TONIGHT is the 10th SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC KINO NIGHT at Sputnik am Südstern (@sputnik_kino). During the show, 15 Berlin songwriters present their music videos in a rooftop kino while locals and fellow songwriters cheer and eat popcorn. It’s such a great event, and 10 is one of those numbers when we look back and say, “Hey, we did it ten times! Incredible!!” It was an idea that Berlin allowed me to materialize, and this is what I love about this city. I’m also super thankful for editor and songwriter Olivia Mamberti (@oliviamamberti) for making this event a fun and theatrical experience 10 times in a row. It wouldn’t be possible without her. She even makes trailers, people (slide 3)! Thank you to all the Berlin songwriters who submitted and shared their work beyond YouTube, allowing us to meet in real time and space to connect to our local music culture. Thank you to all the music video producers who are making top notch content. I never imagined the show would be this good. Last Sunday I played at the yearly comic bazar organized by Art Horse Comics (@arthorsecomics) - a talented collective of comic illustrators living and working in Berlin. My daughter was there, too, and completely stole the show while she played with everything in my busking suitcase. By ‘playing’ I mean disorganizing everything in it. It made me happy to see her smiling at my feet while I sang. My friend and Berlin songwriter Son of a Pigeon (@son.of7pigeon) was also there with his camera to capture some authentic moments. Berlin illustrator Tiziano (@tiziopolis) drew a colorful picture of me performing. I felt so thankful and fulfilled afterwards. I love local events like these because they create a space for local community members to meet directly, exchange ideas, and express themselves in our 3D world. It’s how we preserve local culture. This Sunday (April 23rd) is the 13th SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC NIGHT (@supportlocalmusicberlin) with 9 talented local songwriters, each performing 3 original songs with a stellar band of musical magicians at one of Berlin’s finest venues: Prachtwerk (@prachtwerkberlin) - See photo II for the complete lineup. Last month, I had to watch my baby while hosting, which was no problem at all. She loves live concerts, and I love that I can bring her with me to these events without being concerned for her safety. There’s no smoking indoors. It’s clean. There’s plenty of space for crawling. The staff and people who attend are kind. She hangs out with the artists backstage. The venue welcomes and respects everyone who walks in the door, which means she’s surrounded by her community while being immersed in an international local music culture. The SINGLE RELEASE TOUR continues with a pre-release, album cover reveal of the upcoming single “Songwriters (a song about freedom)“ written by Bryan Grayson (@bryangrayson) and me. The song drops on Thursday, April 20th. The inspiration behind the lyrics started with an idea to write a fun song about a modern day phenomenon: ordering weed online – something that‘s been legal to do in the US for many years, but still remains illegal in many parts of Europe, Berlin included. I still remember visiting my brother in San Francisco some 10 years ago when his roommate legally ordered a few grams on Skype and it came to his door in 10 minutes. This totally blew my mind. Even though ordering weed online was the initial spark of inspiration, by the end of it, we both realized that the song is actually about freeeom, but I'll let the song explain why. But I will leave you with this: When society hears their favorite author likes to drink bottles upon bottles of fine whiskey on a regular basis, it‘s totally acceptable. No one judges the author or stops reading their books. The author has nothing to hide. But when you hear your teacher, doctor, or grandma prefers smoking a bit of weed over drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, it becomes scandalous and even criminal?! There’s a reason why doctors don’t subscribe medical whiskey. There is no medical subscription for booze. What I’m trying to say is that it‘s time we let hemp be what hemp is: an incredible plant, a pure product of nature, which, when not abused, has tremendous benefits and healing properties. The four songs to be released during my upcoming SINGLE RELEASE TOUR were recorded with a live band of friends back in 2020 in Berlin city. Having no real plan of what to play or how to produce the music, Bryan Grayson (@bryangrayson) and I just wanted to record some songs we wrote and see what happens. We called 4 friends and asked them that day to accompany us with their intuitive musicianship. Scott Hildebrand (@scotthilde) played bass and did backing vocals. He probably had a shaker at some point. DEANisHOME (@deanishome_music) played drums and banjo, and was as happy as a child behind a drum set. The always soothing Lila Despoix did backing vocals and, without any rehearsal, learned the lyrics and melody of a duet Bryan and I wrote. The results were flawless. Lila will appear as a featured artist during the tour ☀️ Finally, my friend and guitarist Leon Rosky was visiting from Bavaria, and he added some fingerpicking flavors that really added some spice to the marinade. For me, these recordings capture a special moment in time. We could’ve recorded any song, but we chose these for some reason. The single ‘STRETCH MY MIND’ was also recorded during this sesssion and is already on all streaming platforms. The other 4 will follow during the tour. The tour lineup drops tomorrow, and you’ll be able to listen no matter where you are. Our homeboy Marian Hafenstein (@marian.hafenstein) recorded the tracks in his studio with a mattress in front of the drums. Juan Borgatti (@borgass) did the mixing in his tiny home studio while having tea with me. He also added some bass to the songs ❤️ I used an online software to do the mastering. All in Neukölln ❤️ For the past year, I’ve been organizing and hosting two reoccurring events to give Berlin locals an offline cultural experience aimed at connecting us to our community and bringing our local music culture to the forefront of our awareness. These two events are SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC NIGHT (@supportlocalmusicberlin) and ‘Berlin Buskers on Stage’ (@berlinstreetmusic). This Wednesday, you can experience them both. I suggest meeting your friends at 6pm for dinner at Azzam (@azzam_restaurant), just around the corner from Das Gift (@dasgiftberlin), a cozy corner pub where ‘Berlin Buskers on Stage’ will begin at 7pm. Street musician Giorgia Job (@giorgiajob.music) performs from 7:15-8pm. Berlin busker DEAN is HOME (@deanishome_music) follows at 8:15. Both artists are explosively contagious and have never done a show together. The music ends at 9pm. Free entry but be sure to tip the buskers! After the live music, we’ll be walking over to the nearby IL KINO (@ilkinoberlin) to watch music videos on the big screen by Berlin-based musicians and producers. Thank you to the people at THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS who stopped, listened, and supported the slew of buskers playing street music up and down the sidewalk between the Brandenburg Gate and Alexanderplatz. Half of the festival experience is the street music. Anyone who goes will tell you this, but for whatever reason, the event organizers don‘t mention this online. They don‘t even repost us busking when others tag us in their stories. If you only saw the festival from their website or IG page, there was no street music. So I won‘t bother tagging them here either. From now on, I‘ll just call it THE FESTIVAL OF BUSKERS and pretend there is no light show. BERLIN BUSKERS ON STAGE returns for it’s second season TOMORROW! All summer long, Berlin’s buskers were making our lives sweeter by giving us thier street music all over the city. With colder weather approaching, I’ve partnered up with BERLIN STREET MUSIC (@berlinstreetmusic) to give our beloved buskers a warm stage at Das Gift (@dasgiftberlin), a cozy and friendly bar in the heart of Neukölln. Like all street music, it’s free to come in and listen. We want to make the street music experience as authentic as possible on stage, so Zoe Jamileh and Scott Hildebrand will even be performing with their personal street gear. Lately, I’ve been spending most of my time organizing and hosting events to reconnect, rebuild, and define our local culture in the real world. After years of having our public spaces closed down and our community struggling psychologically because of it, as a cultural initiator, I felt I needed to focus more on our community to help regrow what had been taken out of our real world and forced to function, but never really flourish, in the digital one, namely, our local culture. As a result, I initiated the monthly SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC NIGHT at Prachtwerk (@prachtwerkberlin), as well as the weekly event BERLIN BUSKERS ON STAGE every Tuesday at Das Gift (@dasgiftberlin). I worked together with fellow songwriters and musicians in Berlin, and together we sold out the event at Prachtwerk and packed the bar last week at Das Gift. The people at these events have been so wonderful. For me, this is a clear indicator that people’s happiness and mental health is strongly linked to our relationship with our community and local culture. I’ve heard so many thank yous and kind words for organizing the events, but it’s something I know we are doing together. Thank you to everyone who’s been connecting to their local culture and community lately. It’s been healing and eye opening. Nonetheless, for my own happiness and mental health, I also realize I need to find time to do what I love and perform in public. Last Tuesday at the event at Das Gift, @alvamattssonn and @donklarasjostrand told me they came to the show to hear me sing, as well. “Less talking, more singing 😂” So I’m gonna start singing more :) In addition to hosting, I’ll be playing a couple songs at the start and end of the show tonight. It was about midnight at our Thanksgiving Potato Jam (the spuds replaced the bird), when Berlin-based songwriter Scott Hildebrand suggested we all sing an old American folk song called ‘Goin’ Up Cripple Creek’. No one knows who wrote it or how old it is, but Scott has a passion for these traditional tunes. At one point he announced we should only play originals or traditional songs, and I thought that was a great idea 😄 He taped the words to the chorus on the wall (photo 2) and we quickly caught on. I played harp and shaker. Lila Despoix played Cajon (@lilas.music). DEANisHOME played guitar (@deanishome_music). Scott picked the banjo. Everyone else sang gleefully in unison. Photographer Roman Elizarenko (@roman.elizarenko) captured the moment. The moment has passed, but the song has been stuck in my head ever since. Yep. This used to be the only way songs survived beyond the songwriter’s lifetime: just by passing it on in the here and now. Backstage moments. Looking back on the gigs we’ve had this sunmer, we’ve had such a wonderful time meeting up again, practicing, recording, and playing in front of audiences. Life with less restrictions has really helped us reconnect as a band, to our community, our local culture, and build on our bond as friends. Human connection can only holistically happen where you’re standing and with the people sharing space around you. At this moment, you are not connecting to me as a human, but to a video and text I’m sharing with you through a screen. It has value and it’s cool, but local is LIFE not electricity. It’s finally Wednesday! Which means our psychedelic funk band THE HIDDEN KEYS (@thehiddenkeysmusic) is giving a free concert TONIGHT at Die Weisse Rose (@weisserose_berlin) in Schöneberg! Get ready to dance, Berlin! The good times starts at 7pm with Berlin-based songwriter Jumana (@mitohnebitte) and her band. We’ll start at around 8pm. This is a proper venue with lots of space for grooving to the music!! 💃🏼❤️🕺We’re excited about this news, because one year ago, we had to tell everyone to stay seated, keep distance, and wear masks. The video above was taken during that time. We wrote this song ‘Ain’t No Place For Sitting’ to get people out of their seats, so it was challenging to perform it in a place forbidding everyone to dance. When we played the song, however, the audience couldn’t resist the vibes and got up to dance anyway! After so many months of not performing, it gave me goosebumps to feel the energy of a moving audience again. One year later, it’s been healing reconnecting to Berlin’s culture and community these past few months. Can’t wait to be on stage with the band tonight! Regarding the post above, while in a semi-drunken state after the Laksmi open mic, I told Roman one of my dreams in life is to have a photo of him taking of photo of my phone while I’m taking a selfie of us. I accidently recorded a video, but the photo came out just fine. Much love to all the camera people in Berlin! I hope to do more posts like these to give the people behind the lens a face. During Laksmi’s (@laksmibarberlin) acoustic open mic in Berlin last week, an unintentional heckler sat in the front row and rambled over every songwriter and poet presenting their work on stage. For hours, the guests and bar staff tried hushing him so the audience could listen, but he seemingly thought he was adding to the show. I wasn’t in the audience before my performance, so I didn’t know everyone was annoyed with him by the time I got up to play. I personally thought his unintentional heckling sounded like someone vibing to my song, so I was confused when the bartender came over to ask him to leave. Not feeling he was disturbing my performance, I decided to spontaneously incorporate him into my song ‘When Mama Goes to Berghain’. In doing so, the audience and bartender suddenly saw him as an fun addition to the music and he was able to stay until the end of the open mic. It was a moment I’ll never forget, and even the bartender retrospectively appreciated how I got him involed. It showed me how live music has the power to connect our local community in powerful ways. On episode 66 of ‘Hymns for Porridge’, I broke the oats with Berlin-based songwriter ‘The Night Gardener’ (@thenightgardenerrr) 🥣 His real name is Oliver, and he was one of the first songwriters I met in Berlin in 2017. It was nice catching up with him last summer and getting to know more about his work ethic, world view, and approach to songwriting. Oliver grew up in the GDR and has a view on human rights that I personally don’t hear too often in today’s society. He argues that people should have the right to work as a full-time creative without needing to worry about paying for food or shelter. These things, he believes, are a human right, not something one should earn. Even as a songwriter, Oliver doesn’t follow trends. He likes the old way of releasing albums periodically over singles every month or so, which is why he often seems to be not working. But don’t let his lack of monthly releases fool you.
