ADVANCED WATERCOLOUR PAINTING class The Advanced watercolour class will be running again in Term 2 from Monday, 6th May 2024. This course will provide students with the opportunity to work on their own projects, while benefitting from advice on colour theory, techniques and problem solving, tailored to each student's project. I am happy to offer drawing tips too, as this seems to be one of the areas many painters struggle with. There will also be an opportunity to join in challenges too. Students must have participated in the Beginner's Watercolour Painting Course or have some other watercolour painting experience to join this course. It is also found in parts of Asia and Australia. It is recommended that you blanch the leaves, then rinse them in cool water before cooking them, as New Zealand spinach contains oxalates. Kotukutuku (Fuchsia excorticata) plants have been in decline since possums were introduced to New Zealand, as possums not only eat the berries (which are edible for humans too), but also strip the plant of leaves. The leaves and stems are edible, but they need careful preparation otherwise can taste quite bitter. THE FINAL NEW GECKO PAINTING underway! Here are some WIP photos of the third and last gecko, the Harlequin gecko (Tukutuku rakiurae) of my new gecko artwork. I was in the grip of all these fantastic details, and got tunnel vision and completely forgot to photograph while I was painting. I have a tendency to do this towards the end of a painting, as I get really excited to see it finished and completely forget to drink my tea, or watch the time (put the dinner in the oven), etc. Does that ever happen to you? EMBARKING ON A NEW ADVENTURE - AN UPDATE Like many artists, COVID did a number on our art businesses and the economic hardship that still follows the COVID pandemic has continued to pressure art businesses like mine. My tutoring business, Brain Gains Tutors, has also taken a massive hit. Happily, this last week, I started a part-time job, which will relieve the financial pressures considerably. The downside is that I will have a lot less painting and embroidery time. Although I am continuing with my 'Beginner's Watercolour' and 'Advanced Watercolour' courses, I will have very little time to paint or create. Very likely, I will cut the number of posts during the week, as with less creating time, I will not have much to share; but there will still be posts. I am trying to be up at 5am to get an hour, or slightly more, to paint before I go to work. In the meantime, please continue to follow my posts. Here are the photos of the grisaille underpainting and the sketches of the second gecko: Southern striped gecko, also called the Stephen's Island gecko, the Cook Strait striped gecko, Stephen's sticky-toed gecko and the striped gecko (Toropuku stephensi). Even though I am still posting the artwork WIPs, I am really excited to release my new @doodlewear.nz 'Kiwi Balancing Act' t-shirt. This amusing illustration, featuring a kiwi playing Jenga, highlights the precarious existence of these birds in New Zealand. There are five kiwi species, with four of them classified as vulnerable or endangered. All five species rely on conservation efforts to secure their survival. According to the Department of Conservation (DOC), there are approximately 70,000 kiwi, yet 20 birds perish each week. Kiwi, known for their long lifespan, ranging from 25 to 50 years, face threats due to their inability to fly, making them susceptible to being preyed upon by dogs, stoats, and ferrets. Additionally, they contend with rats for food resources."
