Letters to Fear “Far From Home” What would it be like driving the longest road in the world, the Pan-American Highway? After watching a few YouTube videos, I picked up a used truck, downloaded the route, took my little savings, and set out on the adventure. I drove through mountains and deserts, cities and towns, marveling at the diverse landscapes and cultures along the way. In South America, Bolivia imagined the last stretch of the road to Ushuaia. I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment building up inside. People would be waiting with congratulations, and the book deal messages would fill my inbox. As I reached the final mile marker, there was nothing. No crowds, no banners, no cheering crowds. Just the sign, “Ushuaia,” on the highway leading to town. Pass through the village to a desolate but beautiful landscape stretching out into the distance. Had I missed something? Was there a mistake? I looked around, hoping to find some hidden celebration or secret reward, but there was none. I fell into the water and started to drown, which woke me out of my imagination. I wrote in my journal, “The journey itself is the real prize. Auf der andere Seite ging es dann flach weiter, immer noch im Canyon. Überall verschiedene blühende Kakteen. Auch im Berghang sieht man viele Kakteen, sogar einige JoshuahTree Bäume. Zwei Hängebrücken verbinden die zwei Ufer, drüben könnteman sogar auf dem Berg hochkletter. Wir kehren zu unserem Platz zurück, wo uns im saftigen Wiese grasende Bergziegen erwarten... Con un mejor clima nos movimos al area de acampada para nuestra ultima noche en @fincasacmoc después de pasar todo un día entre los paseos de los rios Tzac tzac y Sachicháj. Queremos destacar el excelente servicio y calidad en el restaurante de la finca. Estando en un lugar tan remoto es interesante poder degustar carne de cordero y otros platos en poco tiempo después de ordenarlo y con un sabor fenomenal. Tocó así pues despedirnos de ese lugar para emprender el camino hacia otro destino no sin antes dejar nuestra huella en Sacmoc en compañía del cálido personal que nos atendió. La ruta de salida nos permitió entonces gozar de algunas postales impresionantes que a nuestra llegada bajo la lluvia no pudimos ver. What’s the point of the lights on the back? The yellow light is what’s known as a chase light. This is used during poor visibility (such as dusty or snowy conditions) so the vehicle behind you can see you easier. These are very popular in the desert racing world. Next to that is a combo (spot and flood) white light that I use anytime I need to illuminate behind the truck. This comes in handy when I’m backing up in a dark area. I also use this when we get to a campsite and need to illuminate the area. These also have a red backlight function that I use as marker lights while I’m driving. I chose to put them underneath so they don’t interfere with my tent, and they are more protected than if they were on the side.
