I’ve photographed many WTF moments but a woman on a sidewalk outside a nail salon burning fake and very crisp 10K bills in a red tin can, that’s a first. 🤣🤣🤣🤔 The printing in 10K bills was discontinued in 1945 and put out of circulation in 1969. Apparently they weren’t used often enough so the federal government decided to discontinue them along with $500, $1000, and $5000 dollar bills. Who knew! 🤷🏽♂️🤣 I asked her for one but sadly she said no. A “surfer town” built on the land of the Kumeyaay also referred to as the Kumiai in Mexico. Their territory extended from present day Oceanside over the Laguna Mountains, across the arid Colorado Desert, to the shores of Lake Cahuilla and down into Baja California. Pawnbroking first started in ancient China by Buddhist monks some 3,000 years ago to give loans to farmers and small businesses. It was through the “pawn” industry that Colonizer and mass murderer Queen Isabella of Spain, financed the Christopher Columbus' expedition. She pawned her royal jewels to finance the trip. Eventually, the pawn industry made its way to America in the early 18th century. This multibillion dollar industry has now graduated to include predatory payday lenders, check cashers, and rent-to-own stores among others who set up shop in low-income communities and charge excessive fees and grant loans with terms that are often impossible to meet. Dressing up is a tradition that dates back to the late 1800’s when Colonel Merriwether Lewis Clark Jr. helped found the race that was inspired by England's Epsom Derby, which had formal dress codes for spectators, including hats. However, it wasn’t really until the 1960’e when extravagant hats became associated with the Derby. By then, social fashion norms had loosened up and with the rise of television, it inspired women to one-up each other on the swag after seeing it on TV. It became an opportunity to just stand out. My never ending quest to find the perfect bowl of BIRRIA. An Uber driver recently recommended this truck in Compton. BTW, some Uber drivers are a great resource for foodies. He said get there early cause Sunday mornings are busy. So I grabbed my newspaper this morning and off I went. I’ve been to this very area 100 times b4 and not sure how I missed it. The again, I don’t go to Compton at 8am on a Sunday so there’s that. They provide beef and goat options and yes it got busy fast. I got there a lil after 8am and there was a line soon after. I went with the goat in consome. Small plates served with hot sauce and a couple of tortillas and the usual fixings. Very rich and flavorful but not gamey or overbearing with spices. The meat, super tender. As I was wrapping up, about a dozen local bikers stopped by and returning customers is always a good sign. Either that or they have good taste in food. 😉🤣 Birrieria Barajas located on Compton Blvd and Butler near Eddie’s Liquor Market. Family owned and operated with a lot of pride in what they serve and u can taste it in every bite. They also have tacos and all that a taco truck serves but go with the small bowl, you won’t regret it. There is evidence of variations of tamales eaten among pre-columbian peoples dating back 10,000 years. Popularized by the Aztecs and Mayans, this incredible dish as we know it today, is derived from the word "tamal" from the Aztec Nahuatl language. The Mayans called Tamales "uah", "pibs" by the Yucatans, "hallaquitas" by Venezuelans, and "humitas" by those living south of the Equator. The origin of the tamales we know today, is traced back to 7,000 B.C. in the Aztec empire. Back then, there wasn't corn as we know it today. The precursor to modern maize, called teocintle, was the basis of the tamale. I found these Mayan tamales by chance while driving through South Gate, Ca. We picked up several and it was all good eating.
