Early morning rock dance. A couple of approaches to surfing here. You could do the long, slippery walk over the cobble stones, which are actually more like basketball or beachball size. Then you have to pick the right entry spot, and time it right, for a short paddle to the peak. Or, you could go to the base of the point, step off sand into the water, and have a long paddle out to the peak, aided by a conveyor belt like current. So this guy Gabriel contacted me yesterday, saying he wanted a photo session at Sandbarnesia, not a common request. I took him down there, showed him where to jump off the urchin encrusted ledge, and where to negotiate the keyhole. Having never been there before, made it to the lineup and caught 7 or 8 waves over an hour and a half. Pretty good considering the shifty nature of the lineup, and he was totally alone out there. Gabriel in my opinion is far more adventurous than the average visitor here. This was interesting. The locals call this reef Bajo Benicio, mainly it's a fishing spot. Usually one can see some pretty big barrels out here on big swells at low tide. There was a crew discussing tow in options out here a number of years ago, but nothing ever came of it, and to my knowledge no one has surfed it yet. This was an afternoon during the Coral swell, with this set hitting at high tide. Not just a normal high tide, but a +13ft astronomical high tide. Coral swell part 7, end of the reef, minus tide, astronomical spring tide. The swell event coinciding with a tidal event was interesting. The x in image 6 marks my low tide perch. Long, hot rock scrable to get there, short window before the tide reclaims it. This spot is only accessible a few times each year. The swell should start dropping tomorrow, and l have to take care of some errands that will keep me away from the coast. Every year in early February we seem to have a good swell that falls on my birthday, which my friends and l refer to as the Brady Swell. My youngest daughter Coral was born on the peak of a particularly strong swell. We are just a few days from her 15th birthday, which is a big deal for a young girl in Panamá. Sandbarnesia overview. The keyhole entrance is outside the upper right of the image. Where the wave is breaking, upper right, is a wide area of beachbreak like surf. Quality can vary from 100 yard long firing rights, to shifty closeouts, and everything in between. Upper left of the imsge is a sand bottom point with long, hollow lefts that look somewhat like lndonesia, hence my name for the spot: Sandbarnesia. The spot is most easily accessed by boat, or a roasting hot, hour long hike. You have to go to find out if it is firing, or bunk, which is a big factor in the lack of crowds. Another factor that keeps the crowds down, is once in the lineup there is no channel, and if the surf is solid, count on cleanup sets. I have gone many times with board or camera, only to sit and watch it for 30 minutes, then leave without touching said board or camera. I have gone on other occasions where it looked good from the beach, but once in the lineup, l could not find a wave. On many of those days, when l'm about to throw in the towel, it suddenly turns on for 60 to 90 minutes, then just as suddenly turns off.
