Week 12, Day 3. Theme: At the Zoo 🦍🐒🐼🐯🦁 Mama didn’t get many pictures today, but Joseph had a busy day! First for art, we made monkeys hanging on the tree with Joseph’s handprints! Next, Joseph made a brown bear (after we read the book). He used a brown bingo dauber to make his bear brown that Mama cut out for him! Lastly for art, he made a paper plate tiger by gluing orange tissue paper and black stripes onto a paper plate. For early literacy, we read “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” then followed with his craft! We also did the “Tiger, Tiger” fingerplay and followed up with his paper plate tiger! For fine motor, we did Joseph’s Safari puzzle truck and talked about all the animals we were putting into it! For gross motor, we did the “At the zoo movement cube.” Each side of the cube has a different movement that animals make. Joseph would get to roll the cube and then we’d do the movement that the cube said! Week 12, Days 1 & 2. Theme: At the Zoo 🦍🐒🐼🐯🦁 Joseph had a Mama school break last week because Mama was trying to get her business off the ground, but we’re back at it, now! We did days 1 & 2 today because Mama had a conference yesterday so Joseph hung out with Nana! For art, Joseph got to make a bunch of different animals! We started with an elephant! Mama cut out an elephant for Joseph and he got to use blue paint, paint brushes, and his fingers to paint his elephant! The whole time he just kept saying “elephant.” Next up we made a Pom Pom painted lion! Mama put Pom’s Pom’s in between clothes pins and Joseph dipped the Pom poms into yellow and orange paint and got to paint his lion. He loved this activity! Lastly, he did zebra marble painting! For movement, we did the movements in “The Animal Pokey” book that Joseph got from ParentChild+ of the North Shore plus! We talked about the animals on each page, too and Joseph practiced saying what they are so we incorporated language as well! For early literacy, we sang the “You Can Hear” song. The age-old debate... There are people on both sides who will die on their hill, but when we break it down scientifically, strength training far outweighs cardio when it comes to fat loss. This isn’t to say you should never do cardio. It is great for improving endurance as well as your lung & heart health, but excessive cardio may hinder you from your fat loss goals. Excessive cardio stresses your body out, raising your cortisol levels & making it much harder to burn fat, especially in your midsection. The best cardio for fat loss is walking. It boosts your metabolism, prevents muscle loss, and helps burn fat much quicker than you think. But the ultimate 👑 of fat loss is STRENGTH TRAINING. Strength training builds muscle and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. So, while your cardio sesh is burning a lot of calories, it only lasts as long as your cardio does. Strength training will keep you burning calories long after your workout is done. Printing letters is not a preschool skill. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This may seem shocking so let’s unpack this further to understand the “why.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦋This post is a collaboration with Laura Petix from @theotbutterfly - a pediatric OT and a fantastic follow for OT support, knowledge, and content.🦋 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How did we get here? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kindergarten standards have shifted over the past decade, with more expected of our children sooner. This leaves a burden on preschoolers to learn skills that they may not be developmentally ready for. Not only are these skills that previous generations l didn’t learn until much later, but they are skills that preschoolers LITERALLY (and in some cases, physically) are not developed to master yet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Handwriting is one of these skills. ➡️This caption is a truncated version of a larger article with citation. A child’s body needs years of physical and cognitive development (bones, brains, eyes) to be ready for this complicated skill. We cannot rush the body development of a child - they develop at their own pace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What can you do at home? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Understand that handwriting is NOT a skill to force or rush. Let this one develop naturally*. Note: Some kids will naturally develop handwriting skills young. This post is about expecting/forcing all preschools to print. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instead of focusing on letter printing, provide your child with years of hands-on play: digging, painting, molding, hammering, stacking, puzzling, zipping, buttoning, and eating. Handwriting is not a skill that is solely developed through pen and paper. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Academic standards have changed, but body development has not. While we can’t shift these standards today, we can adjust what we know about early childhood and how we apply it to our kids.
