I’ve been silent on here for a hot minute while I’ve gone through so many life changes and a self-discovery journey. I am slowly getting back to knowing what I should hold space for and let go of and recently reminded that my story may help even one person. It’s not easy y’all! Not. Easy! I listen to this podcast (The Mindset Mentor) daily at the gym or walking the dog. The last episode I heard punched me in the gut. WHY do we always go back to what’s familiar even if it’s toxic?? When we live in a familiar comfort zone, we just accept what will always be. Sometimes good, sometimes all the wrong. An eighth grade poetry assignment had me write my favorite poem. It’s “Dreams” by Langston Hughes. Verses I’ve held onto my entire life. When we fall back into that comfort zone and accept or settle, those dreams are dying. Dying! I make art because I’ve always needed to escape this place, a way to channel my rage, my grief, my loneliness. Today, I’m an illustrator and I’m a community worker and I may even be ‘Blue Mountains Woman of The Year’ but I am ALWAYS a survivor of men’s violence. My father was my first abuser age 0 to age 16, then the mistreatment came from male friends, teenage boyfriends, strangers in the street, men in doctor’s coats, uncles, bosses, step dads, journalists, politicians… it just keeps going. Each and every time I get upset or I get angry or even if I just get quiet, it’s labelled as a personality defect. ‘Oh that’s just Ailie’ they say… ‘she’s the problem, not you mate’ never you. This systemic, relentless harassment has utterly shaped my life both privately and professionally. It has stolen my choice, my psychological well-being and now my physical health. The protest sign I’m holding was made by a 17 year old… I met her when she was just 13 and even then she already knew the world was not safe for us. Acknowledgement of gender based violence is not anti-men it is anti-patriarchy. A woman is violently killed every 4 days, 1 is too many. And this had doubled since the same time last year. Standing alongside so many fired up women yesterday gave me hope, we are far from done fighting. Seeing men stand with us, and saying ‘how can we end this’, instead of ‘not all men’, that is the support we need. Men holding other men accountable when they make derogatory and misogynistic comments. Men calling out behaviour that continues to suppress and normalise the abuse of women. Women should not have to beg for their lives. We are calling for the 5 demands in the last slide, especially adequate funding for support services, and for the government to take this issue seriously. Men’s violence towards women is not a women's issue, it's a human rights issue. Given that our organisations are full of humans, this is also an organisational issue. There were marches all over Australia today with tens of thousands of people rallying against gender-based violence. In Australia, a woman has been killed on average every four days so far this year. We need to stop talking about women's safety and start to take true action against men's violence. So how can we start reframing our conversations? 📣 Equality is non-negotiable: Men's violence against women stems from power imbalances. How will your organisation strive for true gender equality in all aspects of the employee experience? 📣 Consent is mandatory: Respect for women means respecting their autonomy and right to say no. How will you promote a culture of enthusiastic consent in all workplace relationships? 📣 Education is essential: By educating men and boys about healthy masculinity, respect for women, and the impacts of violence, we can prevent future incidents. How will you embed such learning in your organisation, and how might you support learning in employee households? 📣 Accountability is crucial: Perpetrators of violence must be held accountable for their actions. Let's support survivors and ensure perpetrators face the consequences of their behaviour. Will your senior leaders have the courage to terminate perpetrators who might also happen to be ‘high performers’? 📣 Community involvement is key: Ending men's violence against women requires a collective effort. Let's engage communities, organisations, and individuals in promoting respect, equality, and safety for all. Has your organisation actively supported any initiatives, not-for-profits or programs that are tackling gender-based violence? Sounds great, but what are you going to do to help change the landscape? Because what we’ve all been doing so far isn’t working. After marching for the first time on Thursday for Anzac Day, today I marched for a very different reason. I was honoured to attend and speak at the No More National Rally to End Violence Against Women in Perth. To have my three sons with me made it all the more special. Thank you to the organisers of this amazing event, @whatwereyouwearing_ , and all the amazing speakers and volunteers that made this event and all others around Australia this weekend so powerful. #enoughisenough Let's talk about some little known stuff about domestic abuse. 1. A woman may accuse someone you know of domestic abuse and just because your experience of that person is not abusive, does not mean HER'S is not. Family is not everything, respect is everything. 2. Domestic abusers convince themselves that they're the victims. And they convince others. They have people who make excuses for them. 3. It is rare to find a domestic abuse victim who hasn't also been a victim of financial abuse, coercive control, gaslighting. (Which are all abuses) 4. Domestic abuse perpetrators have one public persona and a different one inside the home 5. Abusers know their own behaviours are wrong but they often wont admit they do them. 6. Most people don't believe women when they disclose abuse. Because (see point 1) 7. Abusers make excuses for their own behaviours and convince everyone that their victim is crazy/ hard to live with. That she's a ball and chain. An abuser often has all the freedoms he wants in a relationship and she is severely hampered by being responsible for young children, no financial freedom and coercion. 8. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone 9. You know someone who is being abused 10. Women are at the most danger when they leave an abusive partner, even someone who was not previously physically abusive. The abuse ramps up when she dares to seek a different life. 11. There are abuse perpetrators in all careers. Teachers, police, tradies, artists, armed forces, Health, Law, retail etc. Everywhere. YOU. LOOK. Everywhere. 12. Abusers don't abuse on the first date. They may be charming but not always overtly charming. They may be quitely charming or have a shy and innocent demeanour. Their behaviours become worse over time, months, years, decades. Until they've whittled away their victims confidence and support in every aspect of their victims life. 13. Perhaps if more people in our community stood up and stopped enabling these behaviours, the perpetrators wouldn't feel supported to abuse. 14. Most people wont give to charities that support domestic abuse survivors because there's an undercurrent of victim blaming in our society.
