On April 1, 1932, Debbie Reynolds was born. Lucy and Debbie admired each other tremendously. Although Debbie never appeared on one of Lucy’s television series, Debbie was a guest on Lucy's radio show Let's Talk to Lucy and the two shared the stage together on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1971. Lucy and Debbie were involved in many of the same charity organizations; particularly The Thalians, which was headed by Debbie and their mutual friend Ruta Lee. Lucy participated in many Thalians events and was even their gala honoree one year. That was a rare year Debbie wasn't in attendance because she was starring on Broadway in Irene. For years, Lucy and Debbie lived three blocks away from each other in Beverly Hills. The two socialized and bonded over being working mothers in show business. Debbie was always inspired by Lucy's ability to be both beautiful and funny and wanted to model her career on hers. Debbie even starred in a very I Love Lucy-like sitcom created by Jess Oppenheimer. Here, the installation requires a collaborative effort from the audience, requiring them to use their phones as an initiator for the experience. We shift our focus to a sense of touch just before entering the central visual space. The audience was invited to touch and be touched by the artwork while passing through the narrow corridor made of a parametric wall. With the aim to instil fear of claustrophobia in a space that is bright and light-hearted, the space forces each person to feel and engage in the present. While the audience might want to take photos, it is physically impossible, and with soundscapes that add to the uncomfortable experience, one can’t help but feel claustrophobic. While visitors walk through the hazy space, they are invited to an aura of forbidden allure and unrivalled mystery. The essence combines scents of earthy and herbaceous notes, pushing the boundaries and adding an unconventional twist to the experience. For the second touchpoint, we progressed the focus to olfaction. Using mixed mediums of fog, sound, scent and light, we wanted to evoke memory through the use of light that represented curated scents when the audience walked through the space. In order to up the ante of the experiential progression, we removed the sense of sight which allowed participants to walk through a low visibility corridor in a tactile environment. Through the use of soundscapes, layers of guided narration and a tactile floor (using gravel), all visitors are advised at the start of the journey that visibility is only up to 20cm in length and are guided by the sound.
