Happy Easter! Do you hunt eggs for Easter? Are they real eggs, plastic, or chocolate eggs? This is my favorite time of year, and hunting eggs is something I do every year. My grandpa always hid eggs in the most creative places and had fun watching our family of 22 (ish) try to find them all. One year. He hid a dozen eggs outside for each person who was there. 22 dozen eggs! 😳 We spent hours trying to find them all, but I think we found roughly half of the eggs he hid. They were real eggs, so we suspect some animals had a nice Easter treat as well. His love for Eastr became my love for Easter, and I carried out that tradition while my kids were growing up. I hid eggs, decorated, made elaborate baskets, and cooked a large meal. As my kids grew up and moved out, the holiday started to look different. My kids weren't as interested in hunting the eggs themselves, but they have now surprised me by hiding eggs for me so that I can hunt them and continue to enjoy my favorite holiday. Now that I'm married, my husband has gotten in on hiding my eggs and loves to make sure I have a basket with a bunch of goodies. This year looks different again as I am still recovering from major illness. I am not well enough to cook the elaborate me I usually do, so it will be a low-key celebration this year. Someone asked me recently what my favourite holiday was and I instantly knew the answer, ferragosto! Celebrated on August 15 th in all of Italy, the night skies that time of year are filled with falling stars and meteors. Specifically , my beloved Florence has plenty of vibrant summer traditions, and none are as romantic as the Nights of San Lorenzo. Traditionally, San Lorenzo was killed by Roman oppressors on August 10th. The saint came to a grizzly end, being roasted over hot coals, but the sparks from those coals live on - in the form of the Perseid meteor shower. Well, at least that’s the tradition. When the Perseids fill the summer night sky, Florentine locals count shooting stars as they streak through the atmosphere (and dine on free lasagne and watermelon in the Piazza San Lorenzo). The whole city seems to come out for the night, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
