This weekโs featured SkyWatch resident is the Canada Goose! The big, black-necked Canada Goose is a familiar and widespread bird of fields and parks. These geese migrate in the thousands north to Canada to breed and south for the winter each year, filling the sky with long v-formations. However, an increase in lawns and maintained grassy areas has enticed these birds to stay in suburban areas year-round, often causing conflict with their new human neighbors. Canada Geese are fiercely family- and flock-oriented birds, which is often misinterpreted as these birds being aggressive and pests. Most of the Canada Geese you can see around our Swan Pond are flightless after developing a condition known as Angel Wing. When young geese eat nutritionally-depleted foods โ like bread or crackers fed to them by humans โ while they are still developing, the bones at the end of their wings grow crooked and outward. Thankfully, these geese now have protection and a proper diet with us, but a simple way to protect their wild relatives from this condition is to not feed your neighborhood geese. If a neighbor insists on feeding the geese, encourage them to switch to food that resembles their natural diet like leafy greens and birdseed. Remember, bread is not for birds! HUTTONโS SHEARWATER Thanks to Encounter Kaikoura for acting as a handover point for rescued Huttonโs shearwaters ๐ Healthy shearwaters are released at sea by @albatrossencounterkaikoura - thanks to skippers Tracy Cooper and Gazza Melville. Injured shearwaters, or more frequently those in poor body condition from malnutrition, are handed into care for rehabilitation to enable recovery for release. This morning Tracy dropped off a shearwater which crash landed in a backyard. This brings the total to 41 shearwaters admitted into care by Sabrina in the past 4 weeks. This shearwater is a very late fledgling, being emaciated at 225g (vs >360g) and covered in down. In recent years we have seen delayed fledging due to decreased prey availability. Starvation is impacting breeding onset in adults, and chick development. Additionally, some pairs may also re-lay after a failed breeding attempt, resulting in late fledglings. This young bird is too downy, which indicates fledging before a chick is ready, forced by hunger to make the journey to sea ๐ โ Thank you to Encounter Foundation for a $20,000 grant towards the first $51,500 Portacom wildlife treatment unit. If we thought last weekend was bad, yesterday was Hell. This is the first of 3 gulls that we took in. Jane went and collected him from Rhyl, as Finder was unable to transport, and took him to Anne. Bert is booked in with the Vet for tomorrow morning. He has an old pellet wound under his wing as well as two wounds to either side of his head. There is a ยฃ600 reward offered for any information leading to the arrest/prosecution of the person/persons responsible. If you know something and are not coming forward you are in essence agreeing with the senseless and constant cruelty to these birds. As always. *Dragonfly rescue* This female broad-bodied chaser must have been disturbed while emerging from the pond and I found her flapping in the long grass with one of her wings on the wonk. The first hour or so after metamorphosis is a perilous time for dragonflies as they need to dry their wings fully to enable them to fly. I put my hand out and she climbed aboard, then I transferred her to the cherry tree where she had a good dry and seemed to sort her wings out. YAY. Swami rubbed his head for 5 minutes and the little guy was so knocked out that when I drove him to the Wildlife Rehabber, I kept checking to make sure he didnโt pass onto the next dimension. Did you know we can re-nest baby birds? Nests can fall out of trees from strong winds or even trimming trees. If this happens and the birds are unharmed our goal is always to re-nest! These Red-shouldered Hawks fell out of their tree along with their nest last week. Our rehabbers were quick to set up a new nest for them after they received a quick checkup. Their nest was placed in an old laundry basket and tied to a tree near where they were found. Today, I am helping out an awesome Animal Control Officer with 5 adult domestic buns that needed to be confiscated, along with 4 newborn-today domestic neonates. Their mom is so stressed right now that she isnโt caring for them probably (yet). They are here at Blossom's Bunnies Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue, to be properly cared for and the situation assessed on a day-by-day status, with the hopes that mom will calm down enough to focus her attention on her babies so that she can, once again, care for them herself. We are excited to share the news that female polar bears Cranbeary and Kova have been introduced ๐ฅฐ They met each other nose-to-nose with no barriers on the morning of Friday, April 26th, and things went very smoothly. They are getting to know each other and adjusting to their new life together! As this introductory period continues, the zoo animal team will make care adjustments as needed. We cannot provide schedules or guarantees on when they will be seen together as we are focusing on their safety and comfort by giving them the habitat together as well as den access if they need alone time. This is Tweety! Our first Grey seal of the '23 season last year. ๐ He came in to us at 6.75kg and around a month premature. We had never cared for a Grey Seal this young and vulnerable before, we knew that the odds at this age and size were that he was unlikely to survive. However with extreme dedication from our expert seal team Tweety began flourishing by hitting milestone after milestone! ๐ After being on his own for 3 weeks we had another seal arrive who was a similar size so we paired them. We named her Maggie. The pair hit it off immediately and were inseparable. Day after day Maggie would bring out the 'seal' in Tweety as he picked up on her behaviours. During this time we gave them daily swimming lessons and lots of different types of fish in hopes they would start feeding for themselves. After a couple of days he was fully self feeding and independent! ๐ช At 23kg we moved him outside alongside friends Tigger, Peppa, Eddy, Eugene and Po. They thrived together and gained lots of weight and tweety had become the wild seal we hoped for him to be. January this year we released Tweety with his five friends and tweety weighed in at 37.4kg, 30.65 kilo heavier than his admission weight! The seal team couldn't be prouder of wee Tweety considering everything he has overcome. We wish him all the happiness and health in his new wild life!
