Klô Pelgag - L'alchimie des Monstres (2013 - singer-songwriter, art pop, chamber folk, chamber pop, nouvelle chanson française, baroque pop) "A grass-coated beast whose best friend is a tiny sprite" In the summer of 2020, when there was nothing to do but lounge about in a post-graduation haze of alternating fun and sadness, my brother and I spent a day marathoning random movies from my long and varied to-do list. One of the first films we encountered during this deep dive was Ma vie de Courgette, a French production otherwise identified by the title My Life as a Zucchini on our American streaming platforms. It was a little bit of a slice of life, especially considering the stop-motion puppetry of each character and backdrop, but I found the overall aesthetic of the picture far more captivating and memorable than its story. It's been years since that experience, but the visuals of that quirky yet thoughtful movie remains pleasantly stuck in my mind. The work of Klô Pelgag is sort of the musical equivalent to this kind of cinematic eccentricity. The French-Canadian singer-songwriter sifts through orchestral atmospheres to initiate miniature scenes of simple but dreamy-eyed poetry, her every move not unlike those of the clouds and buildings in an animated movie's homemade world. L'alchimie des Monstres sets up bunting flags and decorative clotheslines for a festival of friendly fascination, its forty-eight minute event time lending just enough extra imagination to its audiences to invite them into Pelgag's own mind. Her lyrics, written in French but sung with universal finesse, are descriptive in a straightforward and physical way. Atop a bed of chamber pop and woolly folk, this artist's anecdotes might as well be animated, and her stringed instruments might as well link to puppet mascots. L'alchimie des Monstres and Ma vie de Courgette have nothing to do with one another in real life, but the moods of both French-speaking creative productions could not be more playfully alike. Klô Pelgag's debut album winds up art pop's jack-in-the-box until a little marionette clone comes out to serenade the crowd. She would only discover more colors and toys from here. ★★★½

G. Wells' The War of the Worlds is an infallible pillar of science fiction history, a modestly-sized epic on the nuances of an alien invasion and the fallout surrounding such an apocalypse-level event. In just a few hundred pages, this nineteenth-century novel asserts itself as a timeless classic, and with a line of creativity leading directly to the creation of several real-life rocket launches, it is impossible to overstate the lasting power of the book's technological predictions and thematic prose. Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds was released eighty years after its source material into a world where practically everything described in the publication- except its central extraterrestrial conflict, or at least so far- has come true. In this time, the literary work's area of expertise had been revolutionized time and time again by researchers, inventors, and so on. But Jeff Wayne was the only one to take on its personality, its sense of adventure and boundless curiosity. The ensuing theatrical audiobook-esque LP is nothing shy of unparalleled, its all-star cast second only to its cosmic spouts of disco and prog. Even more cinematic than most films, this is ninety minutes well spent. A rigidly faithful adaptation of an iconic novel's neverending relevance, Jeff Wayne's take on The War of the Worlds exists in a space just slightly separated from H. G. Wells' initial brushstroke of genius. An audience member need not experience one of the two takes on the story before the other, nor do they need to pair them up at any point. The original edition may have nailed its futuristic tone and blazed the trail for science fiction to eventually become science fact, but this generation-defining rock opera interpretation of The War of the Worlds is special in a ridiculously well-organized way. With this album oozing through the speakers like the aliens it so beautifully describes, one can almost picture the civilization of another planet. ★★★★½

The album seems so complex that one listen is not enough to understand the genius behind it. when i listened to it for the first time, i focused on the music production and was surprised at the precision with which the album was created. it seems as if every note was played with great care and passion. on the second listening, i translated the lyrics of each track. as you can guess from the title, Sara often refers to spirituality and religion. < HOLD - WILD NOTHING > 2023 40:26 dream pop / indie pop / synthpop ~ if anyone longs for music from the 1980s, you should listen to this release. It is made up of dream and indie pop songs laced with synthesizer melodies. personally, i was more convinced by the synthpop tracks, which stand out with a hint of mystery. the atmosphere of the whole composition is very rhythmic, although we will not find unique melodies and outstanding lyrics here. it is simply a solidly crafted album that will put you in a nostalgic mood. ~ my favourite track: - SUBURBAN SOLUTIONS - PRESIDIO - PRIMA - LITTLE CHAOS 3.5 / 5 ☆

< CALICO - RYAN BEATTY > 2023 33:42 indie folk / chamber pop / singer-songwriter ~ today, in a more relaxed tone, i decided to reach for Ryan Beatty's latest album. although i had the opportunity to listen to his music before, i will admit that I had somewhat forgotten about it. therefore i was even more surprised by this album right from the start. from the very first seconds, we get a dose of atmospheric music filled with poetic lyrics. you could say that this album is like the definition of the word 'cozy'. soothing melodies and calm vocals of the artist wrap the listener, introducing a warm atmosphere. ~ my favourite track: - RIBBONS - BRUISES OFF THE PEACH - BRIGHT RED 4 / 5 ☆

< RENDEZVOUS - JOGGING HOUSE > 2024 44:17 ambient / downtempo / electroacoustic ~ only after listening to this album for the third time did i get around to writing a few words about it. Jogging House is one of my favourite composers and creators of ambient music. his music gets to me every time, however, i am rarely able to express my opinion on it. Boris already has more than 20 albums in his discography, and it might seem difficult to find something new in this usually monotonous and repetitive genre. yet each album is a separate story, a journey to a new, undiscovered destination, or an opening to hidden emotions. now close your eyes and let the music take you to the most beautifully dreamed places. ~ my favourite track: - FARE - LIPS - MONOCLE 4 / 5 ☆

< TYLA - TYLA > 2024 38:09 afropiano / contemporary r&b /dance pop ~ it's time for some modern r'n'b by South African artist Tyla. until now, i was only familiar with her most popular track 'Water' . i appreciate the strong influences and touches of the afropiano genre in it, although i didn't like the song itself. however, if you like this song, i recommend listening to the whole album, which consists of songs with a very similar atmosphere. lots of energetic melodies, combined with delicate vocals by the artist. this album is a fantastic example of breaking through to the mainstream with a fresh new take on pop and entertainment music. ~ my favourite track: - TRUTH OR DARE - BUTTERFLIES - ON AND ON 3 / 5 ☆

< A.S.O. - A.S.O. > 2023 41:25 trip hop / dream pop /ambient dub ~ it is rarely the case that i know from the first notes that i will like an album. when it does happen, my intuition never fails me. this was also the case here. this album absorbed me from the very beginning. on the one hand, it was no great surprise, as i am a big dream pop enthusiast. on the other hand, i can be quite picky when it comes to this genre. the debut album by a.s.o. surprised me so much that my bar was raised again. in addition to the classic elements of the genre, such as ethereal, mellow melodies, there are unearthly sounds here, like echoes coming to us from outer space. ~ my favourite track: - GO ON - RAIN DOWN - LOVE IN THE DARKNESS - TRUE - SOMEBODY 5 / 5 ☆

< SULLA PELLE - VALENTINA MAGALETTI & JULIAN SARTORIUOS > 2019 30:01 electroacoustic / avant-garde jazz / free improvisation ~ let me start by saying that Valentina's debut album consists of only 4 tracks and after hearing the whole thing I felt a little unsatisfied. it felt like the album didn't get off to a good start and was already coming to an end. there is a lot of improvisation here, which intrigued me to explore the rest of the drummer's discography. apart from that, the melodies are quite energetic and at times hypnotic. ~ my favourite track: - SULLA PELLE 3.5 / 5 ☆

< ISAN LAM PHLOEN - ANGKHANG KHUCHAI & UBON PHATTANA > 1975 44:27 molam / luk thung ~ the continuation of exploring Thai and Laotian traditional music, i found this hidden gem. the album is performed by band Ubon Phattana and Angkhang Khuchai as their lead singer. it became revolutionary in Thai music industry, not only because of the unique way of combining molam and luk thung genres, but also because of the album concept. for the first time, the tracklist created a conceptual unity, unlike albums consisting of collection of singles. it's an album full of energy, rythm and spiritual aura. ~ my favourite tracks: - ISAN LAM PHLOEN - LAM PHLOEN KHOI AI - LAM PHLOEN PHATTAHANA - LAM YAO ALAI LA - KONGPHET KAENNAKHON 4.5 / 5 ☆
