Do you ever think about how, 10, 20 years ago, you wouldn’t have known something was wrong with your dog? Or you would have just said, well, that’s just aging? I do, a lot. . This isn’t necessarily me needing validation, simply a reflection. My first dog was as a child, and while I was occasionally involved in training her and husbandry for her, I didn’t sit with her every night, doing massage and finding new problems. . I find myself occasionally longing for that naïveté. Not because I’m frustrated at my ability to make my dogs’ lives better, but simply because it was simpler to not know. It was simpler before I read the scientific research, before I knew about board certified vets, before every lump and bump gave me a new worry. . To me, knowing more often means an obligation to do more, to address a problem, where others might be willing to live with it and not address it. This means I spend a lot of money on my dogs, and I’m glad I can! But it also does make me oddly nostalgic for something else. . As the semester gets really underway, I’ve started to have a lot of additional self-doubt about the dogs, their welfare, and what’s reasonable. . A couple of points before I dive in: a) I’m a recovering perfectionist, and I often have unreasonable expectations; b) February is a yearly struggle for me, for reasons I don’t totally understand, and c)I have perhaps unrealistic expectations for the dogs (…see A), and d) there’s basically no readily accessible public land in this part of the state. . As much as we all say Instagram is a highlight reel, I think it’s still all too easy to get sucked into the idea that we should be spending all day working toward our dogs’ fulfillment. I certainly get sucked into this, and feel a tremendous amount of guilt and self doubt about it as a result. I miss the days when I could leave work and take the dogs for an offleash hike and not have to go more than 10 minutes from our house to make it happen, but I don’t miss the context we were living in. I miss the days when I didn’t feel guilty, or suspect that I was doing enrichment more to wear the dogs out, than because I wanted them to be fulfilled and have that as part of our relationship. . The reality is, when I take a step back from my own criticism: the dogs and I are building and working on our relationships whether that’s my intention or not. Training tonight was just gear desensitization (I have no energy and it’s depression February), but we still did a thing that we’re working on. No, none of us find neighborhood walks that fulfilling, but it’s more fulfilling (and safer for Sirius) than time in the backyard where he’s going to fence fight the neighbor dog. Things don’t have to be ideal to be okay. They don’t even have to be good 😂. The point is that I’m putting in some amount of time, and yeah, maybe my own goal is peace in the house, but even five minutes of my undivided attention is *something*. . I really want the snow to come back 😫 . If you don’t already know, this is an El Niño year. El Niño and La Niña are both part of the southern oscillation cycle (commonly referred to as ENSO), which is a series of weather patterns that forms in the Pacific Ocean. Meteorologists watch storms pretty closely to determine what kind of year it will be, and then make predictions. . Not every year is affected by ENSO, but climate change is likely impacting the formation of ENSO cycles, leading them to be more common and more severe. Severe can mean a lot of different things, but for my part of northern Colorado, this winter has been warm and dry so far. When I was growing up in the front range, El Niño meant heavy, wet, spring snow. I’m desperately hoping for that at this point, because it has been DRY. I miss the snow for fun reasons, but also for water security reasons! . Sirius has Valley Fever. . This is probably the best of the possible outcomes. As long as his liver can tolerate fluconazole, he’s got a good prognosis. We don’t have to do a brachoscopy, he doesn’t have to have a painful flush, etc. . I, however, am fielding some pretty significant guilt. On the one hand, what’s done is done. On the other hand? He’s probably had this since 2015. More than half his life. Now, it hasn’t slowed him down much, if at all. He’s had a ton of happy, busy, exploratory years. He’s hiked and run and done nosework with this. And…it had to feel pretty shitty at times. We also don’t have an explanation (and probably won’t) as to why it’s flaring up now. My guess is that he’s gotten older and his chlostridium overgrowth in the fall (and associated metronidazole) lightly trashed his immune system and made him more susceptible. . I’ll probably be slowly documenting what I learn about this, and how his treatment goes, if you want to follow along. I will say: if you live in the SW and your dog gets a cough (and you can afford it) - get a coccidiosis titre done. . Watching your dog age is both a blessing and a curse. . I feel incredibly lucky that I get to watch Sirius age. That I get to see him stay a bright, vibrant, and happy dog even as his face goes silver. It’s a luxury to have an old dog. . It is also hard. Each day brings slightly different challenges, slightly different worries. I groomed him yesterday, and he showed some worrying behavior on the grooming table. I think he was tired; I think his difficulty maintaining his balance was fatigue. Still, it is all too easy to dive into the rabbit hole of “what ifs.” He had a check up with an internist last week, and there are some concerns. The reality is, as for all of us, he has a limited number of days left. As much as he can push my buttons with his barking, he’s still my precious boy, and I’m trying to find the balance that gives us as much life together, while also keeping him as comfy as possible. . I didn’t end up having a word for 2023, but I want to get back into the idea. . The last year was a lot. Sirius’s health has not been the worst, but it has not been easy. Kestrel had horrible allergies into May (we will be seeing CSU’s dermatology department in February to hopefully get some answers); I was very sick with norovirus in March and had Covid for the first time in October (for sixteen DAYS). It was a lot. Keeping us all going felt like a lot. . But: there were some great moments. Kestrel and I repaired our nosework teamwork. Sirius tried his hand at an NW2 twice, and didn’t get it twice. But he did it with his questionable hips and his slower body and we learned and had fun. Kestrel earned her BCAT (ribbon nowhere in sight, which I keep telling myself doesn’t matter, but I really want it?!!) and had so much fun at her FastCAT events this year. . We did this a lot last year, but I think our word for this year is PERSIST. There’s a lot going on in our community, in our state, country, and planet. I’m just trying to keep going with as much happiness and ethical living as possible. As I tell my students, I’m doing what helps me sleep at night. . My day started by sleeping in until 9am because that's all Calli would let me do. And while she might be filling out a smidge, she's still a rather lean noodle of an Aussie. She can stay petite. I'm perfectly okay with that. 😂 Calli and I had agility last night at Flash Go. Meg set up quite the sequence for our novice class. When it was our turn to go, Tracy had a good laugh because on our first run, I didn't do a single cross. Of any kind. Not a front. Not a blind. 😅 She walked it with me a second time and gave me some pointers on where to be and when to move. Our second and third runs went much, much better. Calli was focused right in. She listened to every single verbal cue and did her wraps beautifully. We started working on the teeter totter and back sides last night as well. I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving anymore. If people want to, they should. I have never enjoyed the holiday or the food, and as I got older, I increasingly realized how ugly it felt to me to celebrate the cultural and physical genocide of Indigenous peoples. I hate that there’s one day a year dedicated to gratitude, as though that erases every other feeling we have, or allows us to be unthoughtful the rest of the time. . I am filled with gratitude for being able to have this stance, for being able to not interact with a single human soul yesterday, to run and then lay in bed and read for fun. I am full of gratitude that I took the dogs for a short hike on Wednesday, and watched Sirius move his body beautifully not just that day, but the next, and the next. . I am grateful for my community, online and in person, and especially those that continue to offer new opportunities to learn and connect. . I am grateful for these things every day. I don’t need, or want a single day for this. . Erinnert mich irgendwie an eine Robbe 🤭🦭Allerdings waren eine helfende Hand, eine Leberwursttube und Photoshop im Spiel ☝️ Auch wenn Aiko keine Kürbisse auf der Nase balancieren kann, ein neues Feature hat er sich in den letzten Wochen zugelegt. Er liegt in der neuen Wohnung richtig oft in seinen Körbchen (steht jetzt auch strategisch günstiger für ihn 🤭) und ich leg da immer noch eine Decke rein, damit das Körbchen länger sauber bleibt. Er hat’s also schon recht luxuriös, aber es könnt halt immer noch besser sein, ist sein Lebensmotto🤓Deshalb faltet er diese Decke mit Pfoten und Maul und großem Tamtam jetzt immer zu einem Kopfkissen 😄 Finds so menschlich, dass er sich immer mal wieder neue Gewohnheiten zu legt. Er ist ja mein erster Hund und ich bin einfach davon ausgegangen, dass jeder Hund bestimmte Vorlieben hat und dann bleibt das mehr oder weniger so. Sirius has been dealing with a clostridium infection for about a month now, and I’m interested in getting some advice from y’all. . The scientific research on chronic clostridium overgrowth is pretty limited (as far as I’ve found so far), but VCA seems to confirm that this is, in fact, something that can occur. Two rounds of metronidazole has not killed it off (and I frankly have some concerns that 7 days is not a long enough time…). I’m supplementing with pre- and probiotics, and trying to give him as much fiber as possible (again, VCA indicates this can help). I’ll be calling our vet tomorrow, but I can’t get him in to be seen for about ten days. If y’all have any evidence-based suggestions or info that I can share with the vet that might help, I’m all ears! . He is aging, but he makes it look pretty good (as long as you don’t look too closely at his hips 😒) . People sometimes ask me how old he is, and they’re stunned when I say he’s 10. He still acts so young; he has lots of energy, lots of motivation to play, and a very goofy, happy disposition. He’s still wildly smart; teaching a dog to track at 10 is probably not what most people would do, but it gives him another opportunity to use his body in a low-impact way while also giving him a great mental outlet. He loves to sniff, he’s very good at it, and we’re having lots of fun. It’s hard to imagine or know what the future will hold for him, but I’m enjoying our time. . I did something sort of dumb yesterday, and I keep turning it over in my mind. . The dogs haven’t done nosework in probably two weeks as a result of my trip. It’s been pretty hot here (mid to upper 90s) and isn’t cooling off until late in the night, so nosework is my go-to activity when we don’t do a second walk at night. I thought nothing of having them do a standard container search last night, but…it did not go well. . When I picked them up from boarding, I originally thought to myself, “I should give them three days to settle back in before I really ask anything of them.” Instead of sticking to that, I worked them on day 2, and I was honestly stunned when they didn’t alert. . I ultimately called off most of their box searches (I gave them two options, because the first hide was under an overhead vent and I thought airflow might be the problem) and we went back to container basics. All good in the end, they did some very easy work and got high praise and lots of snacks, but it was so interesting to see them do so poorly, when otherwise giving them ten days off has never been a problem. Hanging out in CDG, waiting to go home! . I had a really lovely trip; it’s so nice to have a different set of responsibilities and take a break from fretting about the dogs for a while. I always know this to be true, but still stress about leaving them, especially for more than a few days. Having now done it, I am so glad I did! And so glad to get to snuggle them tomorrow 🥰 . Dropped these two class clowns off at boarding today. I know they’re going to do great, and I’m excited to travel, but leaving them stresses me out. . I’m totally fine with traveling without the dogs; I think it’s nice to have a break from our norm, to be honest, and I think it’s good to leave our comfort zone and have new experiences for our brains. That said, it does always worry me to leave them, and it worries me even more now with Sirius’s hip issues. Again, I know their boarding facility will take great care of them, but…the worries creep in any way. . Here’s to managing our worries for the sake of new experiences and fun! . We were slowly but surely getting back out again, and then my allergies decided that no, outside was bad. . This was taken mid-May when the smoke from Alberta came down south. The number of fires currently burning in Canada is not unprecedented for the summer, but the timing and location (specifically of the Nova Scotia fires) is particularly unusual, and is likely the result of (drumroll please): climate change. . For those of you in Colorado who have indicated that you think this year will be a low fire year: maybe. But the amount of rain we have received (again…likely climate change) has built up a bigger fuel base, so if/when it dries out, we are all incredibly susceptible to serious grass and wildfires. . All this to say, climate change is real, and we should all have an evacuation plan and kit in place. You will almost certainly not have the chance to get things together in the event of a disaster, so have a plan! And have a plan for this increasingly likely smoke exposure, too. .
