How many of you know Mr. Craig Haney? If you do, you know how wonderful he is. If you don’t, please let me tell you how I met him. I went into @orvisbirmingham last month and began talking to him. No one really walks around with a sticker that says “I love fly fishing.” So when a conversation leads there it opens up a world to so much more. I’m a strong believer that we meet people in our lives for a reason. Like ripples in the water everything we do has an impact that grows and spreads around us. What Mr. Craig may not realize is he has probably had a more profound effect on the people he has met than he will ever know. I still smile because even as he was walking me out the door we both realized, that even generations apart, our love for fishing started with Catawba worms. He helped me pick out flies that day for some of the biggest fishing adventures I’ve been on to date…or “misadventures” as we are now calling them. His decision to pick a certain color and throw it in with the rest will always stay with me. Even the gentleman behind me in line said, “Craig sold you on the Damsel I see.” Yesterday I returned home to this book in my mailbox and I cannot wait to start it. I treasure books and I treasure stories. I treasure people that leave lasting impressions in my life and I’m so thankful for all of them. If you need anything from Orvis please go see him. What you may have not realized is I now consider you my family and I have three little girls that will also love to hear your stories. Camp 2 Day 2 - First day on the river with Palmer Home for Children and Still Creek Ranch! But first, Orvis (Birmingham, AL) surprised us with a big check for $5200 from their recent Great Giveback Days! Thank you Orvis Bham! Perfect timing as we were about to hit the river with our new rods and reels donated to each camper by Orvis! What a difference a week makes! Last week it was chilly on the water, today highs were in the 90s! Still it was a beautiful day and the kids were led by awesome guides from The Lodge at Palisades Creek who taught them all about fly fishing. One of the girls commented, being on the river is a peaceful escape from the drama she’s endured. A boy said his guide told him, in fly fishing you can only focus on the present. We saw bald eagles, beautiful snow capped mountains, canyons and lots of trout. A full day on the river will do something to your soul. Later the kids had small groups where they talked about “Hope”. After an amazing dinner, Mr. Steve shared his story and talked about “fear”. We threw our fears in the bonfire. A common theme was fear of failure and abandonment. They wrote their names on the benches. The kids love getting to know one another from across children’s homes. They are either playing together or sharing with one another. This is so much more than a fishing trip, they are beginning to see. We dressed up as ourselves🤣 proudly sporting our new @orvis hats. Seriously, we went as anglers! I have to say, I didn’t grow up in a family that fished much. Don introduced me to the outdoors and got me hooked (pun intended). I learned to #flyfish and troll and use a spinning rod. It became something we did as a couple and then as a family. If there was water nearby, we were usually on it. There were times I’d hang back and give Don time alone with the boys, individually or all of them at once. There were times we went in different boats with different boys. There were times when the boys went without us, as brothers and friends...and there have been countless hours, before, during, and after raising boys, that it’s just been the two of us in a boat. I love the sport! I love the scene. I love the quiet. I love the eruption of excitement with a fish on. I love the fish stories after a day or an evening on the water... and most of all, I love that Don has passed on his love of woods and water to all of us and we share it as a family! We are Simons. Texts from our boy this week have been awesome. This was his work week! He was on the water every day, as well as in training learning more. Today was one for the books! I was able to hook up on a beautiful redeye in a very small creek. I cast several times in the same spot and tried several different floats/actions to get a fish’s attention. Then I went back to the basics and remembered all you need to do is present the Sams one bug, and it will do all the work. I cast the bug across the small creek a little up stream in a still area. With no action given and around 10 seconds later the bug disappeared.... the fight was on and it was a good one!! I was even sporting my #remedyprovisions redeye shirt. Freshwater Land Trust is a Birmingham-based nonprofit that conserves, connects, and cares for lands and waters in Central Alabama, creating dynamic green spaces for future generations.
