UEA estates have kindly cut the meadow this week, to reduce the grass height and give the new seedlings a better chance to establish. However they have left the cuttings (arisings) and it would be great to have some help to rake them up. This will stop them from smothering the new seedlings and returning nutrients to the soil. My other post deleted so ive reuploaded the owl! For weeks I've been searching for the Tawny owls (Strix aluco) at my local park and today I've managed to spot one! Weather wise it was miserable and really dull which meant the photos aren't going to be great but I'm happy with them. I was at the park for hours trying to spot the owls and it seemed I had a good raptor day as I saw two buzzards, kestrel and a couple of sparrowhawks. On my way out of the park I managed to spot this lovely female from about 20m away!! New mascot for the group? We were joined by this stunning fella yesterday when he landed on one of our picnickers - aromia moschata, or musk beetle. This large longhorn beetle is found across East Anglia normally near to wetlands, with the larvae living in the wood of willow trees for up to three years. A huge thank you to all our litter pickers this morning, and to everyone who joined us afterwards to celebrate our ten year anniversary! We enjoyed a tour of the old engine platforms and historic train infrastructure led by Friends of Norwich City Station, and ate far too much cake. We are incredibly lucky that Norwich is so full of people who care about and support our local environment. Had it not been for the hard work of the founding members of our group in 2013 we wouldn’t be enjoying the stunning natural habitat of Train Wood today, which thrives and provides a crucial green space right in our city centre. We are committed to maintaining a presence, encouraging awareness, and striving to protect the woodland for the future, and we couldn’t do this without the help we receive from all our members and volunteers. Now you've probably seen this photo alot by now but we managed to see a Long Eared Owl on Sunday!! We got to the reserve about 5:40pm and saw other photographers waiting so we started waiting then too. As people were starting to give up, they headed towards the carpark and thats when it was spotted! It was around 8:30pm when we saw it for about 3 or so minutes. The photo has a little noise but Instagram has made this way more noisy.
