Nirvana Bootlegs Pt. 128: Outcesticide V: Disintegration / 1998 / Blue Moon / UK. 🇬🇧 Live Nirvana Rating: A / 98% Dreadful Dan Rating: A | 𝘈 – 𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 | 𝘉 – 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 | 𝘊 – 𝘖𝘒 | 𝘋 – 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 | 𝘌 – 𝘞𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 | This was the first NEW title I discovered after becoming acquainted with 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘊𝘋 & 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘺𝘭 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦. Coming across a fifth entry into the Outcesticide series was seriously exciting and the track listing blew my mind! This disc was the first to issue the band’s 1987 session on KAOS Radio - at that point the earliest known recording of the band, and something I never thought I’d hear. It’s a little rough, but still nice and clear and utterly fascinating. The slow, primordial ‘Love Buzz’ is a highlight just for how odd it sounds. This disc also includes the one-off live performance of ‘You Know You’re Right’, which was top of my list of songs I wanted to hear, but only available on the Japanese 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵 and the 𝘈 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘖𝘯𝘦 box set, neither of which I stood a chance of finding. I still remember the thrill of hearing it for the first time, perfectly positioned as the last song of the disc. To this day, I prefer it over the studio recording. The rest of the disc is filled out in discerning fashion with material mostly unavailable on other discs. There’s ‘Love Buzz,’ the final missing track from the 1989 VPRO radio session that had appeared on 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘐𝘐𝘐; the ‘More Than a Feeling’ jam from Reading ‘92 that had been cut from the broadcast; a very tantalising ‘My Best Friend’s Girl’ from the band’s final show; and five unbroadcast songs from the 1992 appearance on MTV’s 120 Minutes including two from the soundcheck. There’s also a very clean stereo version of ‘Live Through This’ taken from a Peel broadcast, with Kurt’s backing vocals coming through prominently. It’s another impressive effort from Blue Moon who continued the trend here of trying to provide fans with quality, rare material at a time when the internet was starting to make the very concept redundant.

Cool honcho J Mascis, fresh-faced from running down birds on the highway, fiddles with the sound desk like a lazy computer kid, while a dedicated scrum of punker throwbacks slam their way to oblivion. Nirvana in contrast are almost serene, they’ve done their penance, Novoselic has shaved his hair while Kobain is sporting a rather fetching Little House On The Prairie dress. The music has changed too. ‘Love Buzz’ transforms the audience into a rotating mass of flesh, while the ever cool ‘School’, doubly appropriate here, with it’s monster blend of kindergarten metal guitar and wilfully regressive lyrics shreds any remaining floorbores. Nirvana al Hampshire College (Amnesty international benefit), in Massachusetts nel 1990: -In tutto 7 band quella sera dovevano suonare per la serata di beneficenza per l'amnistia, il gruppo principale di quella sera erano i Nirvana. Quello stesso giorno, Kurt chiamò la sua ragazza Tracy Marander, per il suo compleanno, e gli disse che non voleva più vivere con lei. Secondo Kurt, lui ivoleva lasciarla "indolore" per lei, ma non sapeva come fare, e le suggerì di rimanere amica. Tornando al concerto, L'ingegnere del suono per il concerto di beneficenza era Jay Mascis (cantante e chitarrista dei Dinosaur Jr.). La scaletta incompleta è stata compilata in base ai feedback pubblici, In tutto la serata durò dalle 21:00 fino alle 2:00 di notte, si presume quindi che i Nirvana abbiano cominciato il loro set verso le 1:00. Kurt si presentò sul parco con un vestitino a fiori con sotto una maglia dei Mudhoney, sapendo che tra il pubblico c'erano persone omosessuali, lesbiche e femministe, indossò il vestito come segno di rispetto verso di loro. Chris Novoselic invece si era rasato completamente i capelli in segno di protesta e frustrazione per la pessima performance dei Nirvana avvenuta il giorno prima, al Pyramid Club. Le prime due canzoni suonare sono state "School" e "Love Buzz" si presume siano state suonate anche "Polly" "Sappy" e " In Bloom" ma al momento non si hanno conferme della set list completa, infatti oltre alle numerose foto pubblicate su internet, di questo concerto però non esistono né registrazioni video, né audio, si vocifera però che il tutto sia stato registrato con una Soundboard, fin'ora mai emersa. Secondo i partecipanti, questo concerto fù di gran lunga migliore rispetto alla sera prima. The two editions really show the duality of the image of Kurt Cobain, this being the sensitive, pained (and somewhat fawning) artist. Conversely, I prefer this version of the back cover with its chunky typography laid over that very punk rock image of Kurt. Both editions feature the same two photos on the interior spread of the sleeve. As I said previously, 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 is a decent release for the time, but doesn’t contain anything especially rare and falls short of being complete, despite an admirable effort.

April 26, 1990 - Pyramid Club, New York, NY, US Nirvana gave what many, including the band, felt was a "mediocre" performance. It didn't help that the show was plagued with sound problems. Many in the audience heckled the band, including Stephen Malkmus (Pavement/Silver Jews) and David Berman (Silver Jews). Iggy Pop was also in attendance (invited by Michael Lavine), though he was one of the few who cheered the band on. Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth were at the show too. The band were so frustrated by the club's poor sound quality and their own playing that they ended the show by destroying their equipment, with Kurt smashing his red Epiphone beyond repair. After the show, Krist was so upset and ashamed of the performance that he shaved all his hair off in the New Jersey motel the band were staying at, as a form of punishment. Krist later said that this show was one of the worst shows Nirvana had ever played. Kurt: "I wasn't frustrated with the audience at all, that has nothing to do with why I was mad. I just felt we were playing really badly and I wanted to k*ll the other members of the band and myself. Afterwards I went into the van, lit a cigarette and said for the 30th time, I'm quitting." On April 26, 1990, NIRVANA held a concert at the Pyramid club in New York, USA 🇺🇸 And also the last photo shoot with Chad Channing as part of NIRVANA took place, it was conducted by photographer Steve Double 📸 NIRVANA was the opening act for two other bands that night. They had sound problems the entire concert. Because of this, the song “Been A Son” was stopped, which they started again. In attendance at the concert were Iggy Pop (who was brought to the concert by photographer Michael Lavine), Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Harry Gersh of Geffen Records. Iggy shouted words of encouragement throughout the concert, even though the band played terribly. Cobain performed in a Stooges t-shirt. At the end of the concert, Kurt broke his red Epiphone, and Novoselic was so disappointed with the band’s performance that he shaved his head after the concert as repentance. He did this at the cheap Jersey City motel where the group was staying. (They had recently started filming a video for “In Bloom,” and some shots showed Krist with hair and some without.) Krist later said that the Pyramid show was one of the worst shows Nirvana had ever had. Sub Pop filmed the concert with a professional camera (still unreleased). Excerpts from this performance can be seen in the video “In Bloom” (Sub Pop version). Craig Montgomery (Nirvana engineer): “Chad was a great guy. I was upset when they kicked him out. Always friendly, always funny... Kurt and Krist were sometimes depressed, but he always tried to cheer them up. They liked Chad as a person. But not as a drummer. I think Chad himself knew that he was not the coolest drummer in the world.
