Yes, this was a photo taken with a timer, but Lucy and I legitimately like to hang out on the balcony together and chit-chat while looking out at the yard. By coincidence, looking over this photo, it’s a combination of pieces from wonderful small businesses that are closing up shop, or have already closed: • Chartreuse mohair “grandpa” sweater - from @tuesdayofcalifornia. (Fortunately their pre-loved site is still up.) • Brown “mocha” mini skirt: @sotelaco which is wrapping up their final collection before they close. (But, still a bunch that’s available either ready-to-wear or made-to-order for now.) • Batik silk (cream with a dark brown marble-like print) top from @pamutapparel which fortunately IS around, but was picked up from delightful local shop @hellovelouria - which I had an excellent experience visiting and shopping at, and weeks later found out that they are closing too! 😭 (But also, many great things still available.) There are so many independent businesses who pay living wages to their staff and makers, source materials ethically, and produce beautiful products without exploitation (like She!n or similar), and offer much higher quality clothing that’s ACTUALLY scaled for and tested on fat bodies (looking at you, most mainstream brands.) But, it’s a struggle to economically survive in a world that’s biased towards the “rights” of megacorporations, massive profits for shareholders, and cutting costs by sacrificing quality of their products or for their workers. 𝐀𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞 by @nbitorperfumes captivated me from the instant I sampled it at @perfumerybarcelona It lingered on my skin and filled my senses, thoroughly ensnaring my thoughts. Thomas warned me that it would be incredibly intense before spraying it on my skin. And I was truly blown away! How is it that the perfume manages to be so dark and intense, stirring turbulent emotions, yet remains irresistibly addictive and exquisitely elegant? I had to mature before I could truly wear it... And here it is, standing proudly in my collection alongside Nuevalos, another fragrance from the line, capturing my heart at the very first sniff. 𝐀𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞, crafted by the talented Miguel Matos, draws inspiration from one of Goya's "Black Paintings," specifically known as "The Witches' Sabbath". The scent takes me immediately to the ambiance this painting exudes. Damp, raw, dark earth of a freshly dug grave and organic smoke floating together and creating a very intense, kind of "black emotion". After the densest darkness I've ever encountered in a fragrance calms down, it unfolds a whole range of magnetic facets that are impossible to detach from. Smoke, metallic notes and earth blend beautifully with the sweetness of dried fruits, rose, and a hint of cinnamon. The truffle and coffee enhance the impression of the intensity of this blend. In a moment, all this darkness grows into a beautiful, very sensual, and elegant ambery patchouli drydown with a perfect dose of hyrax. Such an experience! It's definitely not a versatile scent that I could easily wear. For me, this is a perfect example of the unlimited creativity in the niche perfumery, which is so often forgotten these days. Let’s talk about dupes Some dupes are absolutely incredible and so close to the original its ridiculous Some are rubbish and last an hour or just not at all I know there are some people that make collections out of dupes. There are pros and cons to dupes. Pros being that if you can’t afford the original then these are perfect if you want to smell different but it does come at a price. In my opinion as the dupes are a fraction of the price you end uo being caught in a web What do I mean by that? Well say for example you can’t afford an original and say to yourself I can get 3/4 dupes for that price and eventually you do. Your collection grows and now you have a collection of stuff you dont really reach for I love a dupe but not to replace the original. As it’s own fragrance. My dupes don’t last anywhere near as long as the originals so theyre scents I wear when Im popping to the shops or in my gym bag. However recently I purchased turathi blue and that will be a staple in my spring/sunmer rotation. What are your thoughts on dupes?
