Flipped one of the humbucker magnets for the middle position out-of-phase "Greeny mod" in my Chibson. In spite of what anyone might say about these china-made knockoffs, it's been a pretty fun modification platform. REPOST • @philipsnyderunlimited UPDATE Since the “Holy Diver” Les Paul replica turned out so well, I decided that it deserved upgraded pickups and electronics. The PUPs that came in the guitar are generic Chinese hot ceramic magnet rail-style humbuckers and quite surprisingly not awful. They are not microphonic and work just fine, but the bridge PUP is somewhat harsh on the top end and the neck PUP is a bit “woofy” for my taste. I’m not a fan of hot ceramic magnet pickups in general, but the prototype had DiMarzio X2N pickups which utilized them and details matter when building a replica of anything (within reason). As replacements I chose GFS Power Rails from Guitar Fetish over the X2Ns because I prefer the EQ of the GFS version to that of the DiMarzios, which have a strongly pronounced bottom end response that I’m not particularly fond of. The GFS versions look identical to the X2Ns but have a more balanced EQ in my opinion, so the visual remains correct but the tone is more to my preference. I also upgraded the harness to GFS 500K audio (volume) and linear (tone) taper pots with Sprague Orange Drop capacitors and cloth wiring. The factory toggle switch and jack are fine, so they remain at least until they show signs of needing replacement. Here are the first photos I have taken of my special order Chibson replica of Vivian Campbell’s 1977 Les Paul Deluxe as it was during the “Holy Diver” period. As a platform for upgrading, it is really good and properly constructed with a “sandwich” mahogany body with maple cap and a maple neck with rosewood fretboard per Gibson Norlin-era specs. First, I will be doing some light fret work and upgrading the tuners to Gotoh and the bridge and tailpiece with Gibson parts. The pickups and wiring harness will stay for now as the parts I want from Guitar Fetish are currently on backorder. I will also replace the fake brass nut and knobs with real brass. I have a Deluxe truss rod cover and Dunlop strap locks to install, and I may scrape the binding just to clean the edges up a bit more than they are. I will also do a little light polishing on the matte finish just to give it that worn in look. “Less Paul” for @cuffshisjeans. This one came back in for a round of upgrades. The previous owner had (poorly) installed a pair of Epiphone pickups and NOS tone caps. I gutted it and installed a pair of Seymour Duncan pickups and all fresh electronics. I used a quad of @bareknucklepickupsofficial 550K pots, Switchcraft jack and carried over the NOS caps for extra mojo. Additionally, I swapped out the knockoff Gibson tuners for a set of genuine Gibson tuners. This involved opening up the holes a bit, along with the holes for the pots. Lastly, it got a fret level, crown and polish. It was no easy task, but it turned out great! Thanks for always trusting me with your guitars Kenny, enjoy!
