The Backstory: Ariana Grande • • • Ariana Grande has been keeping busy, and dropped her seventh album on Friday. When filming for the Wicked movie was halted by the strike, she went to the studio just to see what would happen. The Backstory: Jacob Collier • • • With the fourth and final volume released, Jacob Collier has completed his Djesse series of albums. We were lucky enough to attend a press conference hosted by @1824 and we learned so much about this project. For starters, Jacob thought that once this project was completed, his career as an artist would be able to fully begin. Clearly he didn’t recognize his abilities and future trajectory. Each volume of Djesse inhabits a different sonic universe. Volume 1 is orchestral, 2 is acoustic, 3 is electronic/digital, and this fourth volume is meant for humankind. Jacob packed 100,000 voices onto this album by conducting the audiences at his concerts. Because Jacob’s influences are so varied and could not be condensed to 20 songs, we have featured songs from each volume of Djesse, as well as a song from each collaborator on the album.
