Miss Nightingale from the opera "l'enfant et les sortileges" written by Maurice Ravel 1925 Throught my research I found that nightingales, much like magpies, mate for life. When one of the pair passes, the other goes into mourning. I had the idea to put the nightingale in a victorian mourning gown, but have the dress be heavily damaged and repaired as she would have been wearing it non stop, much like Miss Havishman from Charles Dickens "Great expectations". My main source of inspiration was a slide show game named "Mrs Crow". Through this i researched the styles of mourning gowns and choose one specific to 1852 as it has a fan pleated front that can be draped to create a nice effect on the chest. I choose this one as the under layer of the bodice would be padded with many layers of wadding to increase the chest and have it more focused on the stomach, creating the pigeon breast effect seen in many Edwardian gowns. The dress is made up of 7 meters of black crinkled taffeta, with antique lace applied to the cuffs, and back peplum frill. The bodice is trimmed in decomposing black velvet ribbon and has been darned and shredded to appear ages and withered. The bird mask is one of my best accomplishments to date as I have never made anything so detailed and realistic as it before. The mouth that is in hinges, allowing the mouth to open and close by opening your own mouth when wearing it really sets this head piece apart from anything I have ever made.
