Another great Handgun Fundamentals class today! Travis was already proficient with this accuracy, but wanted to work on his trigger mechanics, as well as practicing with responding to malfunctions. I use dummy rounds mixed in with live rounds to simulate having to clear a jam or malfunction while shooting semi-automatic. We had a great Women’s Basic Handgun class today! Abrionna and Ria wanted to get up to speed on the basics of firearm ownership and shooting. In the classroom portion we covered the basics of safety as well as shooting techniques like proper stance, grip, and aim. We then headed over to the range for the shooting portion. I utilize tools like Training Sights to show proper sight alignment, and dummy rounds, or ‘Snap Caps’, to allow shooters to show how anticipating recoil causes unnecessary movement in the gun prior to trigger pull, or “lurching” as I call it. This usually causes the shooter to hit low on the target. Snap caps also allow me to train the student how to clear jams that can occur when using semiautomatic handguns. This was Megan’s first time at the range! After the classroom portion of class, we took it to @_bullseyeindoorrange_ in Lawrenceville and worked on the principles of safety and the fundamentals of stance, grip, and aim. Today we headed up to @_bullseyeindoorrange_ for a new service we are offering to students who have not purchased their first firearm yet. Our new ‘Gun Tailor’ service involves meeting a student at the range for a shooting session and helping them pick out which gun works best for them. Choosing the right firearm is all up to each individual’s needs and abilities. It can be an intimidating and overwhelming decision process if you are unfamiliar with the different manufacturers and the differences in the various models of guns that they offer. Many first time gun owners end up regretting the gun they purchased because they either didn’t spend enough time trying out the gun first, or they simply listened to the advice of a friend or salesman who is not focused on their specific needs. This can be an expensive mistake due to the fact you cannot simply return a gun after purchasing it. You must sell it back to them used. Just like a car, it loses a large portion of its value as soon as you leave the store with it. Because this student has already shot some of our student use guns for free, we are able cross those guns off the list of gun models that she needs to rent at the range to try out. We were able to narrow down what she’s looking for and what she needs, and rented the @sigsauerinc P365 XL, and the @smithandwessoninc Equalizer. She was able to get the feel of each gun, and the pros and cons of each. At the end of our session, she was set on the Equalizer 9mm! There’s no pressure to buy this gun on the day you rent it; it just allows you to know what you want for when you’re ready to purchase. The Gun Tailor sessions are $50 for a 90 minute session. The range fee is $12 and students will also be required to pay for their range ammo, and $10 for each gun rented. We can typically narrow it down to 1-3 rental guns. We have 2-3 Peach State student use guns you can try out for free. We will also go over basic fundamentals pertaining to safety, grip, and aim during this session too. Today we had a great class with a return customer! Ms. Deborah has taken multiple Peach State classes including Women’s Handgun intro and intermediate, as well as the Firearms Cleaning & Maintenance class. She went from being terrified of shooting a gun to being confident and proficient not only in her basic fundamentals, but also more intermediate skills like responding to malfunctions while shooting. Today she returned for our new @uscca Emergency First Aid Fundamentals class! We practiced performing a patient assessment, traumatic emergencies, medical and environmental emergencies, CPR, and creating your own first aid kit. We had a great @uscca Intermediate Pistol class today! I am so proud of Ms. Deborah! Months ago she approached me to take lessons even though she was terrified of guns, loud noises, and suffers from arthritis; which makes it difficult for her to grip a handgun completely correct. She came in for the intro class and worked on her grip, stance, and aim. However the biggest accomplishment was getting her over the fear of actually going to the range and shooting a gun. She did amazing and overcame so much emotionally. Today she came back for the intermediate class and we continued with the basics, as well as integrating in important fundamentals like loading and unloading, as well as responding to malfunctions. This is something very few people practice, yet it’s one of the most important skills you might ever need in the event of a real life self-defense scenario involving a firearm. She went from being scared touch the gun, to being able to recognize a malfunction and work through it both physically and emotionally, in order to get the gun back running again. She did a great job of working through her weaknesses and overcoming the unknown. While Ms. Deborah has improvement to do on these fundamentals, I can’t wait to see her confidence and skills excel through continuing training! Thanks once again for the amazing staff at @_bullseyeindoorrange_ for providing a safe and friendly environment.
