St. Ethelwold's House, Abingdon-on-Thames 📍 I stumbled upon this place last year when wandering around Abingdon. I was unsure whether I was allowed to enter at first, but then I shortly realised it is open to the public. I loved it so much that I showed my friend the place this weekend when she came to visit Oxfordshire. It is completely free to enter and walk around. Just make sure to pop a donation in the box as a thank you for the upkeep 🌼🌸 The garden is a place for people to find peace and tranquillity. I could imagine sitting here and reading a book in the sun, taking in the fresh air around me. The couple of times I've visited, it has been quiet and calming, even on weekends. It is a real hidden gem in the town. They also have rooms in which you can stay the night, all at reasonable prices. I've not personally stayed here myself, but the rooms look lovely on their website. They have single rooms, doubles, and family rooms 🛏 For mindfulness, meditation, and yoga, they have lots of regular events that you can be part of. I've actually been looking at joining the yoga class myself. I returned to Oxford last Friday for an unexpected appointment with Merton College’s archivist to see what he believes is the entrance to the old Merton anchorhold. Last December, I worked on an essay looking at the interplay between anchoritism and exhumation. I stumbled across the essay topic without necessarily intending to— it was for a medieval literature module I challenged myself to try out, which, being an early modernist grounded more in the literature and history of a time that existed quite consciously in the aftermath of that period, certainly did challenge me on many of my former preconceptions. Anchoritism embodies the peculiarity and unfamiliarity of medieval devotional culture: essentially practiced by— more often than not— women who petitioned to take part in a theatrically macabre enclosure ceremony and remain confined in a pokey cell/grave attached to a church, it meditates on questions of spectrality, absence and presence, contradictorily seesawing between a desire for erasure and a peculiar kind of hyper-prominence (key anchoritic guides mention how popular they were as semi-secular conduits for the local, churchgoing community). While researching it I discovered that Merton used to have an anchorhold— the rise of the university largely muscled out the eremitic profession in Oxford due to the competition of piety the colleges provoked, but the Merton anchorite technically pre-existed the college, inherited when it was established in 1264, already attached to the original chapel the college mushroomed out of. College records indicate she was around in the early decades of the college’s history, but appears to have disappeared, wiped clean from the slate of history like so many anchorites, when the chapel was rebuilt and she, presumably, died. She is one of the many irrecoverable ghosts of Oxford’s history, an echo in a larger tapestry of myth. I loved seeing where she might have lived all those years ago— just opposite the library I frequented. Reading Waugh’s nostalgic and introspective Brideshead Revisited while I was there was perfect— like the anchorhold, it is a text haunted by the echoes of a history that is now out of reach 🩵

Offering a cozy yet traditional college atmosphere, the dining hall has hosted students since the 1520s. Situated behind the High Table is a door, which was built in order to give the principal easy access to the hall from their lodgings. Directly above hangs a brazen nose, or brass nose, the college’s namesake. Two oriel windows are situated on either side of the hall, one of which contains the arms of England and France, in order to commemorate the visit of Louis XVIII in 1808. HOW ABOUT BEING IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME!! So we decided to go on a walk. The compromise was he will take nice pictures with me with the bluebells (without complaining) and he can play in the sand after that for as long as he wanted. I was aiming at shotover country park.. what could possibly go wrong! For a starter, we had to get lost (as usual) despite my constant reminder to myself to stick to the marked paths. After going round and round in circles, we finally reached the “sandpit”, only to find that, the little rain last night had changed the landscape. The gullies were full of muddy water and the sand pit was not sandy at all 😅 Ay looked at me blandly and asked “where is the sandpit you were talking about”. we last came here last year (last picture on the carousel) when it was so sandy, that it was getting in our eyes. I was not prepared for the water , so we didn’t even have wellies to splash. Ay was so unimpressed! To top it, the ice cream truck was gone when we returned to the car park.. ahhhhh..
