Julia Prinsep Stephen (nΓ©e Jackson, formerly Mrs Duckworth) photographed in 1856 was an English Pre-Raphaelite model and philanthropist. She was the wife of the biographer Leslie Stephen and mother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, members of the Bloomsbury Group. Julia Jackson was born in Calcutta to an Anglo-Indian family, and when she was two her mother and her two sisters moved back to England. She became the favourite model of her aunt, the celebrated photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, who made more than 50 portraits of her. Through another maternal aunt, she became a frequent visitor at Little Holland House, then home to an important literary and artistic circle, and came to the attention of a number of Pre-Raphaelite painters who portrayed her in their work. Married to Herbert Duckworth, a barrister, in 1867 she was soon widowed with three infant children. Devastated, she turned to nursing, philanthropy and agnosticism, and found herself attracted to the writing. She was the third daughter of Dr. John and Maria Pattle Jackson, and was born in India. At age two, she moved to England with her mother. Julia Prinsep Jackson later became a model for Pre-Raphaelite painters as well as for Julia Margaret Cameron. She was also the mother of Virginia Woolf. This photograph is taken when she was about 10 years old, and is from Leslie Stephen's photograph album. Albumen photograph, 11.3 cm. x 9.4 cm. Photograph courtesy of the Mortimer Rare Book Room, Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts. While the Smith College collection dates this to 1856, Cox and Ford date it to 1860 (p.102). As a photo dealer, we have sold or gifted over sixty Julia Margaret Camerons despite their rarity, and we usually have at least a handful in stock. She is one of my personal favorites, and I even had one over my bed for many years, until a friend who is an art advisor tempted it away from me for a client. My all-time favorite Cameron photograph that we have had to date is this rather spectacular print of Mrs. Duckworth, who was mother to the writer Virginia Woolf. In her novel To the Lighthouse (1927), Virginia Woolf portrayed her mother as the searching, sensitive Mrs. Ramsay, ever suspended in thought. β€œShe bore about with her, she could not help knowing it, the torch of her beauty; she carried it erect into any room that she entered.” Believe it or not, the actual print is even better. Julia Margaret Cameron: Mrs. Herbert Duckworth (Julia Jackson). Albumen print from wet plate negative, 10-7/8 x 9 in. (276 x 229 mm), 1867/1867, on original mount. 14487. Titled 'Mrs. Duckworth' in pencil in unknown hand on mount recto. See: Cox and Ford, Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs , 2003, pl.306, (p.220); Julia Margaret Cameron's Women; and Weiss, Julia Margaret Cameron: Photographs to electrify you with delight and startle the world, all covers for a flopped version of this image. It has been suggested that Cameron flopped this photograph to soften it to keep more with her preferences. It is certainly one of, if not THE best print of this image existent. It is now in the private collection of an important 19th-century photography collector.
