Capesthorne Hall, home to the ancestors of the Bromley-Davenports since the Domesday times. We are lucky to be able to see any of Capesthorne Hall still standing after a catastrophic fire in 1861, destroying almost all of the main house. BRONZE AGE AXE Our history in my hands. Kingdom of East Anglia. Yesterday I visited the Longshed in Woodbridge to see the progress of the reconstruction of the Anglo-Saxon ship based on the Mound 1 find at Sutton Hoo. Whilst there I helped set up a talk that was going on about material and textile working during the AS period and had a fascinating chat with metal detector/archaeologist and Sutton Hoo society member Gilbert Burroughes, who also kindly brought some of the incredible artefacts he has found, including... A Bronze Age axe found in Chediston, Suffolk And a woodworking axe found in Cookley, Suffolk near Halesworth. Among a number of other finds, including some incredible Roman pottery. Truly fascinating and pleasant conversation and I was windblown to learn that he'd actually met Basil Brown when he (Gilbert) was 15 that that Basil had influenced him to get into historical digs and finds. .... I'll never get tired of holding more and more artefacts from East Anglia’s long history, even from before it was known as East Anglia. The former GPO Archer Telephone Exchange with its quirky single storey wavy roofs. Built in 1956, its wavy roofs were originally designed as a whimsical compliment to its neighbour the Sneinton Market Avenues, which at the time was a successful wholesale market. BT still operates in a small section of the building, the remainder was converted into student accommodation in 2003. Lincoln Cathedral. Once the tallest building in the world!! The original Norman cathedral at Lincoln was largely destroyed during the earthquake of 1185. Over the following centuries it was rebuilt in the gothic style, namely Early English Gothic and Decorated Gothic. The cathedral became the world’s tallest building in 1311 when the massive central tower and its crowning spire was completed. With the spire the cathedral rose to a height of 525ft, which saw the cathedral surpass the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the previous tallest building in the world. The cathedral held this title of the world’s tallest building until the spire collapsed during a storm in 1548. This was during the reign of King Edward VI, the boy king and son of Henry VIII. Under Edward, England properly became a Protestant nation. Many contemporaries regarded the storm that took the spire down as a sign from God of his anger at the religious change in England. Edward’s Protestant regime was ultimately the reason why the spire was not rebuilt. During the reign of the boy king, the wealth of the churches and cathedrals in England was acquired by the state, most notably the dissolution of the chantries. With the dissolution of the chantries and the final blow to the system of purgatorial prayers, the incentive for wealthy individuals to give money rebuilding churches dissipated. Night Shots Test . I recently did a comparison between the quality of a 15 years old DSLR and a fairly new Smart Phone, to confirm if the phone takes much better night photos than a very old camera. . I could not imagine that a phone can take superior shots than a purpose built camera, and espcially when you read from some that a full frame camera is superior to a Micro Four thirds. . My test explained that there is pretty much no difference between them, and the reason you might get nice looking shots from a phone, is because of the computational power in the phone and the software it uses to make the JPEGs. . A sublime, delicate and diminutive Tudor style miniature portrait depicting Edward VI (1537-1553) in the Manner of Hans Holbein the Younger. Created c.1680 or possibly earlier. The young auburn haired King wears an embellished red coat, an bejewelled wide brimmed court bonnet with a white plume. Oil on copper or velum. Set within a gilt metal mount with pierced spiral cresting. Edward VI, born in 1537, was the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. Ascending to the throne of England at just nine years old, Edward’s reign was marked by significant religious reforms. Despite his youth, he displayed a keen intellect and a commitment to England. He felt one of his greatest achievements was the creation of the Book of Common Prayer. Sadly, his reign was cut short by illness, and he died at the age of 15, leaving a legacy of religious change that would shape England for years to come. It's been brought to our attention that various Cllrs at DDC deny DDC owns the land that the proposed McDonald's drive-thru would be situated on. This runs contrary to what is stated on the Land Registry. And according to McDonald's own planning application, they, the McDonald's, and the developer Citycourt Developments Ltd, do not own the land in question. The land owner's address on the planning application is given as "Council Offices, White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield Dover CT16 3PJ", i.e. DDC's office address. Three questions arise from this address being given: 1) Why is the owner of the land's name redacted on this application ? 2) If the land does not belong to DDC, why is a 3rd party owner giving DDC's offices address as the registered address of the owners of the land? 3) DDC, if they indeed have sold the land, must have a record of who they sold it to and when, so who is that new owner? HISTORY OF HAUGHMOND ABBEY Over the course of the 12th century, a small religious community at Haughmond was transformed into a great Augustinian monastery, where a community of canons lived with their servants. These priest-monks lived apart from ordinary society, but they also gave food and shelter to the sick and poor, and supported a local nunnery. Wealthy benefactors helped Haughmond become one of the finest medieval abbeys in Shropshire.
