First Steps with Annika: Restarting former OTTB Broodmares for Ranch Work, Barrels & Western Dressage On today’s show, we have Annika Greaney-Stanger @greaney_equestrian who has two OTTBs that she is retraining for the 2024 RRP Makeover in some varied disciplines including Ranch Work, Barrels, Trail and maybe some Western Dressage. Marteas Dressurdebüt am CD Buchs | GA04/60 Am 7. März fand für mich der Saisonauftakt statt, aber gelaufen wie geplant ist wieder einmal nichts. Eigentlich stand eine entspannte Runde mit Djakirah auf dem Plan, die sich jedoch blöd verletzte und somit ausfiel. Die naheliegende Schlussfolgerung wäre gewesen Ria mitzunehmen, doch gab sie mir zwei Wochen vor der Prüfung kein solides Gefühl in der Dressurarbeit. Martea hingegen hat mir seit letztem Herbst die Hölle heiss gemacht, verlangte von mir sämtliche Gelassenheit, Durchhaltungsvermögen und Cleverness ab und präsentierte sich reitlicherlich nicht gerade von einer sonderlich guten Seite. Doch die Geduld zahlte sich aus und während Ria mit dem kommenden Fellwechsel zu kämpfen hat, wurde die hübsche Blüterstute wieder mehr und mehr zu dem leichtfüssigen Engel, der sie eigentlich ist. Die wahnwitzige Idee war geboren, Martea mit ans Turnier zu nehmen. Die Linienführung konnte sie, wenn auch wir keine Verstärkungen zeigen würdek und auch der Halt über den Winter nicht wirklich geübt worden war. Als Trainingszweck wäre das aber eine super Sache und so fiel zwei Tage vor Turnier die Entscheidung, tatsächlich sie mitzunehmen. Mir war klar, dass nicht alles nach Drehbuch laufen würden, doch es lief erschreckend viel sehr gut und sie konnte viele, ihrer anfänglichen Unsicherheiten mit Beginn der Arbeit hinter sich lassen. Einzig der seitlich stehende Tisch für die Siegerehrung war ihr nicht geheuer. Da wurde das Programm in der daran vorbeiführenden Galopparbeit kreativ angepasst. Nach diesen beiden, kurzen Ruckler war sie aber sofort wieder bei mir und überzeugte mich mit einer willigen Rittigkeit und dem Willen zu Gefallen. Mouse was getting antsy on the cross tied and kept moving. I reached my arm out to pet her to try to get her to not be so antsy. I look over with the vet coming back, a sad look on her face. My brain went to the worse case scenario. “Katalin, mouse is deaf. Her sight isn’t amazing ether but she can still see enough of where she can take you far. 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠... . 📍 Goldenleaf Showing Stable, Northwestern Jorvik I checked up on Oliver a little bit today, he seemed to be pretty chill and getting used to his new home. We put him in a pasture by himself to see how he is, and he seems to be good by himself for right now. After the first couple of times I checked on him, I decided to try and go into his pasture and see what he would do. He seemed a little confused at first, then I out my hand out. He flinched then bucked a few times, but then he just noticed that I was trying to pet him. Do I have something he could digest? I asked myself. I dug around in my pockets, then I felt something. It was a peppermint! I played around with it so the wrapper would make noises, and he immediately came to me. “Good boy,” I said. I slowly put my hand out to him to pet him. He flinched at first, then he was fine after a second attempt. “Good boy,” I said. After that, I went out of his pasture. He followed me for a couple steps, then he just stopped, then walked off. ʜᴀs ᴀ sᴜᴘʀɪsᴇ... • Today I picked up Dancer after looking at him on Wednesday! The vet said he was healthy but to just be patient as he is very sensitive. He was bolting around and he seemed energetic when I came over. People helped me get him into the trailer. It took a couple attempts, but soon he gave in and let us guide him. I found out that he likes carrots and apples though. It took him a bit to settle in, but then he was alright. First of all, I want you to meet one of the most handsome boy of all. This is Mulder, a Smoky black Kladruber stud that my father gifted me alongside SK As Toxic As Snake Kiss aka Crowley a marwari stud when they were just yearlings, they grew up together and became quite the stunners. Mulder is one of the only horses in the barn that knows how to drive, and when I saw @jorvikhorsecentre 's costume trail ride I knew I had to go! I choosed a Death and her parece skeleton horse as a costume, but I added a touch of color! Also, the puppies and duckie decided to tag along. First, we have Apollo with his pumpkin costume; then, Ymir, with her bat/vampire outfit; Bandit with his little crown; and Everest, dressed as a classic detective. We drove all the way around the barn and had so much fun! The dogs were barking at every spooky decoration. Someone asked for a pic and added some effects and my! my! I was unbelievably humbled and proud to come away with co-champions with the fantastic Jane Moore and her thoroughbred Subbie. To achieve what we all did in 100 days (or less) was phenomenal. Darlene was soft, quiet, steady and brave. To be honest, I was shaking like a leaf most of the time, but she cowgirled up and we got it done. We came away with first in the Ranch Versatility, 4th in the Reining, 3rd in the Cow Work and 1st in the Freestyle. I’ll elaborate more on the events in the coming days, but I’m just blown away at this outcome. Thank you to everyone from the bottom of my heart for your love, support, guidance and belief. Our last dinner together as a fambalam. I’m beyond heartbroken my support crew won’t be with me. My videographers, cheer squad, grooms and cuddlers. It feels wrong my family that have been my biggest fans are being left behind whilst I truck on with Darlene to Cowgirls Gathering. Revisiting some basics whilst being “grounded” - it’s amazing how we can easily gloss over basics when we have a loftier goal in mind. D and I having some chill time before we make the big trip on Sunday for @cowgirlsgathering . We haven’t had as a productive week as I would have liked, with a few hiccups that have thrown my plans out the window. My costume for my freestyle got stuck in NSW, D is sore from a trimming mishap, I’m batch cooking eleventythousand meals so @jamesflinn89 has one less thing to worry about for the week whilst trying to manage two kids and a still unfamiliar cattle station, and my grandfather passed away so I’m leaving early to be able to get to his funeral. It’s all happening here but the Race To Ranch girls and my support network is cheering me on, and I know we can’t quit at the 11th hour. It going to be an epic week but I’m so excited. The Journey. I have loved having you all along with me on this journey. I came into this challenge with no agenda, no idea what I was in for, no career promotion aspirations or fame seeking. What I got, however, was a whole lot of learning. Highs, lows, troubles and wins that I was able to share with each of you - and in turn, almost like a journal, I was able to better understand it myself. This is not the end, no, it is only the beginning. Where to from here? I feel like I have been a bridge, from Darlene’s old life to her uncapped horizon. It is time for her to spread her wings high - she always knew how to fly, I just gave her the map. Where else could you preview a horse that you wanted to own, for 100 days? Who knew a racehorse, in 100 days could: ⁃ live in the desert with no “grass” to be found ⁃ Live amongst emus, snakes, sheep, goats and pigs ⁃ Live barefoot and unrugged ⁃ Be four years old and already have self confidence ⁃ Drag a log ⁃ Rope ⁃ Traverse all environments ⁃ Be curious and fun ⁃ Handle big days ⁃ Pony other horses off and be ponied ⁃ Muster cattle I’m bloody proud of the hard work I have put in and I know my time and love will be not for nothing. I know Darlene’s future is fuller and brighter than what I can give her right now and I know her next adventure is waiting. I’m manifesting her best person is waiting in the wings for her and is just hanging out for “the nudge”.
