(2 minute read) The door to the dojo swings open with its familiar creak, and a wave of calm washes over you, a place when outside problems just fade away. . Do you still feel that rush of excitement when you step inside? . The answer, for most practitioners I would hope, is a resounding yes. The initial spark of excitement that ignites a martial arts journey may evolve over time, but it rarely extinguishes entirely. . For beginners, that first step into the dojo can be exhilarating and intimidating. It’s a new world, filled with strange terminology, unfamiliar movements, and the humbling realization that there’s so much to learn. . Yet, within this initial nervousness lies an undeniable thrill - the thrill of embarking on a new path, of pushing your physical and mental limits. . As you progress, the excitement changes. It becomes the anticipation of mastering a new technique, the satisfaction of pushing through a grueling workout, or the camaraderie shared with fellow students during drills. . The dojo becomes a testing ground, where weaknesses are exposed and strengths are forged. Each challenge overcome, each grade earned, reignites the fire within, a testament to your dedication. . The excitement also stems from the unique atmosphere of the dojo. It’s a place without judgment, where everyone is there to learn and improve. The respect for instructors and fellow students fosters a sense of family, and a feeling of belonging to something larger than yourself. The shared pursuit of trying to achieve some kind of proficiency creates a bond that transcends age, background, and skill level. . Of course, with experience comes the inevitable moments of frustration, plateaus in progress, or even the occasional injury, and this can dampen the initial excitement. . However, the true mark of a dedicated practitioner is the ability to find new sources of motivation. It becomes a place of refuge, a space to clear your head and find focus. . The focused movements that you practice become a form of meditation, a way to escape the stresses of daily life. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(1 minute 50 second read) Once again, the concept of respect has reared its ugly head. . Someone left a brief two word comment on one of my articles. I won’t delve into the specifics of the conversation or name the individual involved. . However, in response, I asked several questions to gain clarity on their point and to understand if they genuinely believed what they had posted. . Their reply was, “You need to show me some respect.” . Why is there this insistence on demanding respect? . Whenever I write articles or respond to comments, I make an effort to be polite, honest, and genuinely seek to understand the commentator’s perspective or to help them understand mine. I never ask for or demand respect. I don’t flaunt my grade or title because it’s largely irrelevant to the content I produce. . I had no prior acquaintance with this person, and they had no idea who I was. For me, and for most people, respect should be mutual. If simply asking a question to clarify something offends someone’s sensibilities, then what business do they have in the martial arts? . It’s possible that the questions I posed made this person uncomfortable, perhaps even realizing they didn’t know as much as they thought. But isn’t that the essence of learning and growth? True progress comes from questioning, exploring, and being open to new ideas. . Respect in the martial arts isn’t just about bowing to your instructor or following the dojo’s etiquette. It’s about showing respect for oneself, for others, and for the art itself. . I personally believe that respect should be earned through actions and character, not demanded simply because of rank or title. . True respect comes from acknowledging that everyone has something valuable to offer. Being humble and open to learning from others, regardless of their grade or experience, is essential. . While it’s important to respect the traditions and lineage of the martial arts, it’s also essential to be open to evolution and adaptation. Many practitioners have a dogmatic approach to their karate because their teacher told them it was the only right way. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(2 minute 25 second read) ‘Knowing when to walk away is wisdom. Being able to is courage.’ This sentiment reflects a profound truth that extends beyond martial arts into the realm of life’s challenges. . In the martial arts, the mantra of never giving up is deeply ingrained in us all from the beginning of our training. But is it always the right approach? . Persisting in the face of challenges can be beneficial, but it also comes with a cost. Continuously pushing forward without considering when to step back can lead to wasted time and energy. . There’s a fine balance between persistence and stubbornness. Sometimes, the wisest decision is to recognize when your efforts are not yielding the desired results and to step back. . The Japanese proverb “Nana korobi ya oki” (七転び八起き) means “fall down seven times, get up eight.” But it’s not just about getting up; it’s about learning from each fall and using that knowledge to rise stronger. . I’m sure many of you have found yourselves in situations where perseverance seemed futile, and you had to contemplate whether to press on or let go. . Decisions are rarely black and white and it’s essential to weigh the benefits of continuing against the potential gains of exploring other options. . Do you need to quit entirely, or is it just a matter of taking a pause to regain perspective? . In my opinion, many students give up far too easily today. They are led to believe that if it’s not perfect then it’s okay to just give in. That’s a mistake. Sometimes you have to take a step back, to move forward. . Karate, like many endeavors, can have moments that feel overwhelming. The physical demands can be strenuous, mastering techniques takes time, and facing challenges can be discouraging. However, quitting at the first sign of difficulty throws away the valuable lessons learned on the journey. . Persevering through tough moments, you can develop not only physical strength and the many other skills karate has to offer, but also cultivate mental resilience and the grit to push through obstacles. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(1 minute 55 second read) I have been involved in traditional karate for over five decades, respect is a concept I hold dear. It’s the foundation upon which the martial arts are built upon. . The other day, a stranger called me “lad” (he didn’t know me), amongst other things. Apparently he took umbrage with something I wrote in one of my articles, and demanded that I show him respect. . It was a stark reminder that sometimes, the true test of respect lies not in bowing to authority, but in recognizing genuine respect and responding accordingly. . My journey in karate began at 14 years of age. Every step of the way, respect was paramount. We bowed to the dojo, our instructors, and our fellow students, and I still do. . It isn’t mindless obedience; it was a way of acknowledging the shared path we are all on, the dedication required, and the lessons learned. Respect isn’t a trophy to earn, but a continuous practice. . This encounter however, felt like the opposite. Here was someone wielding his supposed martial arts credentials at me as a weapon to demand respect, rather than demonstrating it himself. . True respect isn’t something you can force. It’s earned through humility, through acknowledging another person’s journey, regardless of age or experience. . Perhaps this individual was insecure, needing to inflate his ego with empty boasts. Perhaps he genuinely misunderstood the core principles of the martial arts, however, he told me he was a ‘Judan’ (amongst the many other credentials he had). . Regardless, his actions highlighted a critical lesson: respect is a two-way street. . My years in karate have taught me to choose my battles wisely. In this case, a calm response, was the most respectful approach. It didn’t diminish my own experience or achievements; I simply refused to engage in a pointless display of dominance. . Here’s the truth: a lifetime in martial arts isn’t about proving yourself to strangers. It’s about self-discipline, inner strength, and the constant pursuit of proficiency. . It’s about respecting yourself, respecting your craft, and respecting the journey of others, no matter their age or perceived experience. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(1 minute 55 second read) Should you intervene to protect someone else if they are being attacked? . Witnessing someone being attacked can evoke a strong impulse to intervene and protect the victim. . However, if you do decide to intervene, above all else, the first thing you have to consider is your own safety. . The decision to intervene is not always straightforward and involves quickly assessing the situation. You may not have a lot of time to make a decision, but it’s imperative to determine the severity of the attack and whether the person being targeted is in immediate danger….. if possible, ascertain who the aggressor is. . So don’t not rush in, consider what is actually happening. . If the situation appears life-threatening or the victim is unable to defend themselves, then some form of intervention may be necessary. . Your objective, if you choose to intervene, should be to stop the fight rather than engage in one yourself. . Do you have the ability to get involved without putting yourself at significant risk? If the attacker is armed or the situation seems too dangerous, it may be safer to seek help. . The best approach is to de-escalate the situation without putting yourself or the victim at further risk. . If you’re unsure about intervening physically, seek help from others, in some cases, a group intervention may be safer and more effective than acting alone. . You have to seriously consider your own abilities and limitations. If you’re not trained in the martial arts, self-defense or conflict resolution, attempting to intervene physically could just escalate the situation, make things worse, getting yourself or others seriously hurt. . Do you know everything that’s going on? Do you know everything that’s happened up until you arrived on the scene? Do you know all the context of what you are witnessing if you choose to intervene? - Probably not. . The decision to intervene in any form of attack is a heavy one, a split-second choice that can have lasting consequences. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #DefesaPessoal #KarateShotokanFlorianopolis #KarateWadoryuFlorianopolis #KarateShitoryuFlorianopolis #jiujitsuFlorianopolis #judoFlorianopolis #jiujitsucatarinense #judocatarinense #karatecatrinense #Karategaucho #karateparanaense #judogaucho #jiujitsugaucho #jiujitsuparanaense #judoparanaense #muaythai #jiujitsu #judo #artesmarciaisflorianopolis #shotokan #goshinjutsu #artemarcial #defesapessoal #combatederua #karatejutsu #kmred #kravmaga

(2 minute 10 second read) While there are various techniques and strategies for protecting yourself, one aspect that cannot be overlooked is the role of common sense. . You have to make informed decisions that prioritize safety and well-being. So first and foremost, it’s essential to recognize that self-defense extends beyond physical combat. It encompasses an approach to safety that involves mental preparedness, situational awareness, the ability to make sound judgments in high-pressure situations, and much more. . This means being vigilant and recognizing potential threats before they escalate, as well as knowing when to remove yourself from a dangerous situation. . A comment I received on one of my articles stated; “only when the assailant has a weapon is any life put at risk and valuables ARE things that are worth protecting”. . This narrow view fails to consider the many forms that threats can take. And your life is worth much more than any valuables you may be carrying. . Unarmed assailants can pose a serious risk, and various aspects of self-defense may be necessary to protect yourself from physical harm. . Incredibly, his further comment was: “Old people should know better, and children shouldn’t be there.” . In situations where a child’s safety is at risk, protecting the child takes precedence over any valuables. Self-defense in these cases is about ensuring the safety and well-being of the vulnerable individual, not about protecting material possessions. . I was hoping that he was joking in some way but evidently he was not, and I had to see how far this would go. . He also stated “Strong men and fighters walk away because they can, by choice. Weak men walk away because they have to, with no choice.” . Anyone should understand that walking away from a confrontation is not a sign of weakness, but rather a demonstration of wisdom and self-preservation. . Another misconception is that strength or fighting prowess is the sole determinant of whether you can walk away from a confrontation. (2 minute 2 second read) When reading anything, it’s crucial to approach it from start to finish, right? . Skipping to the end of a book might reveal “who done it,” but you’d miss out on all the best bits in-between. . Recently, a commenter on my article “The best fight is the one you avoid. So don’t start a fight you can’t finish, but if you do, finish it.” - failed to see the importance of viewing the whole message. They believed I was advocating for starting fights, which couldn’t be further from the truth. . Each part of the title of my article emphasizes a crucial element. Lets break it down: . “The best fight is the one you avoid.” - This emphasizes the importance of de-escalation and situational awareness, essential elements of self-defense. . “So don’t start a fight you can’t finish.” - This highlights the need to assess situations carefully and engage only if confident in your ability to defend yourself. . And finally; “But if you do, finish it.” - This acknowledges that sometimes, conflict is unavoidable, and it’s crucial to respond effectively to a threat. Sometimes, preemptive action is necessary. . Did you miss those elements too? . Putting things into context is paramount. . As I pondered this, it reminded me of trying to explain to my students that the notion of grasping the entire message translates perfectly to understanding many of the techniques everyone practices. The full sequence holds the key. . Practitioners often focus solely on the end result, missing the crucial elements at the beginning and middle of the movement. . Many people are fixated on trying to make their technique look the best, and as a result, they fail to see anything else when performing that technique. . It’s important to look at the beginning, the middle, and the end of any technique to truly understand what is going on. . If these crucial elements are ignored, you can miss out on important parts of the movement, such as evasion, angle adjustment, parrying, limb control, or other ways to control your opponent. These sequences form a set of principles for responding comprehensively to a situation. . So what does it all mean? . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

If I had to pick one quality that, over all others, determines one's success in martial arts (and probably everything else too), it's being consistent. It's great to be strong, fast, and flexible. It's great to have a desire to grow and improve, a yearning for knowledge, bravery, integrity, and ingenuity. But none of those things holds a candle to simply demonstrating consistent effort over time. I once had a teacher say to me that it doesn't matter how many years one has been training. It matters how many hours one has been training. In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell popularized the “10,000 hour rule.” This is the idea that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill. So if you spent 8 hours a day training and made it your full-time job, you could put in 10,000 hours in about 1.5 years. That's based on about 260 work days in the year, so you'd still get weekends off! Do I have any takers? That seems extreme, but most students function at the other extreme without realizing it. If training 8 hours per day seems like overkill, training two hours per week – I think that's probably average for most – is almost so little as to not count at all. If we're training for mastery, don't fool yourself that 2 hours per week, 104 hours each year, will get you there. (That would take about 96 years, by the way.) This is why practicing outside of class is so important. Come to class when it rains, when you're tired, when you're stressed. Come to class every class. Don't let yourself get away with excuses. Your teacher is tired too. Your teacher is stressed too. But your teacher is your teacher because none of those things stopped him when he stood where you are. Like brushing your teeth, your attendance should be a habit that happens without thinking about it. Also like brushing your teeth, you should have a really good reason if you skip it. #karate #karatedo #karatejutsu #karatekata #traditionalMA #dojolife #dojo #keiko #martialartstraining #martialarts #martialartslife

(1 minute 30 second read) If you’re like most people, you probably hope you’ll never face a self-defense situation. But being prepared is key. . Self-defense is a critical skill, but it’s important to understand it’s not about winning a fight. It’s about neutralizing a threat and escaping safely. . Those that keep reminding me that MMA is the ultimate self-defense system, it’s important to remember that MMA is a sport - a competitive environment with rules and referees. Real-world self-defense scenarios are unpredictable, often involving multiple attackers, weapons or surprise attacks. . Self-defense is a measured response to an immediate threat. It’s about stopping the attacker and escaping the situation unharmed. The use of force is justified only as long as the threat persists. Once the threat is gone, any further action becomes retaliation, not self-defense. . Effective self-defense training goes beyond physical techniques. It emphasizes “your early options”, which are just as crucial as physical responses. . MMA fighters possess impressive combat skills, their training prioritizes defeating an opponent, not necessarily de-escalating or escaping a dangerous situation. . Remember, self-defense is about stopping the threat, not winning a fight. If surrendering valuables like money or jewelry prevents further harm, do so. Your safety and that of others, comes first. . Learning self-defense is a responsible choice. It empowers you to protect yourself effectively, not just “fight back” blindly. . Always remember, the objective of self-defense is simply to halt the threat. Once the threat dissipates, there’s no need for further confrontation. It’s crucial to identify the aggressor clearly and assess whether the situation warrants physical defense or can be resolved through other means. . There’s no denying the impressive athleticism and combat prowess of MMA fighters. The sport demands a mastery of various disciplines, incorporating techniques like boxing, wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu, making practitioners incredibly well-rounded combatants. . Witnessing the technical brilliance and strategic maneuvering in the octagon can be truly awe-inspiring. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..

(1 minute 55 second read) It’s a familiar sight in any karate dojo: students you see today might be gone tomorrow. Life throws curveballs, and sometimes karate falls off the priority list. . There are so many adults that regret quitting the martial arts when they are young. I can almost guarantee that anyone who quits training at a brown belt level will one day regret it, or at least they talk about how “I used to do karate.” . But why do people quit in the first place? . The reasons are many. The initial excitement might fade, especially for those who see karate as a casual activity. Trying to balance training with work, school, or a teenager’s ever-changing social life can be a constant struggle. . Frustration with progress or a feeling of inadequacy can lead some to lose faith in themselves and walk away. Injuries or illnesses can disrupt training and make it difficult to pick things back up after recovery. . Especially at key milestones like brown or black belt, students might find themselves questioning the long climb to even higher ranks. . For teenagers in particular, the social and physical changes of adolescence can shift priorities, making karate less appealing compared to newfound interests. . Regardless of the reason, the way people quit often follows a similar pattern. Some simply vanishing without a word - it leaves instructors and dojo friends in the dark. . Last-minute communication via text or email might be convenient, but it’s impersonal and doesn’t offer closure. . So, how can both students considering leaving and instructors facing departures navigate the situation effectively? . Students, talk to your instructor! Share your challenges and explore solutions together. Maybe a temporary break or a modified training schedule can help you stay engaged. . If you’ve ultimately decided to leave, don’t be embarrassed to inform your instructor in person. Thank them for their time and let them know you might return if circumstances change. . ⬇️ CONTINUED…..
