BREED SPOTLIGHT: Miniature Schnauzer 🐾 Miniature Schnauzers are square-bodied dogs with wiry coats. Their rectangular head is adorned with bushy eyebrows, a walrus-like mustache and a luxuriant beard. Most Miniature Schnauzers have salt-and-pepper coats, but some are solid black and others are black and silver. Miniature Schnauzers are hardy, alert, spunky little dogs. They can be feisty and may put on a show of scrappiness when confronted by dogs they do not know. Their playfulness makes them ideal for families with children. They are also known for being obedient, quick to learn and devoted to their human packs. Miniature Schnauzers are adaptable. They can be just as happy living in a city apartment getting a couple of walks each day as they can be on a country estate with lots of room to run. Because the breed is somewhat fearless around other dogs, it is important to introduce a Miniature Schnauzer to other dogs while still a puppy. Because they do not shed, these dogs are ideal for people who are allergic to other breeds. However, they need to be groomed regularly; frequent brushing, hair and nail trimming, and periodic clipping and stripping are necessary. It's important for cats to receive regular vaccinations and health checks, so here are our top 5 tips for keeping your cat calm and making the visits as low stress as possible. 🔹Teach your cat to love the carrier. Put comfortable bedding inside and leave it in a space where your cat likes to hang out. BREED SPOTLIGHT: English Springer Spaniel 🐾 The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized dog, and is sturdy for their size with quite a bit of bone and large paws. They have the classic "spaniel" look: large and expressive eyes, a moderate muzzle with a definite stop to the forehead, and long-hanging ears. English Springer Spaniels have a medium-length coat, which can be flat or wavy. Extra hair is on the ear fringes, feathering on the rear of all four legs, and on the chest. The colours most commonly seen are liver and white or black and white, but tricolored and ticking are variations. 🐶 Energetic and lively dogs; they have a fair amount of intelligence and are reasonably easy to train. Most spaniels have a retrieving urge, and the English Springer Spaniel is no exception. This urge can lead to chewing problems if the dog is left alone for long periods of time. Socialise them with other dogs and people right from the start, even though most are fairly outgoing and friendly. Most English Springer Spaniels do not do well with kennels or sedentary lifestyles. Digging can be a problem with bored dogs. Grooming can be a bit of a chore with an English Springer Spaniel, though this dog requires less work than their smaller cousins. Most owners clip their English Springer Spaniels and trim around the legs, feet and ears. Daily brushing out of the feathers and long coat is important to prevent matting. FAQ - Why does my dog sploot and should it be a concern? 🤔 We often get asked if it is normal, and is it ok if my dog sploots? This is when a dog lies on their belly with their hindlimbs extended out behind them. They can also partially sploot when the knees are still bent. This is different to a dog lying in a frog legged position (another issue for discussion later). There can be many reasons why a dog will sploot. You might see your dog sploot after a walk. This might be to place their belly on a cold floor to help regulate temperature and dissipate heat. Dog's will also sploot to stretch and relax. This position extends the hips and lower spine and stretches the hip flexors. Parvovirus is a deadly disease that primarily attacks the lining of the small intestine, bone marrow and in some cases can cause heart inflammation. The virus is mostly transmitted via direct contact with an infected dog, but because it is so highly contagious it can also spread to your dog indirectly, through contact with contaminated surfaces, public paths and walkways, food and water bowls, clothing, shoes or dog leads. Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) describes a variety of conditions that affect the bladder and urethra of cats. Cats with FLUTD most often show signs that include: 🐱 Straining to urinate 🐱 Urinating small amounts 🐱 Frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate 🐱 Crying out while urinating 🐱 Excessive licking of the genital area 🐱 Urinating outside the litter box 🐱 Blood in the urine The most serious problem associated with urinary function is when a cat's urethra becomes partly or totally blocked. These cats strain to urinate and produce little or no urine. If you have a young male cat that suddenly seems quiet - feel their belly. Stuffed toys are cute and boy do our pets love them! 🐶💕 The things that are usually most attractive to dogs are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Follow our tips to keep your dog safe when playing with stuffed toys: 🧸 Make sure your teddy is placed in a safe place and doesn't have any small parts like plastic ears or noses that your pet may swallow. Avoid or alter any toys that aren't "dog-proof" by removing ribbons, strings, eyes or other parts that could be chewed off and ingested. 🧸 Discard toys when they start to break into pieces or are torn. 🧸 Check labels on stuffed toys to see that they are labelled as safe for children under three years of age and that they don't contain any dangerous fillings. Problem fillings include nutshells and polystyrene beads, but even "safe" stuffings aren't truly digestible. 🧸 Remember that soft toys are not indestructible, but some are sturdier than others. Oreo was in recently in for a suspected snake bite (most likely a whip snake). 🐍 She actually is a mostly indoor cat with an outdoor enclosure, after previously being bitten by a snake. This is a timely reminder that cats are not free from risk in enclosures. Oreo had a close call, but thankfully she is recovering well at home with her family. ❤️ If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, or if you find your dog with a dead snake, you should get your pet into the car immediately and head straight to our vet clinic or your nearest emergency vet hospital. It's vital that we admit your pet for observation, as signs can take time and can result in sudden collapse and death.
