Male pheasants are really beautiful birds, but maybe a bit overlooked. Cuckooflower (Cardamine pratensis) can be seen in bloom across our wet meadows, like this one at Mile Cross Marsh - a sure-fire sign that spring is here, even if it might not feel like it! So-called because its flowering is said to coincide with the arrival of the first Cuckoos to Britain, it is also known by a variety of other common names, including Lady's Smock, Milkmaids and Mayflower. This weekend I had my first sleepover at @titchwellmanor for mums birthday, it was amazing so dogfriendly and human friendly. I got all my own personalised stuff in the room and met the lovely staff, I can't remember all their names but Sam gave me sausages!! I behaved nicely apparantly at dinner and breakfast and met so many people and dogs. Poor old Gunnera manicata. Now named Gunnera x cryptica and lumped into the Invasive plant' category by DEFRA because of its relationship with G.tinctoria. These plants flank the driveway to @bayfieldantiques and Natural Surroundings and are looking fabulous now. They have been here for years, slowly increasing in size and staying firmly where they have been planted. Well worth having a closer look at the fascinating flowers - at their best now. We will be showcasing other members of the Gunnera family in our gardens soon. The application to Plant Heritage for the National Collection, is going in today. ‘Seal at Horsey, Norfolk’ I finished this little guy today. The reference photo was taken by my husband at the Horsey Gap grey seal colony a few years ago. In winter, it’s a magical sight - the gentle sandy beach with seals as far as you can see, with pups dotted in the dunes. We were well behind the roped off area to keep us and seals safe. This little guy was drawn with coloured pencils on a surface called Pastelmat. It’s A4 sized. Spot the adder (see what I did there?) sunning himself. I thought I’d share a snap of the kit in situ as well to give an idea of just how well he blends into his surroundings at a distance (he is in all 3 photos). Spring just keeps on springing! New life is popping up all over Norfolk. We've had lots of birds nesting on the grounds of Wood Farm, we've seen leverets hiding in grass and just the last week our returning swallows have come back to their nest in the biomass barn. These gorgeous little ducklings and gosling's were on the pond at Great Massingham and I couldn't believe my eyes when for the first time ever, I spotted a little yellow duckling! It might actually be the cutest thing I've ever seen!! Great Massingham is around a 40 minute drive from Wood Farm. It is a picturesque village with a large pond in the centre, a beautiful church and a cosy pub on the green, The Dabbling Duck.
