On the last day of my @intrepidtravel tour in Thailand, I had the opportunity to visit the @phuketelephantsanctuary. This is one of the most ethical and sustainable sanctuaries in Thailand that truly helps rescued elephants with the highest level of animal welfare. The sanctuary has created a natural environment, with minimal human contact🐘 Majority of these elephants rescued are female and it can cost upwards of $25,000 to rescue a single one from circus work and logging wood. It broke my heart to hear the stories of these elephants, the suffering they endured, and the physical + mental impact it’s had on their lives. It’s taken these elephants a long time to open up to the workers at @phuketelephantsanctuary and to meet other elephants. These highly sensitive and caring animals are now rescued by @phuketelephantsanctuary so they can live the rest of their lives in peace with good care. I absolutely loved visiting this sanctuary and it taught me a tremendous amount about elephants that I didn’t know. It was a very insightful half-day trip that was also emotional at times. The cost of a half-day visit is 3,000 THB ($81 USD) and includes roundtrip hotel pick-up, a wide variety of breakfast + lunch, a tour guide throughout the sanctuary, and a memorable opportunity to feed the elephants🍉🍐 There are many inauthentic sanctuaries around Thailand that are profit driven so it’s tough to find a reputable place. @intrepidtravel is my go-to where they only recommend sanctuaries that have been properly vetted out by their team of experts. On the 22/04 some of my Aunts Thailand Birthday group went to the #phuketelephantsanctuary we got so close to the elephants and at the end of the tour (very hot and sweaty tour and 2 ice towels later) were able to feed some of them, we learned about what the sanctuary does and why and that the torture and exploitation of the elephants was still in practice (a few days later we witnessed it 😢) but highly recommend the Phuket elephant sanctuary the staff were really informative and friendly and the elephants well cared for

Elephants are super intertwined with Thai history and culture, but, unfortunately, they also have a long history of being mistreated and overworked. We knew we wanted to see them, but we also knew how important it was to avoid tourism options that exploit these amazing creatures. We did a lot of research to find an ethical elephant sanctuary that rescues and takes good care of these fascinating animals, and we got a chance to spend a few hours among them this morning. Such an amazing experience, we loved every moment of it. Those 12 elephants are treated well and you get to see their natural behavior, the shelter for the elephants saved from logging and tourist industries across Thailand. We observed the animals strolling around the forest, bathing in little ponds that are fed by the waterfall waters from a nearby National Park. The money that you pay for the tickets is a donation to the sanctuary so by visiting the PES you are ensuring that more animals can be rescued and cared for ❤️🐘❤️ #phuketelephantsanctuary

During our stay in Phuket, we also got to visit the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary🐘🌴. It is home to mostly old or disabled elephants that were saved from cruel circumstances, like typical tourist attractions where they were abused to perform tricks or elephant riding. Here, they can spend the rest of their life in peace and are well taken care of.
