only three left (of hens) and honestly that’s fine. We’ve decided to remove all the nets, gates and constraints..just a little house for them and that’s it (even if they love to sleep under the pine trees) We got sick and tired, we decided that we no longer care about following other people and their rules. Closing our animals made us suffer and we knew that sooner or later this would happen. Rabarber oogst. De eerste rabarber is geoogst. We hadden precies genoeg rabarber om een lekkere rabarber-aardbeien jam te maken. We gebruikten het recept uit het @landlevenmagazine rabarber-aardbeien jam. De smaak van de jam is fris en zoet. Dit recept is een blijvertje , zo lekker is de jam. Er staat gelukkig nog meer rabarber in de moestuin om binnenkort te kunnen oogsten. Op ons wensen lijstje staan ook nog rabarber crumble en rabarber siroop om te gaan maken. Day 1 of @womenshomesteadsociety was lovely. @themiller_homestead has done a fabulous job once again in picking a gorgeous venue conducive to fellowship, relaxing and learning! I finally got to meet @heritageacreshomesteadchas in person, and she is more delightful in person than on her Instagram - which is saying a LOT as she is pretty amazing online! @ruthannzimm is sprinkling her sparkle everywhere she goes leaving smiles everywhere with one on one conversations and also her wonderful workshops. @shawnandbeth are here too and I’ve had some great conversations about cows, Christian Service, and Food as Worship with Beth. I also got to meet @theninamullins for the first time and found out she is a fellow Kentuckian! Super excited to meet a neighbor! @christianherbal is here too and it’s been lovely comparing notes with another Christian Herbalist. I have had a fun time laughing with Kody from @homestead_education who is always a bundle of giggles and joy. I learned there’s another magazine I need in the form of @trulycrunchymag - and the founders of that periodical are funny, delightful and I can’t wait to get to know them better. There’s lots of other folks here like @afarmgirlinthemaking , @janellelynnanderson, @saraonthefarm, @toupsandcoorganics and @rebekah.rhodes and it’s so cool to see everyone encouraging one another and getting encouragement. So excited for day two!!!! (And in case you haven’t been watching my stories, we had to pull a lamb off Simone as she didn’t have enough milk supply and bring her with us.
