Meet my little kiln soldiers (aka glaze test tiles). I'm thrilled with the results of my first homemade glazes... everything came out quite stable, even despite a slight over fire. Nothing is drippy or requires any further modification, so now I'm free to glaze in batches until I fill up the kiln for another fire! And having the results come out of the kiln within 24 hours after mixing up the glaze was like a dream! Oh boy, people are SO LOVELY! Market season was a blast, who knew. I took the weekend to reflect on the heartwarming comments, extended customer conversations, messages of support, surprise visits, the facts and figures... People always asked how the markets were going and I was unsure how to define success so I generally replied with ‘they’re fun’, avoiding the reality that I had no idea what I was doing or why I was there. But the rollercoaster of emotions that come with these early stages is an an integral part of entrepreneurship and that will continue on this journey. So with the ups and downs here are a few of my own self taught mantras over the past 6 months of self employment: 1. Don’t sell things you’re not proud of 2. Your productivity doesn’t equal your value 3. These strange looking logs of clay are mug handles in their larval stage. Every potter has a different way of making handles. I prefer to have every handle pre-shaped, weighed, and grooved for maximum uniformity. They’re between 38 to 41g and after pulling, I’m left with about 5g, which I roll and press into the thumb rest. No waste, maximum efficiency. I also never shape and dry my handles before attaching them. They go from this state to pulled to attached in about 45 seconds. I never have issues with them cracking or falling off. As long as the mug isn’t too dry, there’s no need to dry your handles (unless you have a complex shape to your handles like @dwhighamceramics ). Again, everyone has a different method and there’s no wrong way!
