On Wednesday 15th May the students, staff and alumni occupied the Diamond - home to the University of Sheffield’s specialist engineering facilities. This movement represents an escalation of student protest against the University’s involvement in the arms trade. It marks the two-week anniversary of the encampment and the 76th anniversary of the Nakba - the beginning of the violent, mass displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians from their home in 1948. The Palestinians are still under heavy bombardment. They are being systematically ethnically cleansed and University of Sheffield stands accused of connections with companies which are supplying weapons to the Israeli armed forces. Yesterday, @hcw4pnyc joined #WithinOurLifetime (https://t.me/wolpalestine) in the streets of Bay Ridge for Nakba 76. This annual march commemorates 76 years of the ongoing Nakba in Palestine, bringing together the community in the heart of a predominantly Arab and Muslim neighborhood. However, we saw the NYPD at its most brutal. Officers swarmed in, attacking our comrades—shoving, beating many until they bled, and arresting attendees, including minors. They pulled off hijabs and placed members of the press in illegal chokeholds. This is no surprise as NYPD pigs have brutalized Black and Brown communities for decades. During the rally, we formed a healthcare worker barrier between the pigs and the organizers to protect their voices from the mercenaries who want to silence them. Despite the NYPD SRG and other units’ attempts to suppress the movement, they will never stop us. The streets of NYC are ours. The story of Hadia Jabali. “I was born in 1948, the year of the Nakba. My homeland is Haifa in Palestine. When I was just forty days old, my parents took me to Syria. I once had a house. I worked for the UNRWA. I studied law. Now I am seventy-four years old. One day, I looked up and found I had nothing left.” Hadia now lives in Lebanon. “Last summer I was alone,” she said. “I was very ill. I fell to the ground due to high blood pressure, losing my memory. I gave the keys to my house to the neighbor, just in case. If I were strong, or if my husband was with me, I would not have a problem, but I am old and weak. My children have gone. One daughter flew from Lebanon to Egypt, then made it across the water to Italy. It took six days. My second daughter, Suad, arranged transport for her from Italy to Austria. From Austria she went to Sweden, where she stayed. Their brother, Bassel, left the country by plane. He was arrested in the Netherlands. He was trying to reach his sister in Austria, but he did not succeed.” Hadia’s family has attempted to get their mother out of Lebanon. They hired an expensive lawyer, but he only took their money without helping. Hadia applied for a Schengen Visa several times, but each time was refused on account of her Palestinian passport. “This is not a real passport,” she was told. And yet it is the only such document she has. “My husband’s parents died at sea on a journey from Palestine to Jordan when he was three months old. Drowned. Many decades later, history came full circle. On September 6, 2014, my husband drowned in the Mediterranean Sea aboard a ship carrying 200 Palestinians. The sinking was apparently connected to a Mossad attack. The route of his journey was from Syria through Egypt to Gaza. That night he called me. NAKBA “CATASTROPHE” - Moving commemoration of the ongoing #Nakba which saw at least 750,000 Palestinians (at the time more than 65% of the population) forcibly expelled from their lands by #terror paramilitaries and 15,000 killed to make way for the creation of #Israel in 1948. Some 440 towns and villages were razed, as whole communities were forced into exile. Israel’s “limited operation” in Rafah has now forced 800,000 Palestinians to flee. That’s more than half of the 1.4 million Palestinians sheltering there.
