She is dancing, smiling and flirting. Emma is 72. Her husband and the love of her life died several years ago, both her sons defend Ukraine now. Her granddaughter fights for her life against lupus. And, still, Emma dances. Her granddaughter registered her in the dating apps and Emma eagerly communicates there. She gets upset when scammers text her every now and then though. Emma is happy to wear dresses and high heels, she walks a lot and happy to do some chores around the household to earn some money. She is smiling, she is fine, she is optimistic and hopeful. The only thing is that her eye ticks and she constantly checks her phone for the messages from her sons. She is reluctant to put down her glasses that mask the anxiety in her eyes. These days she spends her time with the granddaughter, a young photographer, who is in the hospital for I do not know how many times this year. They hope to bring the girl to Germany for the treatment but it appears a tricky exercise. Today we are introducing our second guest artist, Natalie Strohmaier (@nataliestrohmaier), which Juliane Herrmann (@julesjena), the Female Photoclub Board/Leader in North Rhine-Westphalia will be in dialogue with during our panel. Strohmaier was also recently a part of our collaborative auction with Grisebach auction house (@grisebach_auctions). Natalie Strohmaier, a photographer based in Munich, initiated her photographic journey while studying architecture at KIT Karlsruhe and ETH Zurich. After a postgraduate stint in production design at the Munich Film Academy, she spent nearly two decades working in various roles before rediscovering her passion for photography. Her background in film sets instilled a love for staged images, prompting meticulous research and preparation to craft the perfect props and settings. Operating mainly in the controlled environment of a studio, Natalie’s work explores societal issues like sugar and plastic consumption, as well as the pervasive influence of unrealistic beauty ideals in the media. Employing symbolism and subtle humor, her photo series present the familiar in a fresh light, encouraging viewers to interpret and contemplate the multi-layered narratives within. This event is designed as a safe space for women in photography, where everyone is welcome. Back then, we began our journey with black-and-white films. This foundational experience taught me more than just the technical aspects of photography; it was a lesson in seeing the world through different lenses – quite literally. In those monochromatic images, every shade of gray told a story, teaching us the importance of light. Without light, the darkness would have no depth, no dimension. It's much like life's challenges. They might seem daunting, like an endless stretch of shadows, but it's the light, no matter how faint, that brings balance and beauty. Creating black-and-white images has always given me a sense of hope. It's a reminder that even in a world that often seems overwhelmingly complex and colorful, there's profound beauty and clarity in simplicity. The stark contrast in these images is a metaphor for life's adversities. We develop, grow, and find clarity, not despite these challenges, but because of them. As I look back on my journey, both in photography and in life, I see how every 'negative,' every challenge, has been a crucial part of developing who I am today. These experiences, much like the nuanced shades in black and white photography, have contributed to a richer, more textured understanding of the world around me.
