I've been to NY a couple of times but I haven't been to @noguchimuseum till my recent trip. It's now easily one of my favorite places in NY— photos don't do it justice. What a timely visit too as I'm currently working with Japanese raw dyestuff— YAMAMOTO, a subtropical broadleaf evergreen fruit used for making jam, fruit wine, and vinegar and KIHADA, a deciduous tree that grows wild in the mountains of Japan with Nara being one of its biggest production sites dating back to 1300 years ago. I haven't used these raw ingredients before and it has been fun experimenting with them as I work on pieces for @commangoods by @apostrophe_home . Every piece is stunning and I left this museum in awe of their works, their processes, and the stories behind their pieces. Last Fall, the @noguchimuseum opened A Glorious Bewilderment: Marie Menken’s ‘Visual Variations on Noguchi.’ @millennium_film_journal came to review the exhibition, which just published as a multi-page spread in their new Spring 2024 issue. Grahame Weinbren writes, “Having been inspired by the unique, compelling Glorious Bewilderment I regret that by the time you read this essay the exhibition will be closed, the sculptures packed away or re-mounted in new Noguchi Museum shows, the films back in Anthology Film Archives and Filmmakers Coop vaults. I can only hope that after A Glorious Bewilderment: Marie Menken’s Visual Variations on Noguchi, her place in the world of avant-garde cinema is better recognized. Not only was she a major influence on some of the best known filmmakers of her time, but more importantly her liberated, somatic camera and her joyful attitude toward art-making shows us filmmaking not only as an audio- visual phenomena but equally as an embodiment of an artist’s physical responses to beauty and sadness, illumination and darkness. We are pleased to announce illustrator David Huang (@omguac) as the winner of the third annual Open Call for Artist Banners! Jacqueline Qiu (@jacqueline_qiu) and Derek Zheng (@derekzheng_) were selected as runners-up. Huang’s artwork will be installed across the Museum’s outdoor banners from May 22, 2024, until May 2025, coinciding with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. New ceramics publication: Toshiko Takaezu Worlds Within (Yale University Press, 2024) "Toshiko Takaezu (1922–2011) was an American artist whose multidisciplinary work in ceramics, painting, sculpture, weaving, and installation innovatively drew from the natural world, combining expressionist energies with influences from East Asia. The closed ceramic forms for which she is best known are effectively abstract paintings in the round. Her reputation as a ceramic artist, however, has obscured the breadth of her output in other mediums and her role within the larger art movements of the twentieth century." This book provides the first retrospective assessment of Takaezu’s art and life, representing her diverse oeuvre, which spanned six decades, and her hybrid identity as an Asian American woman, artist, and teacher. This ambitious volume features essays exploring Takaezu’s biography, her background as a Hawai‘i-born artist of Okinawan heritage, the relationship between her abstract work and that of her contemporaries, the role of cultural exchange in her art, her impact as an educator, and more.
