Die junge Arbeitsgruppe rund um den Arbeitsgruppenleiter Jun.-Prof. Dr. Markus Suta beschäftigt sich mit dem Forschungsgebiet der "Anorganischen Photoaktiven Materialien". Dabei untersucht die Gruppe "so ziemlich alles an anorganischen Feststoffen, die bunt leuchten können, von solchen mit Übergangsmetallen, über denen, die auf sog. exzitonischer Luminsezenz basieren, bis hin zum Spezialthema, den f-Elementen". Angewendet werden können die Ergebnisse in alternativen LEDs, potenziellen antimikrobiellen Lichtquellen, bis hin zu optischen Sensoren und Quanteninformationsspeichern. Bisher kann die Gruppe ihr experimentelles Know-How im ModISC-Forschungsverbund einbringen, bei welchem sie assoziertes Mitglied sind. The group is investigating "pretty much everything about inorganic solids that can glow colorfully, from those with transition metals, to those based on so-called excitonic luminescence, to the special topic, f-elements." The results can be applied in alternative LEDs, potential antimicrobial light sources, to optical sensors and quantum information storage devices. So far, the group has been able to contribute their experimental know-how to the ModISC research network, of which they are an associate member. Students can learn here in a 1:1 supervision, what potential fundamental research has for industrial application and that solid state chemistry is not only baking bricks, but can also be luminous!
