Tokyo Photographic Art Museum — ‘A Traveler from 1200 Months in the Past’. The exhibition I went to see at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum featured a large series of works from their collection connected to the theme of time travel. The photos offer a glimpse into Tokyo’s past, capturing the energy of the 20th century through documentary-style black and white images, advertisements and magazines. Frenetic imagery of city and industry next to subdued moments infused with a sense of peace and nostalgia —a juxtaposition which remains ever present in the Tokyo of today. The exhibition takes inspiration from Miyazawa Kenji’s 1924 poem ‘Spring and Asura’ and “the fourth dimensional continuum” in which all things overlap at a cosmic time-scale. The photographs examine interconnectedness between narratives across time and place, science fiction fantasy and the enduring power of imagination in the past and the present. Overall, the exhibition exemplifies photography as a timeless medium with the ability to evoke nostalgia or memory, transporting us to moments of the past as a mode of storytelling both fictional and direct.
