About a Girl - was first recorded in the studio in December 1988 by Jack Endino at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Washington. It was one of nine songs recorded during the 30-hour, six-day session that ended up on the band's July 1989 debut album, Bleach. As Endino recalled in a 2004 interview with Rob Nash of The Independent, "They just banged it out—they had it all figured out; they were rehearsed. They would do the songs in one or two takes; [Cobain would] get the vocals as one overdub, that would be it, and then on to the next song. So it was a pretty easy record to make. On October 26, 1989, a version of "About a Girl" was recorded by Ted de Bono at Maida Vale Studios in London, England, during Nirvana's first BBC Peel Session. The full session was first broadcast on November 22, 1989. Another version was recorded on November 1, 1989, at Villa 65 in Hilversum, Netherlands for the VPRO radio show, Nozems-a-Gogo. A live version of the song, recorded at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon on February 9, 1990, appeared on the British 12-inch and CD versions of the "Sliver" single in 1991. On November 18, 1993, "About a Girl" was performed as the opening song on the band's MTV Unplugged appearance at Sony Music Studios in New York City. This version of the song featured Pat Smear on the second guitar. About a Girl - was performed for the final time live at Nirvana's last concert, at Terminal Einz in Munich, Germany on March 1, 1994. The studio version of "About a Girl" was re-released on the band's first "best of" compilation, Nirvana, in October 2002. Kurt Cobain wrote 'Floyd The Barber' in the first half of 1987, before its official release on Nirvana's debut album 'Bleach'. At the time, the band didn't yet have the name Nirvana and Dave Grohl wasn't known to Kurt and Krist. The inspiration for the lyrics came from the American TV series 'The Andy Griffith Show'. On April 26, 1990, NIRVANA held a concert at the Pyramid club in New York, USA 🇺🇸 And also the last photo shoot with Chad Channing as part of NIRVANA took place, it was conducted by photographer Steve Double 📸 NIRVANA was the opening act for two other bands that night. They had sound problems the entire concert. Because of this, the song “Been A Son” was stopped, which they started again. In attendance at the concert were Iggy Pop (who was brought to the concert by photographer Michael Lavine), Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, and Harry Gersh of Geffen Records. Iggy shouted words of encouragement throughout the concert, even though the band played terribly. Cobain performed in a Stooges t-shirt. At the end of the concert, Kurt broke his red Epiphone, and Novoselic was so disappointed with the band’s performance that he shaved his head after the concert as repentance. He did this at the cheap Jersey City motel where the group was staying. (They had recently started filming a video for “In Bloom,” and some shots showed Krist with hair and some without.) Krist later said that the Pyramid show was one of the worst shows Nirvana had ever had. Sub Pop filmed the concert with a professional camera (still unreleased). Excerpts from this performance can be seen in the video “In Bloom” (Sub Pop version). Craig Montgomery (Nirvana engineer): “Chad was a great guy. I was upset when they kicked him out. Always friendly, always funny... Kurt and Krist were sometimes depressed, but he always tried to cheer them up. They liked Chad as a person. But not as a drummer. I think Chad himself knew that he was not the coolest drummer in the world. The photos were commissioned by Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop. Also on this day, Nirvana begins filming their first official video, for the song “In Bloom”. The video was shot in just two days in New York. 📝 From the memoirs of Michael Lavine: “Sub Pop bands came to New York and I had to take their photos for the label. Bruce Pavitt (Sub Pop) called me and said, “I have a band. They will become famous.” I answered: “Fine. You say that about all your bands.” I photographed Nirvana in my apartment on Bleecker Street, right across the street from CBGBs. They came to me in their white van and gave me an excellent demo tape recorded by Butch Vig to listen to. Kurt looked sickly and relaxed, but he turned out to be a nice guy. The phrase of the day was the question: “Where is Kurt? Oh, he sleeps in the van.” Eventually, Kurt got enough sleep and showed up. The photo shoot was very casual, we just chatted. They were just kids. I was the same way myself. We took pictures for fun. There was no hair, no makeup, no styling. 🗓️ April 24, 1988 🌎 “The Vogue” (Sub Pop Sunday), Seattle, Washington, USA 🇺🇸 NIRVANA’s second concert in Seattle took place at a small alternative dance club. It mainly played electronic dance music, but sometimes had live concerts, and one Sunday a month was devoted to bands from the Sub Pop label. The club was small, but not nasty. Not many people came: regulars and a handful of local musicians. Dave Foster was on drums. Many who attended the concert say the performance was terrible. 14 songs were played, the first of which was “Love Buzz”. Rumor has it that there is an audio recording from the mixer, which was made at the request of the group. Dawn Anderson (editor of Backlash magazine): “I can’t say I was impressed. I thought Kurt was a little shy, although it was charming, and he wasn’t quite able to play guitar and sing at the same time. There were maybe 20 people at the concert: Tracy Merander, Shirley Carlson (radio DJ) and... was anyone from Sub Pop there? After the concert, Kurt said that his stomach hurt and he felt sick that day. Then the Backlash photographer took a couple of photos (this was NIRVANA’s first photo shoot). Kurt was quite shy. He seemed nice to me, except that he was a little confused from too much attention. Later he felt much more relaxed. I didn’t immediately realize that Kurt was the frontman, although it’s obvious that the main creative energy came from him. Krist looked much more confident. I didn’t talk to their drummer, I don’t even remember his name, just “the guy with the mustache.” When that issue of Backlash went to press, they kicked him out of the band, so at the last minute we cut his image out of the photo. Audio mastering engineer Bob Ludwig was recruited to help make the album sound acceptable to DGC Records. Soon afterward, in April 1993, Albini told the Chicago Tribune that he doubted Geffen would release the album. Years later, Albini said: "I wasn't there when the band was having their discussions with the record label. All I know is ... we made a record, everybody was happy with it. A few weeks later I hear that it's unreleasable and it's all got to be redone." While Albini's remarks in the article drew no reply from Nirvana or Geffen, Newsweek ran a similar article soon afterwards that did. Nirvana wrote a letter to Newsweek denying any pressure to change the album and saying the author had "ridiculed our relationship with our label based on totally erroneous information". The band reprinted the letter in a full-page ad in Billboard. Rosenblatt insisted in a press release that Geffen would release anything Nirvana submitted, and the label founder, David Geffen, made the unusual move of calling Newsweek to complain. Nirvana considered working with the producer Scott Litt and remixing some tracks with Andy Wallace, who had mixed Nevermind. Albini vehemently disagreed, and said the band had agreed not to modify the tracks without his involvement. He initially refused to give the master tapes to Gold Mountain, but relented after a phone call from Novoselic.
