Le Gouffre de Padirac, where nature’s artistry creates an underground world of wonder. One of the largest chasms in Europe. The enormous 75 meter chasm, 33 meters wide, was often referred to by the locals as the devil's hole. This enormous sink hole leads into a cave system, created by millennia of subterranean underground water erosion which has carved out spectacular caverns in the limestone, full of enormous stalactites and stalagmites deep under the ground. You can explore the caves on flat bottomedboats along a subterranean river of pristine turquoise water. #gouffredepadirac #padiracchasm #dordogne #lot #occitanie #francevacations #limestone #chasm #sinkhole #devilshole #asadventure #outdoorphotography #naturephotography #nature #natgeotravel #natgeo #nature #travel #natgeoyourshot #travelphotography #photography #naturephotography #travelgram #photooftheday #yourshotphotographer #beautifuldestinations #landscapephotography #lonelyplanet #instatravel #naturelovers

#padirac #gouffredepadirac #padiracchasm what an amazing trip in the center of the earth

~Gouffre de Padirac (the Padirac chasm)~ Weather forecast promised 40 degrees Celsius, so we decided to hide ourselves literally under the earth. We drove to Padirac to explore Padirac chasm that serves as a doorway to the underworld - the 40 km of cave galleries of which only two km are open for visitors. Within couple of minutes of climbing down the 75 meters deep access shaft (there are elevators as well) we were relieved by cool and moist air. From the bottom of the chasm there was a stairway that lead into the caves. The stairs were slippery because of water drops dripping from enormous stalactites hanging from the ceilings of the caves. We had to be careful not to slip and fall. On some places we had to watch for our heads not to bump on million years old rocks. As we descended the stairs we could feel cold drops on the overheated skin. Slowly though, water drops were not as invigorating anymore because the temperature inside was 13 degrees. We cooled down as well as pulsating feeling in our heads went away. At 103 meters below the surface, just as we reached the bottom, a river stretched away and a pathways alongside the river lead us to a boat station. We took a 500 meter boat ride which felt endless on the meandering river. Our boat “captain” was informative enough to my question on the water level. He told that during rainy season the sight closed if the water rose to 50-60 centimeters. Upon arrival at the other end we were stunned by galleries that opened spectacular views to lakes, gigantic stalactites and stalagmites, and countless stairs going up and down, all under the ground, an no sky to be seen. By the way the stalactites and stalagmites in the Gouffre de Padirac gain up to three centimeters in a century. Imagine how much time it took to those mineral formations to grow! We spent only two hours in the “underworld”, but the impressions of this experience, it seems like, will last for a while. As my youngest can’t stop talking about the “hole in the ground”. We came out wearing our pullovers to 40 degrees outside. Only memories of 13 degrees helped overcome the heat on the way to a parking lot.

With the lockdown being lifted in Europe, I know we all are still sceptical if we could start travelling like before. Of course, things aren’t the same. Best way I think to start travelling would be to explore nearby places by opting day trips. That way you don’t have to stay at a place that you don’t know if it’s safe. This can make your staycation safe and stress-free. . Last week, when my friend finally bought a car, I jumped with joy as we can visit all the off-beat places that we’ve put on hold due to bad transport connectivity. First thing on our list being- ‘Gouffre de Padirac’ . The Padirac caves are one of the largest chasms in Europe. The boat ride, 103 meters below the ground level guiding us along a subterranean river of pristine turquoise water is truly fascinating. The pictures you see do no justice to what we’ve experienced there. All I can say now is for you to explore this natural wonder by yourself- Wow factor guaranteed! 🤩 . #postcovidtravel #gouffredepadirac #dordognevalley #dordognetourisme #tourismfrançais #padiracchasm #yourshotphotographer #voyagedExplore

Discovered in 1889, the spectacular Gouffre de Padirac features some of France’s spangliest underground caverns. The cave’s navigable river, 103m below ground level, is reached through a 75m-deep, 33m-wide chasm. Boat pilots ferry visitors along 1km of subterranean waterways, visiting a series of glorious floodlit caverns, including the soaring Salle de Grand Dôme and the Lac des Grands Gours, a 27m-wide subterranean lake. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #gouffredepadirac #padiracchasm #lot #france #chasm #cave #quercy #legend #naturephotography #nature #devil #underground #speleology #photooftheday #pictureoftheday #travel #instatravel #followme #like4like #saintmartin #roadtrip #adventure #water #tunnels #science #extraordinary #iphone #nofilter

Gouffre de Padirac (Padirac Chasm), Padirac, South of France. This was not on our itinerary and only stumbled upon it doing a google search on what attractions were nearby. From the top to down where I'm standing is 75m. Unfortunately the rest of the journey down to the subterranean river, which you travel along by boat, are a photography no go zone. :( Apparently there is a 40km subterranean system in this area and only 2km of it are open to the public.
