(Approx 2 minute 20 second read) The term self-defense is frequently used to promote martial arts schools, but do they genuinely offer self-defense, or does it simply label traditional martial arts techniques as a one-size-fits-all solution? . People often discuss self-defense and self-protection as if they’re interchangeable. While there are elements that are similar and overlap, I prefer to use the term ‘self-protection’ over self-defense. Self-protection is proactive, where self-defense is reactive. Traditional karate training, for example, tends to fall into the reactive category. Therefore, it’s important to properly define what we are teaching and talking about. . In the news today, there was a “black-belt self-defense expert” offering advice to people, showing a pictorial of techniques to use when attacked. One woman who commented said that she tried a “self-defense” class, went home to try the (karate) techniques on her husband, but he simply pinned her to the floor. . Those who have been in martial arts for a long time, and maybe those who haven’t, know that it takes a great deal of practice to become proficient in any physical technique. . This is one reason why a differentiation should be made between techniques learned in a martial arts school and those used for self-protection. . Effective self-protection classes should teach a 280lbs man differently than a 110lbs female, yet most martial arts schools teach everyone the same syllabus. A 280lbs man may not worry about being dragged into the back of a van and attacked, while a 110lbs female may not need advice on how to deal with a fight after a soccer match. Different realistic attack scenarios require different responses. . Self-protection training must equip each student with the right tools and techniques that suit their physical and mental makeup. And those tools and techniques certainly shouldn’t begin with typical karate techniques; they need to be relevant to real-world threats and adaptable to diverse situations. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

What a scorcher of a day to do a 2.5hr grading 🥵 but they have smashed it. I'm super proud of them both and a bit gutted i didnt get to watch them. (Approx 1 minute 40 second read) When practitioners perform set kumite, drills, or sparring, they stand facing an opponent. . Why then do some practitioners, when performing applications to kata, wait for an opponent to attack from the side, anticipating blocking an attack? . It makes no sense does it? Yet this is how modern bunkai is performed. . Kenwa Mabuni one of the greatest kata exponents of the time stated; “When interpreting kata, one must not get too caught up in these directions. For example, do not fall into the trap of thinking that just because a kata begins to the left that the opponent is always attacking from the left.” . There is a misconception that the turns, when performing kata, represent where an enemy is attacking from. This is misleading. Mabuni tells us so. . The kata informs you to move TO an angle in relation to the enemy. It is not where they are attacking FROM. . Consider this: In set kumite, drills, or sparring, you face an opponent directly in front of you. In your kata application, instead of turning to face them, as you might have done before, whether by pre-emption or after an attack is initiated, aim to move to an angle suggested by the kata. . For example, many kata initially perform what seems like a left turn. But what you are actually trying to achieve is an angle in relation to your opponent. In other words, you have moved off their attack line. . An effective kata application should move us to a position of dominance with an attacker, which is NOT directly in front of them. You can of course consider moving them off the attack line too. . Any application which gets you to the point in which you are equal with your attacker, is not effective and useful. True effectiveness lies in achieving a dominant position. . Within kata it offers us a vast toolbox of principles and movements, not just a set of pre-programmed blocks against attacks from specific directions. . Students often encounter kata sequences that begin with facing forward, followed by a turn and a block. (Approx 2 minute 5 second read) Think of the massive advantage you’d have if you knew what your opponent was going to do before it happened. You’d be able to react in an instant. . This is, of course, the case in pre-arranged kumite drills. Since you know the attack is coming, you can react accordingly with a ‘block’ or other technique. . Things get very different when you don’t know what’s coming. . When the pioneers of karate created the two-man drills, they did so with an understanding of human anatomy. This knowledge is embedded within the drills and, of course, the kata. . So, what is it that some of the kata are teaching us? . Embedded within the movements of kata are what can be described as ‘predictable responses’ - reflex actions, involuntary and instant unconscious reactions to a stimulus. Predictable actions an opponent will likely take when subjected to that stimulus. . For instance, if you suddenly punched someone in the abdomen, a predictable response would be for them to clinch the area with their hands and fold forward involuntarily. This is a simple example, but it illustrates the principle. . These predictable responses are precisely what many of the movements in kata aim to exploit. These movements help you to recognize your opponent’s most likely position and response after a specific attack. . While countless possibilities exist in a real fight, specific actions significantly increase the chance of a predictable reaction from your opponent. . Have you ever wondered why kata feature so many attacks targeting the body? The truth is, these aren’t always what they seem! . Take for example, strikes seemingly aimed at the midsection. Often, these are preceded by movements (a ‘block’?) designed to elicit a predictable response - the head coming forward perhaps. . The result? What appears as a body blow is actually a strategically placed strike to the head. This principle extends to attacks on other body parts too - using them to manipulate your opponent’s reactions and create openings for a decisive strike or to control the opponent. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 2 minute 15 second read) I used to love sport karate. In my late teens and twenties I just wanted to spar, fight in the dojo, and compete in tournaments. . In those early days, there was a stark contrast to the safety measures and equipment we see today. Those of us who have been practicing for 50 years or more remember a time when there was no such thing as protective gear. Gloves, helmets, and pads were unheard of. When we punched, it wasn’t against pads; it was against each other. . In competitions, we didn’t have the luxury of protective equipment either. Instead of pulling our punches entirely, we aimed for full contact to the body and toned it down slightly for the head, hoping to avoid excessive bloodshed. . The dojo sparring was just as bad, sometimes a lot worse. There were no timed rounds, no breaks, no water. You fought until you dropped. . In our regular training sessions, we didn’t have fancy equipment. We used our karate belts as makeshift jump ropes and folded our karate-gi jackets to use as target pads. We practiced punching against walls to refine our technique, to control the impact of our strikes. And there were no padded floors; we trained on hard concrete. . I didn’t like kata much, probably because I didn’t understand its proper purpose, a lot of it didn’t make sense back then. It wasn’t put in any kind of context for me until much later. Being naturally inquisitive I knew there had to be more. . There was, and is. . Unfortunately today, I have witnessed many black-belts, who think they know it all. They learn and practice; ‘what you see, is what you get’ karate. Nothing in any depth, just punching, blocking, kicking, and maybe a workout. They don’t want to go deeper, they have enough. . Some open their own dojo and continue to teach everything they have been taught, everything their instructor knew. . But of course, it’s not everything. . As time goes on, you are now past middle age, you’re not as athletic as you once were. You cannot perform the high kicks or move quickly with fluidity, you’re slower and cumbersome, perhaps overweight. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(Approx 1 minute 40 second read) Gichin Funakoshi and many other karate pioneers claim that practicing karate can enhance your character. But does karate truly improve your character? . The martial arts often conjure images of disciplined, respectful masters, practitioners, and students. However, does training automatically translate to good character? The answer is a bit more complex. . At their core, the martial arts emphasize cooperation and shared goals, fostering teamwork, communication, and respect - crucial for building strong character. Ideally, this sense of camaraderie should extend beyond the dojo, promoting positive interactions within the larger martial arts world. . Unfortunately, the reality can be quite different. Disagreements between instructors, schools, and practitioners are far from uncommon, contradicting the very values the martial arts aim to instill. There is politics everywhere. I started karate in the early 1970s; it was there then, and it is here now. Nothing seems to have changed. . It’s understandable to be disappointed by this gap between the ideal and the real world. The instructor plays a critical role in shaping character, and sadly there are far too many people with less than wonderful character teaching martial arts. On the other hand, a good teacher embodies the values they preach, leading by example and fostering a supportive environment. Students learn more from watching their instructor treat others with respect than from simply being told to do so. . Simply learning martial arts techniques doesn’t guarantee good character. The martial arts, at their best, can go beyond the physical, but how often does this happen? However, if these lessons aren’t actively taught and reinforced, they won’t magically appear. . Can martial arts improve character? Absolutely, but it’s not automatic. I have seen several instructors who at first seemed good people and good teachers, but when I saw how they actually lived their lives and treated others, I was no longer impressed by their martial knowledge or their character. This distinctiveness extends to language, with Okinawan dialects collectively known as Uchinaaguchi. . Many karate practitioners, myself included, appreciate using the Japanese terminology that’s part of our practice. While most practitioners utilize it primarily for principles, techniques, drills, and kata, some incorporate it (or try to) into everyday language. . Uchinaaguchi, the Okinawan language, presents a steeper learning curve. However, the power and resonance of certain Uchinaaguchi words make them particularly meaningful. . One powerful word that embodies the Okinawan spirit is “Chibariyo” (チバリヨー). . Often translated as “Do your best!” or “Don’t give up!”, Chibariyo carries a deeper meaning. Unlike the Japanese term “Ganbatte” (ガンバッテ), meaning “Do your best”, which emphasizes effort and endurance, Chibariyo resonates more with perseverance and resilience. . Chibariyo encourages effort but goes deeper. It’s a personal push to keep going, finding strength within yourself, not for others’ expectations, but for your own journey. . This subtle difference reflects the historical experiences of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Okinawa faced periods of both autonomy and struggle. Perhaps the term Chibariyo emerged from this context, a word that rallied people during hardship and instilled a spirit of overcoming adversity. . In Okinawan Karate, the indomitable spirit it embodies resonates with the practice of pushing yourself beyond perceived limits, urging students to dig deeper and refine their skills. . Chibariyo is a reminder that within us lies the strength to persevere, to push through obstacles, and ultimately achieve our goals.
