Flipped one of the humbucker magnets for the middle position out-of-phase "Greeny mod" in my Chibson. In spite of what anyone might say about these china-made knockoffs, it's been a pretty fun modification platform. Ive swapped every single component out for quality parts & electronics, and leveled & dressed the frets. Když jsem před pár lety začal experimentovat se snímači, šel jsem na to od lesa: mám jich přeci dost v šuplíku, smontuju si je sám. Mým prvním projektem byla výměna magnetu Alnico 2 v humbuckeru Burstbucker 3 za Alnico 5 původně z modelu Gibson 498 T. Jinými slovy – nemělo to koule, tak jsem přiložil silnější magnet. 💪 Výsledek byl ohromující. Najednou to mělo brutální tah, všechno to zpívalo a svět byl znovu barevný. 🌈 A protože jsem magnet vložil do snímače obráceně, podařilo se mi v prostřední poloze vytvořit Svatý grál všech pravověrných bluesmanů – tzv. out-of-phase sound, tedy situaci, kdy jsou signály obou snímačů rozfázované a nabízejí ten návykový nazální zvuk, typický pro Garyho Moorea nebo Petera Greena (najdete ho zhusta na Moorově albu Blues for Greeny). Seděl jsem tam hodiny a hrál. A nevěděl jsem, jestli si mám víc užívat ten haluzově vytvořený legendární zvuk, nebo jestli se mám věnovat tomu, jaký vliv má na zvuk typ magnetu, způsob navíjení drátu, síla výstupního signálu, nebo autentičnost přístupu jednotlivých výrobců. 🤷♂️ Zkrátka: propadl jsem se do králičí nory 🐰, kterou všichni muzikanti znají, abych se z ní vynořil zhruba o 2 roky později s množstvím zásadních poznatků nejen o zákonitostech stavby snímačů, ale hlavně o sobě a vlastní zvukové identitě. Ale to je zase jiný příběh. New GAS PAFoid Legend set: The Green set! Probably the hardest task so far, the target was to create a set that captures the sound of the Greeny LP (previously owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore, now by Kirk Hammett). The biggest challenge here was to design the neck pickup. The original one had been pretty much modified during a repair procedure in the 60's, as explored by experts that inspected the guitar in the past (as Phil Harris and J. Dantzig): A multi wire replaced the original single braided wire, the coils seems to be probably rewound and the magnet bar was placed back in a reversed polarity position. The result is a very round sound, as clearly showed in demo videos (as the one by Phil Harris) and also in the recordings of the legendary Gary Moore. On the contrary, the bridge pickup is very open, almost twangy, but still in the PAF territory. After 4 prototypes for the neck pickup, we ended up with a set with two completely different pickups. Neck model features Heavy PVA wire, a multicore hook up wire for a very fat, round sound, Rdc is at 8k range, resonance at 5,6kHz. The magnet bar is reversed placed (with respect to the bridge pickup) for the typical OOP sound, but due to the wire, the pickup can be also wired in phase. Bridge model features Plain enamel wire, for a more twangy, open sound. Rdc is at the 8,5k range, resonance at 6 kHz. 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special at Chicago Music Exchange. AND... the pickups were accidentally wound out of phase from the factory! Listen to the tone become more nasal and thinner and stranger as I dial the balance between the pickups so that they phase cancel certain frequencies. This is a pretty rare factory error that Hubert Sumlin’s les paul (howlin wolf) & Peter Green’s les paul (fleetwood mac) also had.
