SOTD: Perry Ellis Cologne for Men, 1985 There's so much going on here, and it's all so fast and so loud that it's impossible to pick out all the Notes. But when under the spell of its formidable sillage, you wouldn't be interested in nitpicking Notes, you'd be too busy wanting to surrender to the experience. What it is primarily is a Leathery Chypre swathed in Oakmoss. But it's equally a Floral Chypre with dollops of Carnation and Rose and Jasmine. And just as much a Fougére with Amber, Tonka Bean and Lavendar. But with the kind of pissy, musky, almost fecal Civet that's in here, it's not too far fetched to suggest it's an Animalic Chypre. Perry Ellis Cologne for Men might not be the biggest compliment-getter, but that's only because those who have smelled it in the air would usually be too dumbstruck as to what bewitching scent it was that hit them. In a fairytale world where the word 'Intense' was reliably justified for Fragrances, PEC would be amongst the very first to earn that reputation. It projects for hours and lasts for days. I'm not one to toot vintage horns and I like to give credit to modern fragrances where it is due, but stuff like this makes it too difficult to not admit that the Golden Era of Perfume is behind us. PE Cologne isn't the most beautiful of the Vintage Hall of Famers, nor is it genuinely unique given the context of that time, neither is it particularly groundbreaking as a composition. It's just a perfume that rings true to the freedoms and the glory and the mood of its time. It's a perfume that echoes in it all the divine and the wicked tenets of masculinity. No, it's far from the greatest perfumes ever created, but compared to the vacuous offerings of some of the largest perfume manufacturers in the world today that cost twice, thrice or often ten times as much.. PE Cologne for Men is what I would deem a bona fide Holy Grail of a Perfume. Back in the 80s, this was just some solid Cologne. SOTD: Perry Ellis Cologne for Men (1985). A bit rosier than your standard men's 80s aromatic leather, Perry Ellis for Men (the original "cologne for men") boasts a kitchen sink notes breakdown but feels not so much busy as it is full-bodied. Nothing smells wilted or overripe, even in this aged bottle in my possession, and it just....feels good. It feels good like a backrub, a fine Cuban cigar, a scotch on the rocks, Natalie Cole's voice, singing "Our Love is here to Stay." I tip my hat to this one. It's certainly worthy of discovery for oakmoss and carnation fiends and for those who want a lovely Derby-adjacent or Patou PH-adjacent scent (I meant it!), its hum is similar, even if its melody is different. It's one that oddly gets overlooked in favor of the unicorns because it's maybe...Perry Ellis?
